Dedrick doesn’t like talking to people very often unless there is a reason to do so. He prefers to keep to himself and is actually rather awkward when talking to people outside of class when there is no real reason to converse. There are actually very few topics that will get Dedrick to talk as he is prone to answer any questions asked of him with a singular word or even a nod if he simply doesn’t want to talk. One of the few subjects he’ll talk about is science, and even that if it’s relating to something that he’s learning. Dedrick might come off as a bit cold or apathetic even but that is simply because he just doesn’t know how to act in a social setting. This isn’t to say he’ll go out of his way to stay away from people but he will remain silent unless there is an actual reason for conversing instead of just making small talk.
Patience is not one of Dedrick’s stronger virtues and small talk especially only proves to irritate him. There is no reason why something like ‘it’s a nice day today’ should be said to begin with, the phrase is merely meant to fill an awkward silence in an attempt to keep the conversation going. Dedrick would much rather simply leave during the silence instead of attempting to salvage whatever meaning there might still remain in talking with another person. Should he have the opportunity to meet the person who came up with the idea of ‘small talk’, Dedrick would love to tell him just how meaningless such a thing was. Alas, there is no possible way that will happen but should someone attempt to make small talk with Dedrick he would more than likely just get up and walk away instead of trying to talk about something as meaningless as the weather or even what shoes would be the best to wear in the rain. After having been forced to endure such things when he was in the military, Dedrick loathes trying to continue pointless conversations. There is one good thing about being back in school that Dedrick has found however; the only ‘superiors’ to him are the teachers and other officials in the school and thus he is free to walk away without any fear of punishment from another peer.
Dedrick doesn’t simply walk away from every conversation however but he is more prone to do so if he hasn’t had very much sleep. Even if the topic interests him Dedrick knows all too well that if he isn’t coherent that he won’t be able to bring much to the conversation as a result. That and his recurring insomnia possibly makes him more awkward around people than normal which gives him all the more reason to look for a quick exit from the conversation before he makes a fool of himself. However, when Dedrick is coherent and has had a decent night’s sleep (however rare that may be), he is actually quite pleasant to talk to. Even as awkward as he might be around people in general, Dedrick opens up (at least a little) when something he is unfamiliar with is brought up. Learning in general excites him especially since his power focuses on the ability to gather information from distant sources. Any new piece of information will generally lead to a flood of questions about said topic until Dedrick is satisfied or the other party claims ignorance on the subject.
Should this be the case, Dedrick takes it upon himself to find the answer if only to tell the other person what they should have known in the first place. Despite being rather awkward around people, Dedrick actually enjoys teaching others and clarifying confusing topics but will only do so if the other person is willing. Dedrick doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to studying or teaching something that he is well versed in. If someone has the wish to have a study session, it will be just that and nothing else. Any attempt to divert the conversation away from the topic of study is frowned upon and will result in Dedrick’s imminent retreat if the other party continues to refuse to concentrate on the material; the way he sees it, if anyone truly wanted his help they would ask it of him and then concentrate on the subject and what he was telling them rather than talk about everything but what was actually relevant. Knowledge is precious after all, and the fact that anyone would treat his attempts in relaying his own knowledge to them as meaningless is unforgiveable.
History Dedrick was born to two high ranking military personnel; at the time his mother gave birth his father was overseas. For the first year of his life, the only interaction he had with him was over the telephone or over video chat. When his father did come back home, Dedrick was shy at first having never met the man before. He would warm up to the man in time and though both of his parents were busy with their perspective jobs, they always set aside time to spend with him. Since he had a lot of time to himself he usually spent it playing with friends at their houses or being looked after by the neighbors when neither of his parents were able to watch him. They moved around a lot and it was hard to make friends but Dedrick was a shy boy at best and didn’t mind the constant moving as long as he had his family.
Growing up was hard for Dedrick considering his father was strict and didn’t want his son to be spoiled to say the least of things. Under pressure from his father, Dedrick joined boy scouts and found that he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball with his dad. It was fun being able to play with his dad who was usually so strict and pushed him to do his best. Sometimes it wouldn’t be as fun playing with him because his father would criticize him for not catching the ball or forgetting to dribble the basketball. They were just little things but the games stopped being fun when Dedrick was worried about every move he made and whether it would make his father yell at him again. Nonetheless, sports did help Dedrick come out of his shell a little more as he made friends with the other players and with the other boys in his troop.
