Marco Antoni Verdi didn't know for ten years that his real parents were not Francesca and Lorenzo Verdi. They were the only parents he knew though, and he loved them very much. He grew up in the town of Teggiano which was in the hills south of Naples Italy. Marco had a rather uneventful childhood at first. His parents were old enough to be his grandparents and his brother and sister were much older than him. Into their late teens when he was born. They'd moved out by the time he was old enough to be able to talk, and never seemed to really pay him much attention, even when they were around. He didn't really see anything wrong with the situation in his youth. His parents were loving and vigilant.
He had everything he needed whenever he needed it. Though Marco didn't know what his father did for a living, it was never important to ask. His father was not home much, being gone for days at a time, but his mother Francesca was always with him. Marco was always a good student. His grades being top of his elementary and middle school classes. He was popular and well liked by his classmates, so one would never guess that he had few actual friends. His interests were different from the other children. He gravitated towards the sciences. Always the curious one. Always wanting to find out how things worked and how things were the way they were and how everything came to be. He drove his teachers mad with the persistent questions, but what could they do? He wasn't actually doing anything wrong, except to disrupt their lesson plans with wanting to know the most minute detail about whatever was being discussed.
Young Marco would rather be at the library than wasting time with video game systems or movies or any horseplay that other boys his age wanted to do. He was left to his own devices most of the time. Though taught early about his famiglia and the respect of those in positions of power within the famiglia. He wasn't stupid. He knew it was the mafia, but his parents did not seem to be involved as soldiers or enforcers or anything illegal, so it didn't matter. He did know the important figureheads though. And he knew the respect they demanded and what he was allowed to do and say in their presence. He knew of the Don and that he was the brother of his father, so The Don was always in the picture somehow. Either when the family went to visit or to one of his events, or when the Don himself came to the Marco's parents house. He was an uncle, but no one called the Don "Uncle, or Brother, or anything. He was simply the Don.
His life as he knew it would change at one of the Don's family reunions. Marco would gravitate to two girls his age that were there. It was unusual for him. He usually had his nose in a book or otherwise studying something that peaked his interest. Yet when he saw the girls, he put his book down and walked over to introduce himself. He was a boy of confidence. There was nothing he couldn't do when he put his mind to it. While he was considered anti-social by some, Marco had no problem simply walking up to the girls and butting in on their conversation. His hand was out and his name was spoken to them before they could even think of protesting his intrusion.
It turns out he had a hell of a lot in common with his new friends Carmina and Oriana. They were a lot like Marco. They had some of the same interests, and he did not find them childish or boring. He found the two girls rather refreshing. There were also a few more visual similarities. They shared hair and eye color. They could have pretended to be siblings and fooled a lot of people, if everyone at the event didn't already know better. The more they talked, the more elaborate the conspiracy theories became. It was so much fun that they decided to share the joke with their parents. Only the adults did not find it very funny. In fact, Francesca fainted. Marco looked at his two friends and in the look they shared something of an understanding. They pushed forward with questions, no longer treating it as a joke, but fact. What they learned that day would forever change them. The three were in fact siblings. Triplets. Marco was shocked into silence. It wasn't till minutes later when his sister Oriana walked off in the direction of the Don that he finally found his voice. One did not just walk up to the Don without being announced. And not with disrespect. He called to her, and that brought attention to her and she was stopped.
Marco's arm would be taken roughly then by his father. He yelped in pain, but was dragged away and back home with little protest from him. He was still in shock and resisting didn't come to mind until it was too late. His sisters were being escorted away from him. He reached out and called their names on last time. He received a slap from his revived mother for his troubles. He'd never been struck like that before and by the time the shock wore off he was already in the car and on the move. In other words, too late.
Francesca apologized for striking him, but Lorenzo was not so forgiving. He made it clear that Marco had humiliated his family with his actions. That Lorenzo should have come to him first in following with the family's hierarchy. He was warned against ever doing so again. Lorenzo was not an bad guy though. Once Lorenzo got that out of the way, he announced that secrets would no longer be kept and that Marco could ask what he wanted and as long as it was understood that none of what he was told was to leave the confines of the house or be spoken with anyone. Also that Lorenzo could not disclose information not privileged to him. Marco agreed and he learned of his mother and father. Not in great detail, but at least he knew their first names and that they died and that the Don entrusted Marco to them and his sister's to others. Not exactly the "Whole" truth, but at the time it was enough. At 10 years old he would have been incapable of understanding about their murders and about the relation to the Don.
