The girl tucked an unruly strand of white hair behind her ear as she shoved her way through the crowd. She was running late, and the ferry certainly wouldn’t wait for her, even if Nikolai would. She didn’t want to be the cause of them having to wait on it to get across to the island and back again, though. She knew her elder brother wasn’t going to be late, he was never late. He was much more organized than she could ever hope to be, and even as an adult she looked up to him quite a bit. He had always been there for her, no matter what was going on in her life, and she would return the favor if he ever needed her to.
Finally she would shove her way past the crowd, her eyes falling on his figure easily now that she was separate from the crowd. The wind whipped her hair around. It occurred to her that her hair had been through a lot in her life. Constantly being chopped off and dyed. Well, right now it was probably healthier than it had been in a while. Buzzing it off had probably been good for it, even though that had been a long time ago.
She shoved the thoughts from her mind as she crossed the walk, throwing her arms around the taller man’s shoulders in greeting. “Nikol!” She said with a warm smile as she pulled back. The siren of the ferry sounded, indicating that she had just barely made it on time.

The change of season was still upon Georgia. Down south, the temperature did not drop as drastically into the winter as it did up north, and some days were cool while others were fairly warm. That day, the season had called for a mild chill that only caused a shiver when the wind rippled by. The cool air had picked up the nasty habit of sticking its icy fingers where they didn’t belong and causing a vast majority of humans to twitch and squirm uncomfortably there at the pier before blasting itself out over the water and vanishing beyond the horizon line. One man in particular, however, seemed unfazed by it as he stood on the ferry his cool gaze reflecting the mainland that was soon to be pulled away from. Dawned only with a simple suit jacket and standard dress ware, he stood out among the crowd as if his white hair didn’t to begin with.
Winter had always been Nikolai’s favorite. Despite having spent most of his years in the south, he loved the icy season for more than one reason. In his youth, he would spend countless hours out in the chill, and as a teenager, he had held a fascination with ice sculptures. As he grew into his adult years, some of those around him found it ironically fitting: the coldest and ruthless of prosecutors loved the coldness and ruthlessness of winter. None were brave enough to say it to his face, however, but it was not for violence that they abstained so much as for fear of judgment. The blue Maksim traits that bore into individuals like no other were not to be taken lightly, and those that were around him long enough to understand this fact learned also to hold their tongue on matters. This was reserved, of course, for the general populace.
To the one he was waiting for, there was nothing but kindness in those spheres. He would wait for her, even if it meant stepping off the ferry and waiting for another. There was time for her; Nik would make time. Yulia was one of the select few whom Nik held no judgment towards, no bluntness towards. She was family, and he adored his family. That was all there was to it. Briefly gazing as one of the ferry men as he passed by, Nikolai frowned before lowering his gaze to stare at his wrist watch, the simple hand ticking by. Pushing himself off the railing, Nik stood straighter. He’d need to get off if she didn’t get on soon. Just as he looked up, however, Nikolai heard a familiar voice and found a body crashing into his. Instinctively, arms wrapped around Yulia into a simple return hug. “Good timing, Yulie,” Nik replied allowing a subtle smile to come to his features. “Ready for some fun?”
Suddenly the shift of the boat forwards was felt underfoot, and Nik found himself shifting a little to keep steady in turn. Allowing his gaze to shift sideways, Nik watched the boat pull away as it made its trek to Allensworth Island.

The girl’s feelings toward her family more or less mirrored those of her eldest brother. While it was true that she didn’t judge the rest of the world quite as harshly as he tended to, her love toward her siblings was easily the biggest part of her life. She knew that she would kill for them without a second thought if the situation called for it, and as someone who had taken another human’s life, she knew exactly what that entailed. It didn’t matter, though. Her siblings were worth that and more to her. There was a certain other male who seemed to fall into that category as well, though she wasn’t nearly as affectionate with him as she was with her siblings. She tended to be softer around her family than everyone else, not quite feeling the need to assert herself as much. Whether she realized it, admitted it, or whatever; Nik was basically the undisputed alpha of the family pack, for lack of a better way to put it.
She pressed her face into his chest a bit as she felt those arms wrap around her, breathing in his scent briefing before she pulled back. It was nice, Nik always smelled like Nik. And since he was one of the only people in the world who had seen her cry and had been able to provide comfort for her, the familiarity was more than welcome. “Yeah, definitely~” She agreed, her fingers closing briefly around his wrist as the ferry gave that little shift. Thankfully the woman was more than capable of holding herself up, the grabbing motion had come more from instinct that anything.
“How’s work been treating ya?” She questioned, leaning back against the railing of the ferry with a bright grin. She couldn’t imagine doing what Nik did. She would die being stuck behind a desk for any amount of time. Yulie needed to be able to move. She couldn’t stand having to be still, and was actually mildly claustrophobic – not that anyone needed to know that.

