His head was throbbing, but of course it was. He had abused his power too much in this sitting, but he’d known that he would when he first sat down to study. Finals were coming up, and he was beginning to become so stressed that he could barely eat. Bastion had never been one to handle stress well at all. In a last ditch effort to make himself feel a little better, he had sat down and read the entirety of his European history book. Which was no small feat considering the book had nigh on 1200 pages. He could feel his eyes watering slightly from the headache, but his stomach was a bit less twisted since he now knew that he would be able to ace the final. He wasn’t actually sure if using his power to study was cheating, but even if it was, he wouldn’t stop. What else would he use it for?
It was around lunchtime, or at least, he felt like it was. He had begun studying at around ten, and it had taken him at least two hours to finish that book. He could feel his stomach growling, and placed his hand lightly on it. He really didn’t know if eating would settle it, or if it was upset from the pain in his head. He sighed lightly, digging some over-the-counter pain medicine out of his backpack and downing two or three of them. He was no stranger to taking them now-a-days. They wouldn’t make the headache go away, but they would make it manageable.
After a moment of sitting in silence, he pushed himself from the table and gathered all of his things into his backpack. It was slung over his shoulder thereafter as he turned and began to make his way through the towering shelves of books. He hoped to read most of them before he graduated, maybe all of them, and with his power that was certainly possible. A combination of his headache, being distracted, and being hungry were what caused him to walk right into the other man. He hadn’t been expecting anyone else in the library on a Sunday. He blinked slightly, looking up at the bicolored hair of the individual he had smacked into. “S-Sorry…” He stuttered out, unable to remember the fall that had left him sitting on the floor.

A gurgling sound reminded Jesse for the third time that day that he needed to eat soon, yet as the dual haired young man focused on the passages in front of himself, he could scarcely hear it. With finals week approaching, Jesse had unwillingly begun to curtail some of his work hours towards study hours, and he had decided to make the most of them to say the least of it all. Honestly, he probably would have kept working full time and would have studied when he got the chance, but after his brother had taken notice of the encroaching date, he’d suggested to slow down- which in the end Jesse agreed to. I’ll just work on that more later… he had assured himself. Yes, his… other project of sorts was quicker cash and paid better in that regard. Even if school had been paid off for this semester, he wanted to stock pile for next semester right then and there.
It was only when his phone vibrated that Jesse looked up from the next blinking briefly in confusion as to whom that could be. Surely his brother was at work, and surely the restaurant didn’t need him right now, right? Flipping open his phone, Jesse took in a sharp silent breath before closing it. Reaching up to stretch, he mentally switched gears. Alright, it seemed he’d have to make sure to make time to work on that project later then. Upon realizing how stiff he was, Jesse rose and stretched further before lowering his arms and exhaling gently. Maybe it was time for a change of scenery. He could go down to the coffee shop on campus or something and sit down there. Silently nodding, he put away his things and started through the library.
“Atch!”
The exclamation would escape from Jesse’s lips before he realized it as he found himself knocked back. Rather than fall over, however, he managed to take a few decisive steps backwards in order to remain standing. Staring down then at the raven haired young man he’d run in to, Jesse flushed now upon realizing it was rather clear whom had been hit harder by the collision, and for that reason, the apology that came thereafter earned a look of raw confusion. “I…” he started uncertain of what to say before slowly stepping forwards and extending a hand to the yellow eyed man. “It’s alright- are you alright?” he asked softly and rather uncertainly.

