History
Once upon a time, she was part of a happy and healthy family- to her memory anyways. Her mother was sweet and kind hearted, but she couldn't remember much of her father. Her mother swears up and down that he was a good man, but what good man never spent time with his children? She doesn't remember anything from her three years of age- only that she had another sister. After that- she can't remember ever seeing her father more than twice in her life time. At first, this was fine. While she didn't mind not having a father, she didn't mind taking care of her sister either. In fact, since she was young, she couldn't remember anything but wanting to be a caretaker.
Her mother had a lot of problems from allergies to chronic pain. When she was young, she didn't understand it- but worked her best to take on the role of mother. From the small age of five, she can't remember ever 'needing' to do anything different. That was her role and there was never anything bad about it. Her mother would cry a lot, lock herself in her room, and that scared Carol- but she tried to take care of her little sister and her mother the best she could. As a small child she would be easily cowered by her mother's rage- only to be swooped into a hug and cried on.
She could tell there was something wrong with her mother...but she never could find out what. Ruth, her sister, was in her care since she was a child. Carol doted on Ruth and did her best to do whatever she could to make the child happy. She was more of a mother to her sister than their actual mother was. She was seven when she saw her father for the first time in the courtroom. Both of them argued about something called 'child support', and her mother won- but not without tears and stress that sent her into a downward spiral.
School was short for her and relatively normal. She would eat very little, talk very little, and hide her face. She was bullied- and it frustrated her because she honestly didn't do anything wrong. It was mostly boys trying to pull on her hair and tease other girls too. Why were boys so bad!? Her dislike of men only grew each and every year as the bullying got worse- her father would call drunkenly to the house and verbally abuse her mother and both of them. He was a terrible person and she loathed him greatly.
She would find out when she was thirteen, that her mother was abused by the man briefly and her mother's fragile mental state was declining so fast with her help- that they could never keep up the bills. She tried her best to work from the early age but she could only make enough to cover groceries for a day or two. She did her best to care for Ruth, even if she felt that her mother was failing as a mother as well.
They lost their home and they lived in a homeless shelter for seven months. It was a terrifying time and one that shaped her to this day. When their grandmother died- one relative she did not know- they moved to Georgia to take the home that was willed to them. It was strange- but not too different from her Carolina home. School was still just as awkward and bills were hard to pay. Even if they had a home, they did not have enough money with her mother's constant trips to the ER and her sister's budding rebelliousness.
When their mother was diagnosed with cancer- all things stopped. Ruth stopped acting out as much, school became less important, and Carol finally was the mother of the home. She rarely slept, was constantly stressed, and grew more bitter and hateful to the world around her. She didn't want to deal with her mother crying and wishing for herself to die. She didn't enjoy being told that she was the best 'mistake' her mother could have made. She didn't enjoy having to hear her sister speak about problems she genuinely couldn't care about.
Carol was angry that everything ended up on her shoulders. All because some guy got her pregnant and broke whatever mental sanity was left in her mother's brain. She had to give up her life to take care of these incompetent people. Why was she the only one responsible? Why wasn't she allowed to go get things for herself? Of course she also grew depressed that she was thinking that while her mother constantly had anxiety and panic attacks as she tried to get through chemo. All things were bad for the two girls.
She recently got a job that paid quite a bit but it's only a few days a week. It's for a housekeeping job where the boss tried to buy her off literally days after she got there. Frustrated, she snapped at him and saw through that ploy. She wasn't a cheap woman who could be bargained off with money. She was hired for a job, she was going to do it, and he could sit in his lap of luxury. She grew more brash to her boss who only seemed to enjoy much to her frustration.
She got a second job as well, working as a waitress for a cafe. She also learned her boss was working there- and she concluded he was a stalker and she needed to carry around pepper spray. He's nice...but strange and men are just jerks in general after all.
When the event happened- she honestly didn't care. She wished for her mother's chemo to go away- but the wish was refused. Instead, a envelope and papers were shoved in her hands for college. She swore she heard the words of, "It's your turn to live your life." but she couldn't know who said it because after that she was thrown into bed and was staring wide eyed at her familiar.
Insignia Level 1
"Rod of Asclepius" - Level 1 - A long forest green staff comes to her aid. Small serpents twist and twine up the edges and sometimes she feels like they move. There's nothing special about the staff as she can use it to fight and do other general things. It however does have small healing properties she can only give mostly to herself or heal extremely small wounds such as scratches or bruises on someone else. She's only able to use this once a day and it usually troubles her even then with constant nausea and what seem to be anxiety attacks.
Passive - "Eliza" - What she thought was an old crotchety constipated looking cat who was now stuck with her actually was an old crotchety constipated looking cat that could talk. Eliza is more of the bullied voice of reason that constantly advocates for Carol, even if she personally doesn't want it. The yellow tabby cat is brash, rude, and in general pretty nasty to be around. However she has a ridiculous sense of humor and is constantly cracking very rude and bad jokes.
Extra
- Dreamer - She used to believe her mother would get better, she would find a prince, and she could live happily ever after. The problem is now she hates the idea of her actually being free. The idea that it could possibly happen leaves a foul taste in her mouth because it obviously hasn't. Men try to use her, her mother is constantly breaking at the drop of a pin, and her sister is in all kinds of messes she doesn't know. What prince would want this trash?
- Self-Loathing - Possibly one of the easiest to know traits after you get to know her is the extremely hate for herself that she has. She doesn't believe she deserves a life because she was never encouraged to get one. Taking care of people is the only thing she has. It's the only thing she's ever done. She's not pretty, she's not smart, she's not above average. She's really nothing compared to everyone else.
- Good Cook - Carol is a wonderful cook. She knows all kinds of ways to make different meals and have different ways of saving/cooking things. She likes to make big meals- but she rarely has the means to. Her favorite food is fried fish, but she hasn't had it in a few years. She's great at making sweets, cakes, and in general whatever someone wants. It might take her a few tries on something new but she's able to soak up knowledge fast.
- Judicial Studies - Strangely enough, her degree is mapped out to be in judicial studies. She knows nothing about it- and she's taking a lot of remedial courses, but...it's a really interesting job. She however doesn't think she's cut out for it and often feels like she's drowning in everything.
- She loves the color green - Strangely enough, she's a sucker for green. Green means flowers, food, money, all kinds of things in general. Green doesn't look good on her at all in her opinion, but she does love the color and often surrounds herself with different types of things that are green.