Nikolai’s smile warmed a bit more with Yulia persisting there. Her grip to keep him stable was not negatively received but instead taken in thanks as he carefully righted himself fully once more. He knew her instincts and actions well and knew they meant no harm. In the past her assertiveness was her strength, and even as she had aged into a mellower individual around their family especially, it was still there and respected as a part of her.
A soft sigh escaped into the air at the question before a small shake of head was given. Leaning on the railing as well, Nik glanced out momentarily before returning his gaze to Yulia. “It has been rather … busy,” he finally settled on the word. Hectic could also have been used but that implied more disorder than their actually was. The eldest brother had to admit he had been stressed in the last few weeks to say the least. Work had been a mess especially due to him attempting to get his Christmas break all settled away in the last few weeks alone. Normally it was not so difficult, but the number of court cases he’d been asked to deal with had increased exponentially on top of the extra paperwork. However, there was no way he would be working Christmas, absolutely no way. He had a Christmas party to cater at and family to spend time with.
“However, it should be slowing down soon,” he added more as an afterthought than anything. “And then we’ll have Christmas.” The smile that blossomed across Nikolai’s features was all too evident. Winter was his favorite season; Christmas was his favorite holiday. Even with the questionable reality of the birth of Jesus in light of the ‘gods’ appearance, the Christmas season was still his favorite. He loved spending time with family and taking care of them in the way he felt they deserved. It pulled at such a deep instinct that he couldn’t not love it.

As her brother settled in against the railing beside her, she leaned over against him slightly. The white-haired male was quite a bit taller than her, so she found it quite comfortable to rest the side of her face against his shoulder as she shoved her hands into her jacket pockets. She had often wondered why she was so much shorter than both of her elder siblings, but she supposed it was probably something she got from her mother. Not that her height mattered. Whether a person was taller than her, shorter than her, or around her height didn’t matter – she could kick their ass all the same.
She frowned slightly as he explained that work had been “hectic”. She could tell from his tone that was a bit of an understatement. While Yulia wasn’t Nik by any means, she knew her siblings well enough, especially her elder brother. She loved all of her siblings, but she was closest to Nikol. She felt like that was true for all of them, though. And if she thought it would actually help, the woman would gladly have went into his office and reduced everyone to tears, but she knew it wouldn’t.
She tipped her head back to look at him as he went on to speak, watching as his face lit up when he mentioned that Christmas was soon. The smile on his features was enough to elicit an even warmer one on her own. She liked seeing Nikol happy. “I’m glad~ I’d really hate to have to fight everyone in your office.” She grinned a bit and shrugged, indicating that it would be no big deal even if she had to. “You’re gonna make a ham, right?” She questioned after a moment. The ham was the best part of Christmas dinner! And Yulie was honestly more excited about the food than she was about the possible presents.

As Yulia pressed to him, Nikolai didn’t think twice in raising an arm to wrap around her shoulders gently in return. Though he was grossly ticklish, the eldest brother had at least a minor faith in his siblings that they wouldn’t abuse this without warrant. It was partially why he let them in closer physically to him than anyone else. The other reason was that he simply didn’t like the rest of humanity the way he did them. To Nikolai, blood was thicker than any other liquid, ever.
Nikolai resisted the urge to frown when Yulia had. His job required a lot of him; both of them knew that. People had suggested he step down from his position time and time again, but whether it was his pride or something else, Nik refused to. He pushed forwards, worked harder, and did what he could to force balance in a rather chaotic system. That was who he was. The consolidation of Christmas and its break was enough to bring the smile back to Nik’s face, however. It was the holiday he loved the most even above his Valentine’s birthday. It was a time for songs, lights, decorations, gifts, and above all else family.
As Yulia smiled back, Nikolai only brightened that much more. It was hard not to. Her comment on fighting the office staff, however, caused blue eyes to blink and his smile to falter just a little. “The office staff would not be pleased,” he mused softly giving a simple shake of head. He was glad she went on to food at least. It was an easier subject than imagining the people of the office thrown out this way and that. “Yes, a ham and turkey,” he replied with a wry smile. That was another thing he liked about Christmas: he got a chance to truly cook all he wanted to. “Any special requests?” he mused thereafter. Surely he would fill them without a second thought.

