- Optional in depth personality if one wishes. History Shizuko Asuna was the second born of the Nakahara family, which wasted no time in growing their family after landing a good paying jobs in America. The Nakahara's were a happy couple that like most Japanese, are very traditional and family oriented. After their good fortune with their first born son, Makoto, they looked forward to expanding their family and soon tried for a second child.
The Nakahara's seemed to have jumped the gun at naming their new baby girl Shizuko. It was a name that meant "Quiet child". This might have suited Makoto, but Shizu was anything but quiet. She was the polar opposite to their firstborn, a colicky and loud child. She cried and fussed a lot and was a bundle of energy from the very start. A stark contrast to what the Nakahara's were used to with Makoto.
Shizu was headstrong and stubborn. This was unfortunate for Makoto who was charged with her safety and care. Its not that she didn't love her brother, Shizu was just a girl who wanted things her way. In addition, Makoto was so passive that she stood out that much more. She was always being reprimanded for her rambunctious personality by her parents. This was especially true when her new little brother Katsu was born two years after her. Everyone was always being so critical of her. Shizuko did not understand the needs of her sickly younger brother at first. There was one instance that Shizuko does not remember what she did wrong, but she was reprimanded rather harshly by her parents. It was the first time she'd been spanked and so she cried for hours, being so confused. Makoto was there for her. He helped her understand that their baby brother needed special care and was fragile. Makoto was patient with Shizuko and would speak to her softly so that she had no reason to get angry and push back. She was able to finally understand more so than their parents could ever hope to with their scolding.
This bonding went a long way towards who she is today. Shizu embraced her roll as the middle child and younger sister to her older brother. She understood that like she'd always been told she was to rely on her older brother, who was there to protect her and look after her, Shizu was supposed to do the same for her younger brother. Shizuko always looked to Makoto after that. As she got older she fell into the roll of middle sister and did everything she could to help Mako when he needed her support. Together they were finally able to properly look after the sickly Katsu, so much so that he was even allowed outside with them for short periods.
That being said, siblings were still siblings. Makoto and Shizuko got into many arguments and fights with each other like siblings tend to do. That was just the order of things in the universe. Even if they were angry at each other, they were there for each other as a united front when needed. This was especially true toward their baby brother.
This bond was a double edged sword however. While she looked to him for protection, Shizu was still Shizu. She was not one to let anyone get the best of her. She was also very outspoken and head-strong. She was not afraid to speak her mind, and she was not afraid to defend her words with action. In many instances she got into fights, and then cried to her brother whether she won or lost, for not being there protect her as a big brother should. In fact, there were a few times where she was the one who helped and protected Makoto. The end result was still the same. She always cried... well, more of "complaining" to him at the end.
Other than that, Shizuko had a normal childhood. She was popular and had friends of some girls, but mostly boys, since she was outgoing and never afraid to try something for the first time. Not being shy had its good points. She was always selected to head activities or groups. She didn't mind that at all. She liked to be the one to call the shots. The only person she didn't mind differing to was her Onii-Chan. At the same time it did also have its drawbacks. Boys didn't see her as a girl. She was just another one of the guys, pretty much, even though she was otherwise a normal girl who liked dresses and her hair done up and playing with dolls and everything. Girls also shied away from the more tomboy-ish traits in her. They were friendly at school, but she didn't get invited to sleepovers or other after school girl get-togethers. Shizu didn't seem to mind.
She had an extensive collection of plush animals and cabbage patch dolls that she played with. It seemed that was all she wanted for her birthday. She had one favorite over all. A doll she named Anko, whom she was seldom without. She even rode to school with her, hidden in her book bag.
Shuzuko was just five years old when the family took a trip to their native Japan to visit relatives. It was fun times playing with Makoto and her cousins. With so many relatives to look after their baby brother, the two went out and explored the towns and places. It was easy for them to go about themselves, since the Nakahara's made sure that the children were fluent in Japanese as well as English. They went to many places, including a climb of the famous Mt. Fuji. Shizuko made a lots of friends with girls her age. She also had many cousins. She was somewhat of a celebrity, being from america. It made her exotic and all the girls wanted to know all about it. There were so many places to visit, and she was always having a sleepover with either a cousin or newly-made friends. There was so much she didn't realize she was missing. What she thought were friendships back home were really not. They were more of acquaintances.