That look of confusion on Jesse’s face would be mirrored on his own features as his brain tried to piece together what had happened. Obviously he had ran into the other male – or at least he thought that’s how things went down. But then, why had he ended up on the ground? Was he really feeling that weakened at the moment? Perhaps it would be a good idea to get something to eat – and fast. He almost wanted to kick himself, and he felt his cheeks flush a bit as the other man asked him if he was okay. Bastion wasn’t exactly a clumsy person by nature, but then he had sort of set himself up for this if he was honest.
After a bit of a wait, he finally took the hand that was extended to him. By himself, Bastion barely weighed enough to be considered healthy, but perhaps the backpack would help to remedy that – or maybe the other male would realize it… ah, what the hell, it didn’t even matter. It wasn’t like he starved himself or anything. He was just a thin person by nature or something. Either way, with the help of the other man, he found himself once again in a standing position. His butt throbbed a bit from falling back on the floor, but it wasn’t anything that he couldn’t live with.
“Thank you,” he said after he dusted his butt off. “I’m fine, really. I’m just so distracted by finals, I guess I somehow missed you there.” His hands came up in the air as he gestured animatedly for whatever reason. Having a headache and being hungry seemed to be loosening him up a bit, which was only a good thing, really. “I didn’t hurt you at all, did I?” He went on to ask.

The pause left in the air as Jesse kept his hand extended sent an unnecessary chill through him. For a few seconds, he dwelled on dropping the hand completely and just waiting for the raven haired individual to stand on his own. However, when that hand was finally taken, Jesse quickly pulled up strongly enough. It helped the young man before him was rather light. “There,” he muttered more to himself than to the man before him once he had stood. Somehow it helped him more that the young man was off the floor now. The thanks earned a soft nod as the hand was relinquished of its duties and set itself on the back of Jesse’s neck. “Welcome,” he murmured softly thereafter.
The assurance that Bastion was fine earned a soft nod from Jesse. “I-i- yeah…” he reciprocated back at the explanation. As the question was asked, dual colored hair shook as their owner gave a ‘no’ response. “S-sorry again.” Jesse attempted to say more, but somehow embarrassment had flooded his thoughts and cleared what might have been otherwise coherent words. Finally glancing down at Bastion’s shoes, Jesse took a breath in. “My name’s Jesse; I’m a sophomore,” he commented slowly thereafter. He could easily have been talking to the room as a whole with the way in which he chose to word it, but with Bastion being the only one there it was clear who he was talking to.

He noticed, finally, after he was pulled to his feet that the other male seemed to be embarrassed or something. There was really no need for that. Bastion had walked right into him, after all. He wasn’t feeling too embarrassed himself, which was a bit of a first. Normally he would have been a stuttering mess, but perhaps it was just the fact that the other man didn’t seem angry or upset, and he also wasn’t coming on too strong or anything like that. Bastion nodded a bit, his raven-colored hair bouncing around with the gesture. He crossed his arms tightly over his chest, frowning as another apology was given. “Its fine, I promise.” He assured the other, his voice warm. “I really think it was my fault.” He went on to say, his brows furrowing a bit.
His toes twitched slightly inside of his shoe as that gaze dropped. When was the last time he had even washed his shoes? Did they look dirty? He looked down himself, feeling relieved when he found that they didn’t look any dirtier or cleaner than anyone else’s shoes. He bit down on his lip, letting out a breath he hadn’t known he’d been holding as the other man finally spoke again. “My name’s Bastion, this is my first semester.” So the shorter man was older than him, then. “What’re you majoring in?” He questioned, his voice genuinely curious. He still didn’t know what to major in.

The crossing of arms and frown on Bastion’s features stirred a sense of discomfort in Jesse. People often used such a gesture when they were angry but repressing it, or so he had observed. However, the warmth of the words that came thereafter were a bit soothing, like a hand patting his head perhaps, and he relaxed a bit more. As the blame was taken again, a soft exhale was released before a small nod was given. Shifting his belongings on his shoulder, Jesse found his gaze had dropped and his eyes lost focus. It came when he was thinking, normally, but in this case, it was a habit of nervousness.
As the name was exchanged, he glanced up again meeting those golden eyes. Bastion. It was an old name, or an odd name. Jesse was used to hearing its elongated form: Sebastian. Maybe it was a nickname? Rather than ask, however, Jesse took it as it was. He didn’t get time to think on it longer, however, when the question was asked. What was he majoring in? “Chemical engineering,” he replied with a small nod. Barclay had quite a number of majors, but his brother had convinced him it was best to major in something that would bring in a decent amount of money instead of what he actually wanted to major in. He was good at chemistry, at least. “Yours?”