The girl pressed easily against her elder brother as he wrapped his arms around her. She was well aware of how ticklish he was, and while she surely did tickle him sometimes, now was not the time for such a thing. What if he fell over the railing? Nikol got violent when people tickled him, and the last thing he needed was hypothermia or something. Therefore, she was easy and gentle with her movements so she hopefully wouldn’t tickle him in the slightest. A soft smile remained on her generally intense features. There was nothing like spending time with Nikolai to calm the girl down a bit.
As he commented that his staff wouldn’t be pleased, though, her smile turned into more of a smirk. Well, that was the point. She didn’t care if they weren’t pleased. All she cared about was her older brother getting some time off – everyone knew that he needed it. She hated seeing him overworked, but she didn’t badger him about it. She knew he could handle it, and she knew he would quit if he wanted to. It wasn’t her place to tell him what to do, it was her place to be there for him when he needed her.
Her mouth watered a bit when she thought about the ham and turkey though. Meat. It would be delicious cooked by Nikol. “Ahh, I can’t wait!” She told him excitedly, though her face blanked a bit when she thought about what else she might want. “Maybe some knish? I don’t get that very much.” She requested after a moment. -- Nikolai Maksim

Yuilia’s exclamation reflected her excitement, and Nikolai reflected it for his own reasons. He couldn’t wait to have the entire family sit down to dinner again as they did every year. It was such a special time to a man who practically worshiped his family, and he couldn’t wait. The request that came thereafter earned a small thoughtful look as Nikolai recanted if he knew a recipe for knish. He was sure he did; he’d just have to go back through the cards in his recipe box to make sure. If not, the internet had made it possible to gather decent recipes now days. After a moment, the eldest brother smiled and gave a small nod. “That sounds good; I shall make some then,” he stated warmly thereafter gazing at Yulia. There was much to make, but he still had time for now, at least. He’d already shopped for quite a few choice items for dinner, and the things he didn’t have could be retrieved easily enough.
“Are you bringing any guests this Christmas?” Nikolai asked as the thought came to him. While traditionally, it was a family affair, Nik was too manic with Christmas joy to turn others away. The winter season brought out a happiness in him like no other, and tolerance and love was extended to many that would otherwise receive his judgment. Very few could get on his nerves when the weather was his to enjoy.

The girl smiled easily up at her brother when he agreed. She knew the dinner would be delicious no matter what. The food was always amazing whenever Nikolai cooked it, he had a talent for it that she unfortunately did not possess. She could cook okay, sure, but it was nothing like him. Her cooking abilities were mediocre at best, but at the very least she wouldn’t burn the kitchen down or anything. She had enough skills to keep herself alive and fed, that was about the measure of it, really.
She pursed her lips slightly as a certain blue-haired individual came to mind upon hearing that question. It wasn’t often that there was anyone outside of the family at Christmas, but whether she would admit it or not, she already saw the man she lived as family, really. A different kind of family than her blood family, surely, but still something all the same. “Ahh… hmm… I might invite Chase depending on what he’s doing?” Her tone was slightly questioning, almost as if she was making sure it was okay. No matter how close she was to Chase, Nikolai’s wants and opinions would go before him. If she felt like her elder brother would be happier with it just being her there, then that’s what would happen. Her family simply came first, that’s how it had always been, and how it always would be.