Marco became rather obsessed with his sisters for obvious reasons. He had sisters that he didn't know anything about for ten whole years, and he just wanted to be able to see them and talk with them. There was ten years of missing information that he just had to know. Ten years worth of his own life that he wanted to share, yet no one would listen to him when it came to that one request. He was told it was impossible. That their meeting at the party was a mistake that never should have happened. That it was for his own good, and for his sisters own good to keep them apart. But why? He might have accepted it somehow if someone had given him a valid reason.
Accidentally eavesdropping on a heated conversation Lorenzo was having on the phone one day let it be known to him that Oriana had somehow managed to track down Carmina. The two almost got away with running off. Marco himself was plotting to do something similar, but Marco was a patient person. He was waiting for the right time. Ideally, when he learned how to drive, for how else would he get his sisters out of the country. He also learned that his sisters would never be able to find him. That it was up to him to find them instead. His father was a made man and a high ranking person in the maffia. He had protection from things like being able to be tracked. Being in the house, however, made Marco able to learn things via spying.
He was not surprised when he was approached one day by his father and forbidden from the sciences. He was to put his near photographic memory to good use for the famiglia by learning the major languages. French, English, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. He protested anyway, but he knew it was a mute point. The Don himself had ordered it. Marco knew though, that it was the unrest in his Oriana's household that led to such drastic decisions. There were problems at Carmina's too. They were both trying desperately to unite the siblings, and Marco felt ashamed that he was not taking a more active roll. He vowed that day that he would save his sisters from their oppression. That he would help reunite their family. Together they would either run away or at least disappear until their demands of being reunited permanently were met.
He managed to locate both his sisters and decided on rescuing Carmina first. It was logical that the more aggressive of the two would be watched most closely so should come last. He wanted to be away with Carmina before anyone noticed and hen he'd have help with Oriana. Though he'd studied how to operate an automobile and even practised on simulators on his game system, he looked too young and did not have a drivers license in his early teen years. He would instead choose a motorcycle. With all the riding gear and full face helmet, no one could guess he was under-age.
Marco had done his homework before he ventured out. All the Mafia families had the same security system. Having access to his own at his residence, he learned about its flaws and how to circumvent it. He readied his supplies and flight reservations. His father kept a large amount of currency in the house. He helped himself to a healthy portion and set out to liberate his siblings.
At first everything went as planned. Marc was able to slip out unnoticed and successfully located Carmina's home. Getting in was a breeze. Waking Carmina without her freaking out was somewhat challenging. She fought him at first when awoken by a shadowed figure putting his hand over her mouth thinking she was being kidnapped. He somehow managed to keep his hand clamped over her mouth though she bit hard enough to draw blood and kicked like a mule. Once she realized it was Marco, she couldn't apologize enough. He had her dress in riding gear he brought that he could only guess at her size. The unforeseen injury would be the first part of their undoing. Marco's injured fingers would make him loose his grip on his way down from her window. The resulting noise would get the attention of a staff member who would raise the alarm.
A chase followed. Everyone thinking Carmina was being kidnapped by a rival family. Marco's inexperience riding would seal their fate as he rocketed into a substantial lead. Their escape was almost certain, but fate had other plans for them. Ahead was a car that had stalled on the road. It impossible to have seen it in time since its battery was dead and it had no lights. By the time he could see the car, it was too late. He had a split second to make a decision. Brake hard or swerve.
If he could have just seen ahead a split second... At the speed he was going he lost control the moment he tried the swerve. Carmila's ill-fitting helmet sealed her fate. He would drag his battered body to her side and she would die in Marco's arms. The family would catch up shortly after and Marco would dawn his helmet and be beaten brutally while offering no resistance and not identifying himself. At that moment he wanted to die. How could hepossibly live after what he'd done?. Unfortunately he would become unconscious and a kick to the head would crush his helmets visor to reveal his identity saving his life.
Marco Antoni woke up at a specially hospital in America after being stabilized and flown there. All his injuries and broken bones would heal except for one. He'd lost use of his left eye. The shards of the helmet visor and shattered eye socket had damaged irreparably the muscles controlling the muscles that controlled the eye's motion. Though he could see, he would keep the eye covered with an eye patch unless needed. He found that the fixed eye gave him deadly accuracy when sighting firearms, specially with scopes on high powered riffles. This would come useful in his new role. He was informed that he owed the Don a life's debt for taking the life of a family member. He would live the life of a mafia soldier. Trained to kill. He would do so until his debt was communed by the Don.
