History Anastasia Yulia Maksim was born on May 25th to some of the best parents a child could hope for. By the time she was born, the family had already settled in Georgia. As a baby she was doted on, just like all of her other siblings would be and always had been. She was born into a loving environment, and she never knew anything other than love or acceptance. She was very young when she started demanding to be called “Boris” on some days, and insisting that she was both a boy and a girl. This thing simply seemed to be ingrained into her personality or something. No doubt her parents and elder siblings assumed it to be a phase, and they catered to her, but it would turn out to not be a phase at all.
School was as hard for Yulia as it was for Nikolai, really. The girl spoke both English and Russian fluently, though sometimes she would speak in a confusing mixed garble of both that only her family could understand. Either way, it wasn’t that that got the scorn of her classmates. No, it was the fact that she claimed to be a boy on some days. She went through the first several years of school as a loner, turning to her family for her social needs. She was always a tough girl, though, and didn’t seem to be too upset by her classmates picking on her.
She was ten before she made a real friend. The girl was new, socially awkward, and shy. The other children immediately began to pick on her as well, and while Yulia had taken it when it was directed at her, she found herself enraged by the fact that such a sweet girl was being picked on. Therefore, one day she just seemed to… snap. Some little boy was pulling the girl’s hair, and Yulia tackled him and beat him about as hard as a ten year old could manage to beat another ten year old. She obviously got in a fuck-ton of trouble, not only with the school but also with her parents. But she made a friend for life, so she found it to be worth it.
A few more nasty scraps, and Yulia ensured that she and her friend would never be picked on again. The glasses were her friend’s idea. When she was younger, especially, it was hard to tell which gender she identified with on a certain day. Her friend suggested that she wear glasses when she was identifying with the male gender. The glasses would obviously get broken several times since Yulia was a rough child, but they did make things easier on her family and friends.
Things remained this way until it was time for the girl to enter high school. Entering high school was stressful enough on its own, but her friend came to her one day with tears in her eyes – she was moving away. The only friend outside of her family that she had ever made was leaving just like that. Yulia cried. The girl rarely ever cried, but she sobbed that day. First on her friend, and then on Nikolai. Her friend was moving so far away, it was unlikely that they would ever see each other again. Of course, there were calls and IMs to keep up with each other, but that just wasn’t the same.
Right before she entered high school, the girl would chop her already short hair off into a boy’s style and dye it bright blue. She didn’t go out of her way to try and make friends in high school, but one seemed to fall into her lap anyway. Chase Beckett. The boy seemed to be nearly as headstrong as she was, nothing like the timid girl she had befriended as a child. She liked it though. Chase challenged her, and surely the two got into and up to all kinds of things they definitely should not have. He quickly became her best friend, and while emotional sentiments weren’t really a huge part of their relationship, Yulia would have easily done anything for him.
Her high school years seemed to pass quickly with Chase by her side, and before she knew it it was time to start deciding what she wanted to do with her life. Chase had always seemed to want to go into the army, and eventually Yulia decided to accompany him in this. She didn’t have anything else she wanted to do, and besides, she couldn’t let him learn things she wasn’t learning, and she certainly couldn’t live with the fact that he’d done something really hard that she hadn’t. And therefore, the girl enlisted in the army. While the rest of the females who had enlisted kept their hair long, Yulia had all of hers shaved off with the men.
There was no place for binders and demanding to be called anything other than her legal name and birth gender in the army, however. She didn’t make a huge fuss over it. While she certainly did still identify with both genders, she took it as part of the challenge and sucked it up. When she wasn’t training, however, she would still wear her glasses on some days. Things just felt way too wrong without them.
Boot camp was harder than she ever could have imagined, though. She had thought she was in good shape, she had thought it would be easy for her. That confidence was thrown back in her face. If it wasn’t for the fact that she wouldn’t have been able to live with Chase making it through something she hadn’t, the girl surely would have given up. Her body was pushed to the limit every day, and the first little bit was pure hell. However, eventually her body would get used to these things, and rise to the challenge. The pride she felt at accomplishing a task that had previously been too much for her was like a drug, really. Though she did find herself missing Chase quite a bit as she got used to the physical demands and was able to focus on that.
Of course, things didn’t get easier after boot camp. Either way, giving up wasn’t an option, no matter what. The girl excelled in hand-to-hand combat, pummeling the hell out just about anyone she was put up against. There was nothing like standing over an opponent at the end of the day. Obviously she didn’t win every fight, but she was at the top of her class in this regard.
Getting deployed, though, now that was a whole different kind of challenge entirely. She tries not to think about what happened, about the things she did. She tells herself that she had to do those things to stay alive, and while that certainly isn’t false, it doesn’t make most of them any easier to stomach. Either way, when she returned to the states, she was assigned a therapist. At first she was too proud to really talk to them, choosing instead to talk to her elder brother about the things that had happened. He was no therapist, though, and eventually he got her to open up to hers. While you can never be entirely cured of the anxiety and PTSD that dogged her, the therapist helped her immensely, and she still talks to him to this day.
She would go on to open up a sporting goods store after a while, not being able to stand not having something to do. It wouldn’t be long after it opened that Chase would come back around again. In a way, it felt like they had never parted. Despite ten years having passed since their first meeting, toward each other the two adults still acted like the headstrong and dorky teenagers they had once been.
Six months ago, when the event occurred, she was approached by a “god”. She’d never put much stock into gods or anything like that, but she figured it couldn’t hurt to make a wish anyway. At worst it would just turn out to be a prank or something. The girl wished, simply, for the safety of her family and loved ones. In response, she was a given a power. The power changed her life, giving her the ability to actually physically become a male.
Insignia Level 1 Gender Bender – Level One – Yulia’s power is honestly quite simple, truth be told. Since she had identified with both genders for as long as she could remember, the god decided to give her the ability to become a male when she was identifying with that gender. To be honest, she’s not sure how the power works. She had no actual control over it. Some days she wakes up as a woman, some days she wakes up a man. She loves it, though her bones and muscles always seem to be aching since she was given the power – probably from them being stretched and shrunk ever night. Later on this power will become more like a traditional shape-shifting ability as she levels it up.
Her insignia takes the form of a male and female symbol twined together like this, and it is on her left shoulder blade.
Olaf – Passive – Yulia’s passive takes the form of a polar bear cub. The thing is all white, clearly, and has blue eyes – it basically looks like a Maksim. He seems to be more intelligent than the average polar bear, and simply follows Yulia around. He’s lazy and he likes to make whining noises all the time, but she finds herself quite fond of him. He also seems to help with her nightmares quite a bit as well.
Extra - She doesn't tolerate Chase going on dates at all, and will often ruin them if given half the chance.
- She still works out because she can't be having Chase being stronger than her or any bullshit like that.
- While she doesn't really come off as a person who would, she's always perfectly willing to help anyone out that needs it.
- She can play the guitar really well, and she also knows how to play the piano and violin. She doesn't have a bad singing voice, either.
- She buys scarves for Olaf to wear all the time. He probably has at least twenty different scarves.