It was over much too quickly, and Shizu was not happy to be leaving. She wanted to stay in Japan. She had everything there that she did not have back home. She went on and on about why couldn't they just move to Japan. Promises of consequent visits in the future was the only way they got her to eventually calm and board the plane.
Not too long after they returned home, something happened to her baby brother at school one day. He was injured, but nothing life threatening. The details were not explained to Shizuko nor Makoto, but mother and father were clearly angry and upset. There was nothing either of them could have done, but Makoto took it especially hard. Yes, he was the oldest and charged with their baby brother's safety and well being, but it was not his fault. That didn't keep him from the guilt.
Shizuko couldn't understand why he was blaming himself. Or perhaps it was because she was pre-occupied with her own problems to offer much help. She was depressed. No one would notice because of her demeanor, but she was enlightened to something that she was unaware of before her trip to Japan. She was lonely. It was not something she could ignore any longer since her trip. Not that Makoto did not pay attention to her, but lonely for relationships with girls her own age. There was more to friendship than just getting along in class. While in Japan she got to hang out with her cousins and their friends. She saw that there was a whole other side to a friendship that she didn't realize before. Ignorance was bliss back then. Now it was unbearable.
So when the event happened, Shizuko's wish was simple. She wanted friends. Specifically ones she could spend time with and play with. But the Gods had a warped sense of humor about things. Or perhaps not. Maybe it was simply that they could not grant her wish in the way she wanted.
Shizuko's life changed forever, when the next day she'd not woken first at the sound of their parents getting breakfast ready. Shizu was a very light sleeper and was always up first. She would brush her teeth and go wake Makoto and Katsu. Today she opened her eyes to find Makoto in her room calling for her. A glace at the clock told her it was late. They were going to be late for school. She was getting worked up about her failure of her dutty as the younger sister to wake him, when he told her that their parents were sleeping in and to come down for breakfast. Shizuko found this strange, but it was not completely out of the ordinary. Their parents had slept in before. So, happy it was not her fauld after all, she did as she was told without complaint. She ate her cold cereal with milk and let Makoto pick her clothes. Then she helped with Katsu and they all left School.
When they returned, nothing had changed. There was no smell of dinner cooking and no mama to greet them and ask how their day was. There was also no note telling them that their parents had gone out and would be back. Shizu was sure it was their car out front, so she looked to Makoto. He seemed to be irritated at what was going on and went to go check on their parents. He returned shortly, and Shizu knew by the look of him that something was terribly wrong.
There was a phone call to the police, and then Makoto had something to say. The rest was a blur since Shizuko had gone into shock and blocked out the memories of what happened that night and the next few days. She only remembers suddenly being in an orphanage after going to school that last day from home. Her parents had vanished without a trace.
Insignia Level 1
Insignia Level 1 Autonodoll – Level One – The ability to give inanimate objects autonomous ability. Shizuko's familiar is her insignia. She must be with Shizu for her to command objects. Currently limited to two to three objects, which must have a humanoid shape, such as plush animals and dolls. I'd say she can give a toy or two at a time the semblance of sentience or toddler like intelligence. Otherwise they have kinda simple animal mindset, but they follow her reasonable orders without question. Unreasonable requests are questioned or ignored at times, but when not given orders they just kinda do whatever. Their speech is limited to key words that are cryptic. They cannot carry a conversation.
Animation draws on her personal energy reserves to give "life" to objects. She can animate a single object for several hours. Two for an hour. And three for half an hour, after which she will be exhausted and need to rest and eat to replenish her energy stores. Her appetite has increased significantly because of this. She is always snacking on something due to using her gift often to play.
Familiar - The familiar has possessed her favorite cabbage patch kid, Anko. She is highly intelligent and communicates with speech. Anko can communicate with Shizu's autonodolls. They will do what Anko says, only if it does not conflict with Shizuko's orders.
Extra
Shizuko is fluent in English and Japanese. She has a large appetite for snacks and sweets that she needs the sugar and energy from to continue to use her gift.