Marco laughed at the absurdity, but reality would slap him across the face both physically by the Don himself and by what he said next. The truth had been withheld from the family on his orders. He would not be humiliated by the actions of one bastard child. Neither his foster parents nor Oriana knew what he'd done. They were told a rival family had attempted a kidnapping and his sister had died at their hands in the botched attempt. If Marco did not do as he was told, the truth would be communicated to his sister.
For years Marco trained along with the other wise-guys. He learned to fight, learned to kill, but most importantly, he learned to live. To survive. Desensitizing himself so that he could live with his conscience. He could have just killed himself at any time, but he owed his sister. Carmina would want him to live on. And he wanted to protect his remaining sibling from the ugly truth. Marco resolved that no one had the right to tell her, her foster parents, nor his the truth but himself. All while continuing his original directive of learning the major languages of the world. He worked tirelessly to keep his mind from straying to the demons of his past. He did so well that the Don did finally did excommunicate Marco from being a low level operative. It was causing problems with the captains that Marco bore the surname of the Don. This made Marco untouchable, even as a soldier. He was trained, but did not do any risky work. Marco was protected though it did not seem that way to him. A Verdi simply could not be allowed to be arrested in connection to crime.
At age 18 Marco was given the stature that was to be given to him if the accident had not happened. He became a made man. The Don's personal translator and an ambassador of sorts for the family to their overseas operations in Europe and Asia. He was allowed everywhere but the old country. (Italy) But best of all, he was back in a position where he was privileged to high level information. Marco wasted no time in gathering any and all information about his precious twin. He learned of her schooling and progress while he'd been in his incommunicado limbo. He was ready to face her, but the Don would not hear of it. He forbid Marco from going to Italy or anywhere near Oriana.
It wasn't till the death of his twin's foster parents to a home invasion by a rival family that his restrictions were lifted. Marco followed Oriana to the United States. Though forbidden from making contacts, he was ordered to guard her and her friend from afar. He was only to make contact if his sister was in imminent danger. Throughout her stay at the university, he shadowed his sister from afar. With the help of the local mafia, he was able to keep her safe. Soldiers infiltrated the university and places she frequented and gave him live updates on her safety. Marco was becoming frustrated and restless however. Being close, though far was enough at first, but he needed to speak to his sister. He needed to let her know he was alive and most of all, he needed to tell her the truth. It was the only way for him to find closure.
The event with the Gods was his saving grace. An answer to his prayers. With the area sealed off, he was no longer bound by the Don's restrictions. However, the God cursed him with a "wish". Marco made the mistake of laughing and turning his back on the God telling him he did not believe in such nonsense since he was 10yo. The God went ahead and pried into his mind and read his one regret in life and made the wish up for him. It would take him months to come to terms with and master his "Gift".
Insignia Level 1 Sight beyond Sight - Level 1- The insignia was placed upon his maimed eye. His eye's motor functions were restored though he can hold it in place due to how long he went without its use. The pupil is an hourglass shape and the color of his eye would be a bright amber in contrast to his other eye.
Exposing the eye gives Marco the vision of precognition. He can see up to 3 seconds into the future of events within his field of vision. With this he can avoid blows, dodge projectiles, or otherwise look to be super agile as he responds to threats. He keeps the eye covered due to its side effect. His eye shows him the effects of time on everything. Youth withers and ages before the eye, beauty fades, buildings crumble to dust. It's enough to drive a person completely mad if left to watch the world around him decay and die for too long. Covering the eye stops the visions.
Marco is also severely unbalanced after using his gift. He tends to go from super agile while using it to total klutz afterwards. The effects fade with time. Usually gone within the hour.
Passive - A small white ferret that lives under his hat. Bianca likes to stay where its warm and dark and Marco's hat fits the bill. She likes to play tricks such as talking while hidden under his hat to get Marco into trouble, or removing his eye patch without warning. Once removed, even for a moment, covering the eye up makes Marco loose his balance and loose his depth perception for a few minutes. As annoying as she is Bianca has proven her worth to him by by literally being the eyes in the back of his head when it counts.
While she can eat normal food, she seems to enjoy biting Marco and drinks his blood like a vampire.
Extra Marco Antoni is always well dressed in custom tailored suits since becoming a "Made Man" within the mafia. He is an important figurehead that is always at the service to the Don of the family, who she still does not know is his paternal grandfather. He considers himself a ladies man, though still a virgin himself. Always the gentleman, he is his own worst enemy in love by never taking that crucial next step as to not make the lady nervous.
