The winter season was upon Georgia. Trees had shed their last leaves, and the wind and rain left chilling reminders that it would not be spring for some time. Even if it didn’t freeze as it would in the northern states, those that were raised there still considered it cold enough. Dawned with heavy jackets, scarves, and hats, people made their way around in the chill rather quickly. There were very few who relished the weather long enough to be outside, yet among those few, Atticus Lewis stood. Clothed only in a simple black suit and tie, he walked virtually unfazed through Landry Park in the general direction that would lead him back to his apartment.
Work had been a drag what with the medical examiner being irritable at the lack of bodies and building cases and deciding rather than do the work that everyone had signed up for, they were going to be the maids for the entire damn day. Atticus had never cleaned so much in his life, and he hated it. When he had enough money, he swore he was getting a maid- or a wife who actually liked doing that kind of stuff. At the moment, however, he was rather broke and knew it. Despite having his college paid for and a standing job, Atticus found money was easy to spend but difficult to make. He still went to morning classes, after all, so his job could not be as full time as he wanted to begin with, and what he got pay wise was starting to feel subpar. Maybe I should have been a doctor he sneered at that thought knowing how hard it would be to deal with living breathing patients. He preferred the dead; they didn’t fight back for one.
“Do you really feel that way, Mr. Atty?” a voice asked causing Atticus to pause in mid step and glance back to a dark haired boy standing directly behind him. Orange eyes and raven hair distinguished the boy readily as his familiar- as if the ghostly appearance didn’t already. Despite the chill, the boy wore a short sleeved orange shirt and black pants as if perhaps it was Halloween though he seemed completely unfazed by his surroundings.
Atticus frowned. “What’s it to ya kid?” he asked. Atticus had long since given up wondering how the child could read his mind when such a strange creature of sorts refused to answer more often than not. Similar to Atticus himself in many regards, Allen did what he wanted, spoke when he wanted, helped when he wanted. There was no pushing him or pulling him in any direction that he didn’t want to go.
Allen gave a small shrug and a soft smile. “You seem to like the living a lot too, that’s all,” the boy replied bridging his fingers together in front of himself. “Why did you choose to be an examiner?” For all of a few seconds, Atticus was dumbfounded. It was so rare Allen chose to speak more than a few words at any given moment in time, and never before had the child actually asked such deep questions.
A snort escaped from Atticus before he turned around fully. “Either way,” he replied. “Al how the hell aren’t ya cold?” he asked with a head tilt. The child just smiled and seeped into nothingness once more leaving Atticus to stand there frowning softly to himself. A small shake of head was given before Atticus turned only for someone to come crashing into him. “Shit!” he barked gripping hold of whomever it was to keep them both from falling.

Compared to Japan, the winter months weren't near as cold in Georgia as those that were clothed in layers of coats and scarves would have led most to believe. Jae however was only dressed in a light jacket and work scrubs and that was more than enough to keep him warm. It was quite amusing seeing the locals look like the Eskimos he had read about before but never truly seen any before. Really, a little cold wasn't going to hurt anyone but then not everyone came from an already cold climate. To him, this was comfortable and just light jacket weather.
It had been a busy day at work and right now he really just wanted to get back to his apartment and get out of his uniform. If he had stayed any longer no doubt they would have him running all over the place looking for documents among other things. It seemed that even as a medical scribe he had become a glorified gopher boy instead of actually learning anything new that day...unless you counted how to drain puss from an infected wart. Jae still shuddered at the thought of it...it was a mercy none of the sickening liquid got into his hair but then again he had it up for a reason. He didn't want to be a simple gopher though, he wanted to help people but it seemed like he was getting nowhere fast. Not only that but he had been given homework to complete when this was supposed to be his break off school.
Sighing, Jae opened the document and thumbed through it yet again hoping to find the answers somehow that still remained elusive. Perhaps he could use his powers to somehow find the answer...but then again there were textbooks back at the apartment he could use and he didn't want to rely on his power too much. There was always a chance that the toy box would disappear and perhaps with it, their powers and familiars. If only that day would come sooner because Veritas was incredibly annoying to say the least of things. The snarky dragon thought he knew everything and didn't seem to grow tired of reminding him of it daily.
Jae was so distracted by his thoughts and the document in his hand that he didn't realize someone was walking along the same path as him until it was too late. The purplette yelped in surprise and suddenly found himself grabbed by the other man, and just barely managed to catch himself thanks to the other man's actions. Blue spheres stared at the other man before a small smirk and a slight laugh escaped him,"You know, you shouldn't fall for someone so easily~,"Jae quipped, all too aware of how close they were at the moment.

