Bastion is a somewhat complicated character, and harbors some contradictions. Firstly, he is an introvert. He doesn’t tend to enjoy being in large crowds, and sometimes finds that he needs time away from people to recharge. Conversely, though, he seeks out the attention and approval of others compulsively. He needs people to like him, no matter what he might project about not giving a damn about what people think about him. He craves attention, and while he won’t allow himself to be taken advantage of by a stranger – he will accept both good and bad attention from the people he has grown to love. In his eyes, anything is better than nothing.
Despite the fact that he may not seem it to the outside observer, Bastion is a soft and somewhat weak person – both physically and emotionally. Surely if he worked out, or even ate enough to gain a little weight, he wouldn’t be so weak physically, but he finds working out to be too much of a strain when he has other things to do that he deems more important. His emotional weakness is another matter that isn’t so easily fixed. He allows things to get to him, to worry him, and he overthinks every little thing, especially in regards to social situations. What did that abrupt goodbye mean? Surely it didn’t mean the person is busy, surely it means they’re angry with me or I did something wrong. He allows little things to eat at him, and is constantly at least a little stressed out by them, though more often than not he’s basically just a walking, talking ball of stress and nerves.
He tends to come off as stiff and impolite when first approached by people, but that’s simply because he doesn’t know how to be himself. He tries to be something inhuman and perfect, and as a result sometimes ends up shoving people away. The truth of the matter is, however, despite his rather stiff and pissy nature, he’s a kind and loving person at heart. He just wants people to like him, and he’s afraid they won’t like his real personality. It takes time or a special person to get him to loosen up and be himself. His real personality is one full of jibes, jokes, and sarcasm. He loves laughing, and finds dry/sarcastic senses of humor to be the funniest – which surely wasn’t influenced by his elder brother in the slightest.
Bastion loves to learn – about literally anything. He’s just as happy learning how to take apart an engine and put it together as he to learn about the proper way to handle a spear or even to look at a timeline and memorize it. He has large amounts of useless knowledge, and is more than happy to drabble on about them if you get him talking. Though if he’s not really comfortable with you he’ll pause periodically and apologize for being boring. No amount of reassurance that he isn’t boring you will make him stop, he just assumes most people don’t care about these things.
History
Gilbert and Cecilia Lewis were a successful couple and loving parents. Having already given birth to one son, Atticus, three years later Cecilia would find herself pregnant once again. Both of the children had been planned, and therefore there was plenty of room for them in the house. Bastion couldn’t have asked for a better family to be born into, well, he couldn’t have asked for better parents, anyway. It would seem that Atticus wasn’t very fond of his younger brother from the start, and he was always giving Bastion a rather hard time.
The two brothers were like the difference between night and day. Atticus, brash and bold, Bastion, quiet and meek. Usually the younger brother would hide behind one of their parents, though every now and then he would stand up for himself. It was quite a relief for him when Atticus began kindergarten and he got a peaceful house to himself most of the time. Even without his elder brother around, Bastion was an extremely quiet child. He developed a love of reading extremely early on, and excelled in school when he eventually started.
Bastion always tended to have a very good time at school. He was able to learn quickly and easily memorize the things the teacher told him. Of course, this would give him a bit of a reputation as a know-it-all or a teacher’s pet, which inevitably led to him being bullied a bit. He didn’t really have any friends, and he didn’t know what to do about it, so he kept it to himself. Despite the fact that his elder brother had made quite a name for himself, it never occurred to Bastion to ask him for help.
Apparently, though, word of him being bullied would make it around to his brother in one way or another. Atticus made sure that the boy who was picking on him never even looked in his direction again, and no one else was brave enough to attempt to bully him after that. The two brothers would manage to work through their differences thereafter, and maintain a rather close bond. Bastion would even come out of his shell a bit and make a few friends.
When he was around ten, his mother would give birth to another child; a daughter. He didn’t really think it odd for the girl to be so much younger than him, nor did he pick up on the strain in his parents’ relationship. He took a very big interest in his new little sister, and spent a lot of time taking care of her. Surprisingly, his parents seemed relieved by this and allowed him to do whatever he wanted with her.
Of course, as he started high school, he started wanting to go out more and spent less time around his sister. He didn’t really notice how much this distressed her, as he was distracted with having friends for the first time in his life. It would be within this group of friends that he would meet a certain girl. She was pretty enough, but Bastion had already noticed he didn’t really have a lot of interest in females. His interest was actually reserved for his male peers, but he tended to try and squash these feelings out.
When he was around seventeen, this girl began to express interest in “taking their relationship further”. He’d never felt anything beyond friendship for her, but he decided to agree anyway. The kissing always felt a little awkward and forced, but she didn’t comment on it, so maybe it was just him. They would date for a little over a year, but it would be after their senior prom that things began to take a downward spiral. Through certain situations, it became very apparent that he wasn’t attracted to her in the way that he should be. Therefore, they ended up breaking up.
He was, quite understandably, distracted from petty teenage problems when the event occurred. He was approached by one of the so-called ‘gods’ and offered a wish. He managed to stutter out something about graduating from college with a 4.0 GPA. Thereafter, the insignia would appear on his thumb and a strange looking raven would begin following him around.
Insignia Level 1
“The Bookworm” – Level 1 – Bastion is able to read through books at an extremely quick rate, finishing up to a 1000 page book in the span of just an hour or two. Not only that, but he is able to remember everything that he reads in the book perfectly. However, this puts a very hefty mental strain on him, and he can’t do it very often. He usually has headaches for at least two days after using his power to this degree. The amount of mental strain/headaches/severity of the headaches correlates directly with the amount that he read and how quickly he decided to read it. Despite the mental strain, he uses his power as often as he can to help him in school and just to learn in general. Generally he can successfully use his power about once a week without causing so much stress that he is bedridden.
His insignia takes the form of a worm that begins on his wrist and loops up around his thumb.
“The Bird & The Worm” – Passive – Bastion’s passive ability take the form of a ghostly looking white raven that tends to follow him around everywhere. The raven can speak in broken English, but rarely makes any sense, and usually just ends up giving him a headache.
Extra
- He smokes cigarettes, which is a habit that he most likely picked up from his older brother. He's been doing this for a few months now.
- He loves literally anything that is lemon or citrus flavored.
- He is terrified of being alone, and usually goes out of his way to be around the people he has befriended.
- He tends to look at everything in a very negative light, and has trained himself to always expect the worst of any situation.
- He sleeps in the fetal position.
- He often looks at things in a coldly logical sense. He's one of those people who would sacrifice one person for the good of humanity in the blink of an eye.
- He has a terrible inferiority complex that leads him to be extremely jealous of his friends, lovers, and siblings. He has an irrational fear of being replaced.
- He can belly-dance really well, but nobody knows.