The small motion of Yulia’s lip left Nikolai silent as he waited for her reply. One of his virtues, at least towards his family, happened to be exceedingly impressive patience, and thus he waited for her reply rather than suggest anything. As she questioned out Chase’s name, Nikolai blinked thoughtfully. While his relationship with Yulia’s friend of sorts waxed and waned depending on multiple variables and situations, it was the Christmas season. How could it go too wrong? The answer was it couldn’t. Nothing could ruin Nikolai’s mood in such a season or so he was sure. A small nod was given after a moment. “That would be good,” he commented briefly.
Perhaps more words would have been spoken had not the sound of the ferry horn alerted him to the fact they were already getting close to Allensaworth. Turning to watch as the island drew nearer, Nikolai took a moment for himself before turning back again. “Let’s head to the front,” he suggested briefly before starting to the end of the boat carefully. Though the waves weren’t too shaky and the boat wasn’t bad, he was still a lawyer— not a sailor. Some things Nik would never quite get used to, to say the very least.
Making it to the front just as the ferry began to dock, Nikolai only had to wait a few moments befre the bridge was pulled down and people started exiting. Stepping off the boat and steading considerably thereafter, Nik glanced sideways expecting Yulia. “Where to first?” he asked simply.

She watched her elder brother’s face closely after she posed the suggestion. She watched for any signs that he might be opposed to it, and she found none. Without too very much pause at all, he stated that inviting Chase would be good. She nodded and grinned at him. It would be good. She liked spending a lot of time with Chase around Christmas, because it was doubly special for him. He had a birthday on Christmas Eve, after all. It was sort of like how Nikol had a birthday on Valentine’s Day, so she always spent that day with him.
Before anything else could be said, the horn that indicated the island was drawing near would sound, and Nik would voice his suggestion. She nodded and followed along in his wake with ease. Nikolai was a tall man, and people tended to naturally get out of his way, so she had learned a very long time ago to just stay close to him in crowds. It came so naturally that she barely put any thought into it. When the boat docked and the bridge was lowered, she stepped out beside him, turning to look up at him as his question was posed. “Let’s go take a look at the shops~” She suggested. She didn’t come out to the island much, so she wasn’t very familiar with the shops like she was back in Georgetown.

At the suggestion to look at the shops, Nikolai gave a nod. “That sounds good,” he mused softly after. Christmas was coming up, and though he had since picked up the choicest gifts for each of his family members, there were still small things that could be used as stocking stuffers and the like. There was also the notion of finding something for those in the office to enjoy. He hadn’t put as much thought into it as he would have admitted to, really, but Nik always did manage to come up with some of the best gifts for others even if they weren’t the most important things in his life- or so he thought anyways.
Once more, Nikolai glanced forwards, trying to place where they were in respect to most of the shops. Blue eyes scanning the length of the docking area, Nikolai caught sight of a general sign and made a gesture towards it. “Let’s see,” he mumbled more to himself than to Yulia as he closed the distance between himself and the map. They were at the simple star point labeled ‘you are here’, so it was easy enough to determine which way to go. Following the path with his index finger, he ended up making a directional point to their right. Glancing down that way, Nik half smiled. “There should be most of the shops,” he commented simply. Reaching for Yulia’s hand, he took it simply before starting down the street.
There were quite a number of people out and about that day including quite a few street vendors hwo may have only been there seasonally. Allowing his gaze to flicker from one sight to the next, he glanced in and out of windows as they passed. Nothing had quite caught his attention yet.

The thought of buying Christmas presents didn’t readily occur to Yulia until after Nik had started walking toward the map. She still needed presents for basically everyone. While the white-haired woman did put a lot thought into her presents, she wasn’t quite as good at picking them as Nik was. Of course, he had more money to spend on them, but it wasn’t really a matter of money. What mattered was the fact that you were thinking of someone, but ever still she simply didn’t seem to have the same knack for it as her older brother did. Short hair was tucked behind her ears as she followed him, standing next to him as he considered the map. Had she been on her own, Yulia could have read the map with ease, but since she was with Nik she only gave it a short cursory glance. Her brother was around six years older than her, so there was a huge period of both of their lives when he’d had to read maps and the like for them. It was habit.
She gave a short nod as he decided which direction to go, her fingers curling around his as she fell into step beside him. Bright blue eyes flashed this way and that as she considered the street vendors and things located in shop windows. It wouldn’t be until they came upon a bakery that her interest would really be peaked. Always one to be motivated by food, Yulia stopped short to peer in the window. The cupcakes, cakes, cookies, muffins and other treats looked simply delicious, and her stomach growled despite the fact that it hadn’t been that long since she’d eaten. “Let’s go in there.” She murmured, tugging on her brother’s hand to pull him toward the shop. Her fingers were curled more tightly around his than they normally would have been, if only because of the large number of people milling about the streets.