Steadied by his grip on the other man, Atticus sighed softly. He didn’t need to fall and bust something on a cold surface. Sure he was young enough to bounce back pretty fast, but if he landed on his arm, Atticus would be of no use to the medical examiner. Atty could only imagine the look on the damn man’s face if it had become a problem. Man that would be a stupid story to tell. Allowing his gaze to transverse the man he’d latched on to, Atticus smirked upon finding a similar expression on the man’s face. What was so funny?
Purple hair, light eyes, and dressed like any other, the young man before him was no one he knew readily, yet the words that came out in response earned an amused laugh in response. Well wasn’t someone bold? Atty didn’t mind it as much as some men might have. In fact, to him, it was almost funny. “I think you’re the one who fell on me,” the dark haired man sneered briefly his tone more than teasing. “Not quite the most graceful angel I’ve ever seen.” Atticus had met and dated quite a variety, to say the least. It was only after the fact that Atticus’s hands left the purple haired man and he took a step back giving both of them some breathing room.
Atticus might have spoken had he not heard the sound of flapping then and there. Glancing down to the ground half expecting to have dropped something in the collision, Atticus found nothing had left him, but papers were now everywhere. “Think ya lost some things,” he noted briefly before bending down to catch a few before they were taken up by the fingers of wind. It didn’t matter if it wasn’t his stuff, it was someone’s.

The reply to his initial words brought a smirk to Jae's features as it seemed his initial comment hadn't spurned the man. That was good, their meeting had been brought about my chance...or fate, if you believed in such things, but Jae certainly didn't want to insult someone he had just met. It seemed that running into him, quite literally, was going to make this night that much more interesting. At least a lot more interesting than working on the papers the rest of the night. "Oh, I am an angel now?"Jae replied easily, smirking as he did so,"Are you certain that you are not the one that fell from the heavens?" he continued before the man stepped away from him.
Jae had been so distracted by how suddenly the man had bumped into him that he hadn't realized that the papers that he was supposed to fill out and do more research on had been strewn everywhere. It wasn't until the man mentioned that he lost something that Jae realized what had happened and swore under his breath, bending down to pick up the remainder of the papers before the wind made it impossible to find them. "Thank you for this, I would be called a dead man walking if these are not returned. Work seems to enjoy giving me homework when college is out until the new year has begun,"Jae explained briefly when he noticed that the man was helping him gather the papers as well.
Between the two of them, they were able to catch all the strewn papers before the wind carried them away much to Jae's relief. "I am in your debt, sire. Surely you are the angel in disguise, not me,"Jae replied with a slight bow before accepting the papers from the other man,"My name is Fa Jae-Hwa though you may call me Jae if you prefer. Most of my colleagues and friends do. Might I ask the name of my savior?"he continued, smiling lightly as he spoke.