As those green eyes moved up to meet his gaze, his eyes would flicker off to the side a bit. While he could hold Atticus and Kimmie’s gaze if they looked at him, he mostly looked away from other people. He wasn’t sure why, he just wasn’t good at looking people in the eye. Sometimes people took offense to it, and he hoped that Jesse wouldn’t. He looked back again as the other man spoke, answering his question. Even as he was looking at Jesse’s face, though, his gaze was more focused on his forehead than his eyes. “Chemical Engineering.” He repeated, shifting his weight slightly. “That sounds hard, you must be really smart.” He went on to say. Of course, Bastion was smart as well, but he didn’t really notice that.
He chewed on his lower lip a bit. “I... can’t really decide on what to major in. Nothing really seems that appealing to me, and I don’t wanna limit myself to just one subject.” He blushed a bit when he realized how much he’d just said. He really didn’t want to bore Jesse. Jesse seemed like he would be a good study partner. Alex was a good enough study partner, but Jesse was older and probably better at it than both of them. “So right now I’m just General Studies.” He finished up.

As those gold spheres escaped his green ones, Jesse was suddenly self-conscious, and he glanced away quickly thereafter. Was something wrong? Had it been something he said? Jesse attempted and failed to recant exactly what he had even said. When the question was asked, he forced himself to speak and to return his gaze to Bastion despite something now crawling in his stomach therein. As his major was repeated by the raven haired man before him, Jesse gave a nod in affirmation. The words that came thereafter, however, had color climbing to his cheeks. Was he really smart? M-maybe. He was a hard worker and someone who didn’t give up; that was proven by history. However, was he smart? He… he guessed so with what probably sounded like a difficult major. A small cheesy smile gripped the young man’s features after a moment. “I, ah I guess,” he smiled softly.
Returning the gesture, Jesse attempted to pay more attention to what Bastion spoke. So he was an undeclared major, one who didn’t want to specialize. A small nod of understanding was given. If he hadn’t been sure of what he wanted from the beginning of his college career, surely he wouldn’t have known what he wanted to do. There seemed like too many options, especially at a place like Barclay. “Ah,” Jesse replied promptly upon realizing he had fallen silent for a good few seconds. “What classes have you taken already?” he asked quietly if only to follow up.
Suddenly Jesse’s stomach decided to pipe up and let out rumble that shot color to his features. O-oh that was a bit embarrassing wasn’t it? His lips parted and then pressured together again as he found himself unsure if he should apologize for it or not. Maybe it was better to ignore it for now.

As that blush crept up the other man’s features he felt his cheeks warm slightly as well. For a moment he felt slightly panicked. He hadn’t meant to make Jesse embarrassed or anything, he had just complimented him and he really didn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. However, as that grin appeared on the other student’s features, he calmed slightly. Okay. Even if he had embarrassed him slightly it wasn’t a big deal because he wasn’t mad or anything. He returned the smile softly, though his own was quite a bit shyer. Sometimes he wondered why he couldn’t be more like Atticus. He had never seen his brother act like a blushing child before.
However, as that question was posed he seemed to relax a bit. That was something he could easily answer. “I’m taking General Psychology, Egyptian Mythology, Statistics, Biology, and British History.” He recanted his classes with ease. “I wanted to take World Literature too, but my advisor said I shouldn’t take so many classes my first semester.” He shrugged a bit, though he was kind of thankful for the advice. He probably could have handled another class, but it definitely would have made things even harder.
His golden gaze lowered to Jesse’s stomach as it decided to make itself heard. So he was hungry too, then? “Ahhh…” He felt his cheeks warm up again. “You wanna get something to eat?” He mumbled, rubbing the back of his head as he stared at the ground next to Jesse’s feet.

