History
Desmond Finley Walsh was born to Carol and Doran Walsh on a bitterly cold January night in the Irish city of Dublin. His parents had met at a bar one night, and really hit it off. Truth be told, his parents weren’t ready for a child. Despite the fact that Carol was twenty-eight and Doran thirty, neither of the adults was ready to settle down. Unfortunately for Desmond, his grandparents had passed long ago, so there was no one in the immediate family to help them out.
Things went okay at first, though. Doran really buckled down on his job as a mechanic, and got promoted to a supervisor. Carol seemed to be content to stay at home with young Desmond and care for him. Every other weekend the parents would pay a babysitter and go out to a pub. They seemed to be doing a very good job of balancing a life of partying with a life of parenting. For the first two years of his life, Desmond knew nothing but love and harmony in his life. He was a happy and quiet baby, already exhibiting signs of high intelligence and surpassing his peers in development.
However, things would quickly fall apart for the seemingly happy family. His parents’ relationship had been getting rockier, and his mother had started an affair. She would wind up pregnant, but it was quite obvious that this new baby didn’t belong to his father since they didn’t even sleep in the same bed anymore. Desmond was confused. His life went from peace and harmony to screaming and a drunken father faster than he could really process it.
His parents didn’t break up, though, even if they should have. His mother supposedly cut contact with the man she’d been having an affair with, and his father claimed the baby. When it was born, Desmond was three. He didn’t like her. She cried all the time, and she stole what little attention his mother had been giving him. He would begin to do mean things to the girl, liking stealing her toys or smacking her bottle of her hands. He was crafty, however, and was rarely caught. Even as a child he was an excellent liar.
These skills would be reinforced and tested by his mother when he was around seven. He came home from school one day to find his sister’s real dad on the couch with his mother. He was ready to tell their father and expose their mother, but she sat him down and talked him out of it. “Do you want Mommy and Daddy to break up? Do you want to tear the family apart? What would happen to Susie if we broke up?” Honestly, he didn’t care what would happen to Susie… but what about himself? He continued to pretend like he was going to tell for a few days, though, and his mother ended up buying him a computer to keep him quiet.
This is where his love of computers began. Soon enough he was figuring out the inner workings of the thing, and by the time he was ten he was demanding a new and better one. He got into video games, and stopped making friends at school. All of his friends were online, and he had no need for physical friends. He became so engrossed with the thing that his father started threatening to take it away. However, a quick look at his mother and she would talk his father out of it. He constantly held the affair over her head, and used it to get whatever he wanted – including money. He typically put all of this money back, saving it, though he wasn’t quite sure what for.
By the time he was thirteen, he was hacking sites just for the fun of it. At first it was nothing major, but it gradually began to escalate. He was extremely good at it, and found himself hacking government sites and bank sites to get people’s information. In this way he was able to steal quite a bit of money. Unbeknownst to him, however, his family was falling apart around him. His sister hadn’t been quite as good at keeping the secret as him, and by the time he was fifteen his father had been let in on it.
The custody trial was pitifully short. His father wanted nothing to do with him since he had lied for so long, and had little claim to his sister. They were both given to their mother – who had no income. Desmond was able to get them a shitty apartment, though, claiming the only bedroom for himself. His mother eventually began to work, but he paid little attention to her or his sister. Most of his time was spent in his bedroom, hunched over his computer in the dark.
However, at sixteen he got sloppy and found himself in some very hot water. He was able to talk his way out of jail time, but he wasn’t able to continue hacking for fear of being caught again. Once he finished his community service and was let off patrol (two years later), he took all the money he had saved up and purchased a one-way ticket to the USA. He didn’t really feel bad for leaving his mother and sister. His mother was doing well enough to support them, after all.
He settled into his life in a town in Georgia. His choosing of this town was completely random, though he found that he liked it well enough. He got a job as a receptionist at a local business, and slowly worked his way back into hacking. He was wary, though, and didn’t readily do any of the more illegal things that he had done back in Ireland. He didn’t want to be caught again.
After the event happened, Desmond was approached by a being. The being promised to give him a way to hack into anything. He was excited by this prospect and very readily agreed to it, receiving an insignia on his hip. The insignia was very literal – a rat. His wish was simple as well. He wished for a laptop that didn’t run out of power or need to be charged. Unfortunately for him, the rat turned out to be an asshole and less than helpful.
Insignia Level 1
"The Rat" – Level 1 – Desmond has the ability to summon a rat to help him with his hacking. The rat can stay around for a maximum of fifteen minutes, however it can leave at any point before that if it so chooses. The rat has a personality that is ironically mirrored of Desmond's own, personifying his negative traits to a very extreme degree. The rat does not care if Desmond succeeds or fails, and is very ambiguous toward him. If it grows bored, it will leave without helping. He runs the risk of this every time he expends the energy to summon it. The rat will also sometimes lie to him, and he can never tell whether or not it is being truthful.
The rat’s purpose, that it very often fails to fulfill, is to help Desmond with hacking. If the rat so chooses, it can point him in the right direction on breaking into a site, building, etc. The rat often gains amusement from pointing Desmond in the wrong direction, however, so he is wary to accept its help. If it does decide to point him in the right direction, this will speed up whatever he is hacking a lot, and would be very useful in a situation where he was pressed for time.
“The Mouse” – Passive – This little guy is a robotic mouse. He really serves no purpose for Desmond other than being that – a mouse. He usually takes the form of a mouse (like the animal) and chills out in one of Desmond’s pockets, however he can also transform into a computer mouse and Desmond exclusively uses him for his mouse.
Extra
- He is extremely phobic of heights, to the point where if a camera in a TV show/movie is showing an angle at an extreme height, he has to look away.
- He tends to forget to eat and sleep a good amount of the time, leading him to nearly always look exhausted and underfed.
- He absolutely adores blueberry muffins, and typically anyone who decides to cook them for him as well.
- He gets extremely nervous around police or anyone associated with the Law, and tends to avoid them out-right.
- He always eats the icing off of cake and cupcakes first, and rarely eats the actual cake part.
- He really enjoys messing with people and upsetting them. If he knows something bothers you, he's likely to pick at you about it. It's really how he expresses affection more than anything.
- While he would never admit it outright, he's been very lonely since moving from Ireland. He would like to have at least a couple friends, really, even if he insists they're "useless".
- He is extremely stubborn and prideful. If he was a mythic hero, his fatal flaw would be hubris, and it has been in the past. He can never accept that he's lost, even when he obviously has.
- Desmond can never apologize. Even when he clearly sees that he is wrong, even when he feels so bad about doing something he could curl up and die, an apology will never fall from his lips.