Atticus smirked. The thought of him of all people falling from heaven could only rightfully be pictured in Lucifer’s context. Anything else was too pure. “Nah, if anything I came crashing up through the earth’s crust,” Atticus snickered back, a smirk gripping his features. For all the hell he’d put his family through when he was younger, the dark haired man could easily imagine himself a demon already. Moreover his less than pure agenda exemplified this. Ah that…. Atticus resisted the urge to bite his lip. Here he was legal and still hadn’t even told his parents that they were never getting grandkids out of him. Ah well, not something to worry about now.
He stepped back thereafter only to notice the papers thereafter and bent down to snag a few. One narrowly escaped his grasp, and Atticus shifted a few paces to claim it before catching another one as it passed. As the purple haired man explained young man explained what the papers were, Atticus smirked. Work homework? It sounded like some kid’s nightmare. “We’re all dead men eventually anyways,” he snorted dryly. “But I guess ya don’t want your life any shorter than it already is huh?” he asked standing up again and holding out the papers in one hand.
The comment on being in debt earned a laugh and quick shake of head. “No debts, no charge,” he replied with a small shrug of shoulders. “Not a problem.” As the papers were accepted and a name was presented, Atticus blinked. Foreign names were always weird at least to him. “Jae huh?” he smirked briefly thinking something flighty fit speech like this. Too bad he wasn’t blue haired; then he’d be a blue jay. “Name is Atticus,” Atticus continued extending a hand in a more formal shake. “Ya walk this way often?”

The return reply about coming up from what Jae could only assume to be hell itself, earned a slight chuckle before his attention was brought to the runaway papers that would surely have been the death of him had he not caught them in time. Taking the papers, he thanked Atticus for surely saving his life from certain destruction. True, the head nurse wouldn't necessarily kill him but she could certainly make his life a living hell and with Christmas break coming to an end soon enough, that is the last thing he wanted to happen.
Atticus' next words brought a smirk to Jae's features as he shook his head at the question,"No, it is more like I do not wish for my life to turn into a living hell if I do not do what was asked of me. These papers are important, and it would certainly be my hide if anything happened. Though it would be the head nurse's fault for not making copies to begin with,"Jae explained briefly as he tucked the important documents inside his jacket lest they blow away again. If nothing else they wouldn't escape with the added protection of a zipper.
Upon hearing that there was in fact no debt to be paid, Jae couldn't help but smile. "Nonetheless, there surely must be something I can do to repay you," he replied as he bowed slightly. It was a force of habit that had been engrained in him since he was young and one that he had a hard time breaking even still. "A pleasure to meet you, Atticus,"Jae replied before taking the extended hand and shaking it,"I do, it is on my way to back to the apartment. I generally cut through here because it is faster, and the view is nice,"he continued before gesturing to the snow covered trees,"How about you?" ~~~ Atticus Lewis

A smirk grew on Atticus’s features as Jae explained how important the papers were and whose fault it would be if they got away from him. “Seems like someone higher up’s making a mistake then,” he snorted briefly. Jae couldn’t have been too much older than him if older at all, and entrusting what Atticus assumed was some kind of intern with such documentations didn’t sound exactly smart by anyone’s standards. Watching as the papers were put away, Atticus put that thought on the backburner. It wasn’t his problem anyways. In fact, he’d make sure he wasn’t too tied to it by defecting any manner of debt there might have been for helping as well. The smile he received after the fact was just icing on the cake. At the instance, Atticus snorted giving a small shake of head. “Nah,” the dark haired man half laughed with a simple shrug.
As names were exchanged, hands were shook, and words spoken, Atticus kept that signature smirk in place. So this guy did come around here, and even followed the same route, or so it seemed. “Yeah I just got off work,” he talked up at him setting both hands in his pockets thereafter. It was almost strange how tall the young man before him was, considering he was taller than even Atticus himself who was distinguishingly tall to begin with. However, he couldn’t say it was altogether unpleasant, just a bit surprising. “Headed back home, ya know?” he finished simply.

Jae couldn't help but smirk a little at Atticus' comment about the higher ups making a mistake. He agreed wholeheartedly but then it wasn't his place to rebuke his supervisors after all. "Yeah, but it is not like I can say anything to them. In my experience, supervisors do not like to be belittled by those under them. Alas, there is very little I can do about it except keep up with the work load that they give me,"Jae replied, shaking his head slightly at the foolishness he had to deal with. It didn't matter that it wasn't necessarily his job to take care of the important documents given to him, he had to do as he was told or get hell from the head nurse.
As Atticus said once again that he didn't have to repay him, Jae smiled once again. He wanted to do something in return but it seemed that Atticus would have none of it. Oh well, perhaps there would come a time when he would be able to return his kindness but for now he would leave the subject alone. After explaining why he was walking through the park in the first place, he would listen as Atticus explained that he had just gotten off work and nodded. "How ironic, I was just doing the same thing. Do you live far from here? Perhaps we could walk together if you wish,"Jae offered simply. If nothing else, it would be more fun to have someone to talk to while they got to their perspective homes. Maybe Atticus even lived close to his apartment, that would be a happy surprise now wouldn't it. ~~~ Atticus Lewis