As Bastion listed off the classes he’d already taken, Jesse found himself mentally repeating them as each was spoken. Psychology, Egyptian Mythology, Statistics, Biology, and British History— altogether it sounded like a hefty load. Truthfully, he was surprised Egyptian Mythology was even a class; he’d never heard of it. However, he supposed apart from the basics most of his classes were geared towards the sciences which meant other majors and subjects that didn’t apply didn’t get mentioned as often. He’d taken Biology and some generalized History, however. And I’ll have to take Chemical Stats soon.. Jesse mentally reminded himself, so in that case, all things considered, they had done some similar classes.
Jesse blinked surprised as Bastion noted that he would have added yet another class on top of all that he was taking. He was struggling to get by with a bare minimum of hours… but then again, did Bastion work? One… two jobs? Probably not, Jesse reassured himself feeling a strange anxiety entering his veins at these thoughts. What was actually the problem, he had no way of telling. These thoughts were lulled a bit of their own accord as his body registered the need for food. Glancing down, Jesse managed a smile as Bastion spoke. “That sounds nice…. Maybe at the café or something?” he offered just as quietly back. Did he have money to be spending like that? Yes, he did; ok that was good.

The truth of the matter was that Bastion didn’t work, and if he did he surely wouldn’t have been able to take as many classes as he was. He wanted to focus on his studies, and for the time being his parents were still willing to pay his phone bill and give him money for food. For the time being. He’d been told he would have to get a job this coming summer, and he was rather dreading it, but he couldn’t rightfully argue with them about it, either. His parents were kind and loving, but they were also strict and stood by their word. If they said they would stop paying his phone bill and giving him spending money come June, then they would. Thankfully as long as he had a job they would still pay the phone bill but… he was getting off topic, and Jesse’s quiet tones almost failed to pull him out of his own head. Thankfully, though, golden eyes would blink and refocus as the other man agreed to have lunch with him.
Oh.
He was the one who made the offer, sure, but somehow he hadn’t expected it to be taken up. Having lunch with strangers wasn’t usually something he did, but he felt comfortable enough around Jesse, really. There was just something… relaxing about him. He adjusted the straps of his backpack yet again as he gave a nod. “The café sounds good, yeah.” He agreed, turning on his heel thereafter to lead the way out of the library. “So, do you live on campus?” He questioned as they walked, more for small talk than anything, really.

For as calm as Bastion felt towards Jesse, Jesse felt towards Bast. There was just something overall calming about the young man. There was no immediate pressure aside from his own intestines, and it was nice. Once he’d made sure he had everything and triple checked, Jesse started on with Bastion out of the library and off towards the café. Thankfully with it being on campus, it wasn’t too far, and Jesse could keep up with Bast’s pace easily. They would be there pretty quickly anyways.
The initiation of small talk had Jesse’s gaze transition back to his dark haired companion. However, at the question, a headshake was given. “I live off campus with my brother,” he explained with a small smile. “But it’s not too far, and I can pretty much walk here in the mornings and walk back in the evenings.” There was the briefest pause thereafter. “Do you live on campus then?” he asked. While he had wondered quite a bit about what dorm life was like, Jesse had not considered living on campus. It was just an extra expense when he could live at home and get there just fine, right? There was no need. “Do you have a roommate and ….things?” he asked not quite sure what ‘things’ actually were, really.

Lips parted wordlessly, and a small nod was given as Jesse explained that he lived with his brother. “Living with your brother must be nice.” He commented absently, quietly. The thought of brothers automatically caused his mind to turn to his own brother, who did in fact have his own place. But Bastion preferred living in the dorms to anywhere. He was close to school, he didn’t have to drive, and it was just comforting to him for some reason. His fingers moved to tug on his shirt slightly, a nervous motion. It was hard for the raven-haired male to just let his hands hang at his sides. Eventually they came to cross in front of his chest, though his fingers continued to drum on his arms.
“Yeah, I live on campus.” He answered, turning to regard Jesse for the briefest of moments before he looked forward again. “And yeah, I have a roommate. His name is Alex. He’s kinda shorter…” He held his hand up to where Alex’s height would have been on him. Of course, Bastion was a tall person. Most people usually weren’t taller than him. “He has long blonde hair.” He went on to explain. He figured the hair was probably Alex’s most defining feature. It was to him, anyway. He found Jesse’s hair to be his most defining feature as well. “The dorms are pretty good sized, my side is always messy though.” He admitted, laughing nervously as he rubbed the back of his head.