Around the time he was in middle school, Dedrick had to move once again and became more withdrawn. He resented being uprooted so often because his parents kept getting transferred and wished that they could just stay in one place for once. He became noticeably more withdrawn and though he still participated in sports, Dedrick found that he enjoyed math and science much more than baseball or basketball. Sure they were fun and one of the first things he had ever done with his father but science was just more exciting to him. When he wasn’t being carted around to different games or other activities that his father insisted upon, Dedrick spent most of his time buried in books and joined a science club to learn more. He actively participated in science fairs and loved to see all the experiments that the other students came up with.
High school didn’t seem much different than middle school, there was more pressure to get a girlfriend certainly but Dedrick found it difficult to talk to people when it didn’t have to do with science or another subject he knew. Small talk was uncomfortable and awkward and more often than not he found himself walking away or just not responding when someone tried to force a conversation to continue. He may not have had many friends due to his inability to talk about much of anything other than science or sports but Dedrick preferred it that way. It was easier to leave if his father happened to get transferred again after all. During this time, Dedrick’s father pushed him harder and put him on a strict training regimen to prepare him for boot camp since it was assumed that his son would join the army just like him. Truth be told, Dedrick didn’t mind too much, it was something he could do with his father where he wouldn’t yell too much at him and it made his mother happy to see them working out together. It didn’t matter that Dedrick’s own interests lied elsewhere, his father expected him to do what he was told and that was that.
Shortly after his high school graduation, Dedrick would enlist and be sent to boot camp. Boot camp was difficult to say the least of things and had he not have grown up with a strict military family, Dedrick might have very well folded under the pressure. As it stood, he was already used to taking orders and though he was sore most every day, Dedrick didn’t quit and continued to push himself, determined to make his father proud. After boot camp, Dedrick attended the college courses that he was told to and found that he loved every minute of it. Sure it was hard balancing his other duties with mounds of school work but it was worth it in the end. He loved learning new things, especially where science was concerned and soon got his degree before he was sent overseas.
If Dedrick had thought boot camp was hell that was nothing compared to the horrors he saw when he was deployed. He watched good friends get shot at, blown to pieces, and even burned alive; everyday was a fight to survive and it was all he could do to keep his head down and live to see another day. Those images changed Dedrick and it was all he could do to come home and act like everything was normal. His father said that he understood, that he had been there and that it would fade over time. He was wrong. No matter what Dedrick did, those memories haunted him, he couldn’t forget them and found that he had trouble sleeping because of the constant nightmares. While the friends he had made in the army chose not to re-enlist and became civilians, Dedrick opted to extend his contract and was deployed once again. This time proved to be worse than the first time he had been assigned overseas and there were a few times that Dedrick believed he was going to die. It was hell on earth and Dedrick found himself wishing he had joined his friends instead of going back into the fray.
When his deployment was over, Dedrick decided to visit his friends in Georgia during his leave. He simply couldn’t face seeing his father again and being told to get over it. How could his father, or anyone else understand unless they had been there? Unfortunately for him, shortly after Dedrick arrived in Georgia, the event happened and he was stuck in the toy box. To be honest, it was something of a relief not to have to return to the army because after all that he had seen, Dedrick didn’t want to return to that warzone. His wish was that he would no longer be in the army was easily granted and Dedrick was given an insignia and power interestingly enough. He would start attending college shortly after that while working at the sporting goods store his friends were kind enough to offer him a position at. It might not have been what he was expecting but it was nice to be able to have a ‘normal’ life after all the horrors he had seen. Insignia Level 1
Dedrick’s insignia is a thorn bracelet tattoo on his right wrist. In order to activate his insignia he simply has to brush the tattoo.
Panther Summon - Level 1 – Once his insignia is activated, Dedrick has the ability to summon a fully grown black panther for approximately 15 minutes a day. Standing at a little over three feet and weighing about two hundred pounds, the panther is a little larger than most. However, it is very stealthy and able to easily sneak up on its prey whatever that may be with paws that make almost no sound. There is nothing really notable about the panther other than the vibrant blue eyes instead of brown or darker colored eyes.
Passive – Shadow is a panther cub that follows Dedrick everywhere. Still very much a baby he doesn’t like to be away from his ‘daddy’ any longer than he has to. More often than not he can be found literally shadowing Dedrick, hence his namesake and will try to act tough if cornered but he is really just a big softy. He is clumsy and tends to trip over his own paws more often than not but as part of Dedrick’s summon, Shadow isn’t completely powerless.