Nostrils flared, and a sharp snort escaped from Atticus before it ruptured into a laugh. “There’s a difference between belittling and telling someone they’re acting like a shit lord in management,” he replied back dryly, a shake of head given after. “Upper management should be receptive to their staff or they’re going to find more than a few hundred problems. That goes for any business.” A soft breath would finish the laugh, yet the smirk on those cool lips remained. Atticus couldn’t change the system; he knew that. If Jae didn’t feel as though he could bring up issues in his own job, all that was left was to watch dominos eventually fall. More than he would admit, Atticus enjoyed watching a good collapse now and again. “Don’t work yourself too much or you’ll collapse under ‘em,” he warned briefly giving a small shrug after. That was all he would say on the matter, however.
Thereafter, a few more comments would be exchanged before the topic of home came about. Glancing off to the apartments in the distance, Atticus smirked briefly before glancing back to Jae. “I live just that way, up the street a little, the apartment complex on the right,” he commented nonchalantly making a gesture towards his building. While some part of him was aware that it wasn’t the safest thing to say where he lived, having an apartment system made it a bit vaguer anyways. “If you’re headed that way I wouldn’t mind,” he grinned briefly at Jae’s question. Turning and starting up the pathway again, he didn't even glance back to see if Jae had startd following or not. That was Atty for you, however. There was no time quite like the present after all.

A smirk played on Jae's features when he heard Atticus' retort about the management. He had a point, he couldn't very well do his job when he was being run ragged by the head nurse playing errand boy. Jae had enough work of his own without trying to keep up with the demands that the head nurse continued to pile on him. Perhaps he could ask his boss about the workload because it was really getting to be too much and he couldn't keep using his power just to be able to complete it. What would happen to him if they got out of the toy box and the power was taken away? He would still have the same amount of work to do and with school on top of work there was no possible way that hey would be able to keep up with it.
"Perhaps, you are right. I shall talk to my supervisor about the unrealistic expectations that have been imposed on me as of late,"Jae replied thoughtfully as he smirked a little at Atticus' next comment. It was true that he did have a tendency to overwork himself but that was partially because he was still in school and dealing with management that saw him as little more than a gopher boy. Yes, he was there to learn but that did not mean that management could pile everything on him like he was some kind of work horse.
"I shall keep that in mind,"Jae replied briefly before asking if Atticus wanted to walk together. Once Atticus explained where he lived, Jae nodded,"That is not too far from where I live either, at the very least it is in the same vicinity,"he continued before easily falling into step beside him. ~~~ Atticus Lewis

A look of bemusement twisted onto Atticus’s lips as Jae conceded he was right in some form or another. The look Jae gave thereafter was enough to seal the deal. Now where had he seen eyes like that before? Heh. “You’re not in med school yet,” Atticus commented, his tone almost accusing had it not been for the playful finishing note. “You shouldn’t be breaking your back just yet.” A simple self-assured not finished the argument, a small ‘heh’ coming seconds after.
Thereafter, he explained where he lived in a more general term, and started walking. The words that came behind him, and the sounds of feet falling into line with his had Atticus glancing sideways again- that was until a yawn threatened and had him glancing forwards to cover his mouth briefly. He couldn’t, no wouldn’t wait to sprawl out on his couch and take a thirty minute nap. The couch was almost softer than the bed anyways; it’d be great. Fishing a box from his pocket and pulling out a simple cigarette, he proceeded to shove it between his lips and light it, humming softly as he did so. “Ya think the weather’ll warm up soon?” he asked after a moment.
