Someday \o/
History Born to a single mother, Gavin would never know anything about his father. He would never be given a name, he would never receive a description, and he would never see the man who contributed to his existence. This seemed to be a common theme with his mother, who already had a daughter, his half-sister, who was about three years older than him. Gavin would be but two years old when his younger brother joined the family as well. He can’t remember the man who fathered his brother, and neither of them would ever know.
It wasn’t that Gavin’s mother was a bad woman, she was actually a very sweet woman, she was just horribly naïve and gullible. People were constantly taking advantage of her, and the family had to go hungry more than once because she spent the last of their money on something ridiculous or simply gave it away to someone “who needed it more”. Even as a child, it was clear that the redhead had taken after whoever his father might have been, and he often confronted his mother about the fact that they needed bread more than a bracelet that balanced your chi.
He quickly learned to eat whatever he could at school, and often talked other children out of their lunches so he could save that and bring it home with him. The food was divided evenly not only among his siblings, but with his mother as well. No matter how much she annoyed him, no matter how many bad decisions she made, he couldn’t bring himself to be cruel to her – harsh, horribly harsh, but never cruel.
By the time he was twelve, Gavin had worked his way to the head of his family. His mother handed over whatever money she had each month to him, and he appropriated it as best he could. It was never enough, though. By the time the rent and utilities were paid, there was barely enough to buy food. His elder sister was almost old enough to work, but he’d learned at a young age that ‘almost’ didn’t pay any bills, nor did it put food in anyone’s mouth. He can’t remember exactly when he started stealing from the local grocery store. It started out of necessity, clearly, but before long he was doing it simply for the rush it gave him. He planned things carefully, often enlisting the help of his younger brother to steal larger items. His sister learned to cook, and in this way the children supported their mother – even if it should have been the other way around.
It would be right before his sister’s sixteenth birthday, right before things were supposed to get better, that the children would finally be caught. Perhaps the authorities would have went easy on them if they’d been stealing food at the time, but attempting to steal a very expensive necklace was met with significantly less sympathy – not to mention that if they told about their home situation they would likely be taken away from their mother, and none of the children wanted to be split up. Gavin’s sister took the fall, and since she was a first time offender she was just placed on probation, but that slashed her ability to get a job.
If he’d had a choice, Gavin would have likely stopped shop lifting for a while after that. Getting in trouble shook his confidence pretty badly, and it wasn’t until his younger brother started crying from hunger that he tried again. He’d learned to never steal from the same place too often, and thankfully the large city they lived in allowed them to go unnoticed most of the time. He gradually fell back into stealing food to feed his family, but it would be several years before he started stealing non-necessities again. During this time, his sister was able to get a job, but she could only work part-time at minimum wage. The money helped, of course, but that wasn’t enough either. It might have been, actually, if he’d sat down and thought about it, but he used the excuse of providing for the family to justify his kleptomania. No one questioned him. Why would they? He’d been taking care of them since he could talk, basically.
As his sister’s eighteenth birthday came and went, she seemed to fall in with the wrong crowd. She had plenty of money and items that she brought home that couldn’t be explained, and she dodged his questions every time he posed them. It wasn’t that he minded, really, he was just worried. Brief glimpses of the people his sister was spending time with told him they were less than savory individuals. They were all at least ten years older than her, firstly, and a lot of them liked to brag about their time spent in prison. He tried his best to get her to leave them, but she wouldn’t listen. She argued that they needed the money, and what could he say to that? They did need the money.
It wouldn’t be a year before his sister was killed in some sort of turf war. It was the biggest shock he’d ever received in his life, and processing the emotions was nigh on impossible. His mother ceased to function, refusing to attend her job. Perhaps if she’d been there for longer she would have gotten some leniency, but the woman had never been able to hold down a job, and she had only been at that one for two weeks. She was quickly fired, and proceeded to rot on the couch. It was two months before his sixteenth birthday, and no amount of stolen food could pay the rent or the utilities. He tried everything to get his mother off the couch. Coaxing, screaming, reasoning, even breaking some of their possessions – nothing could get her to move. Meanwhile his brother seemed to be shell-shocked. While the younger boy followed direction, he no longer spoke and he only ever ate or did anything, really, when he was told to. At the tender age of fifteen, Gavin was finally beginning to crack under the weight that he’d always been too young to bear.
For several weeks, he did nothing other than scream at his brother and mother. If they noticed the stark change in his personality, neither of them gave any indication of it. He even spent several days away from home, coming back to find that no one had eaten and his brother hadn’t attended school at all. Upon finding that there was literally no food at all in the house, Gavin made one of the hardest decisions of his young life. Despite not wanting to, despite everything, he finally got in contact with child protective services. He wasn’t quite sure what hurt more: the fact that his mother didn’t even respond when he and his brother were taken away, or the knowledge that she wouldn’t be able to care for herself without him.
The brothers were separated rather quickly, the promises of the social workers who had come to get them meaning less than nothing, apparently. There was nothing Gavin could do to keep them together, and he became despondent rather quickly. It felt as though the life he had carefully crafted was spiraling out of his control. His sister was dead, his brother was gone, and his mother was probably homeless. And there was nothing he could do. He wallowed in self-pity for nearly a year before he finally forced thoughts of his family from his head. They were beyond his help now, there was nothing he could do. He closed them out of his heart as best he could and moved on, warping into something altogether colder than he had been previously.
His last couple of years before independence were spent in a foster home. Without a family to provide for, everything that he stole was carefully hoarded. Jewelry was sold to the right people, and he never hit the same place twice if he could help it. By the time his eighteenth birthday did roll around, he had a good sum of cash saved up – enough to get his own apartment. He sought out his younger brother, but after finding that the other boy had been adopted and seemed happy, he faded back into the shadows again. As much as he would have liked to reconnect, he kept his brother’s best interests at heart – or so he thought. He started college that fall, working toward a degree as an English/Literature teacher. Always having been intelligent, he worked his way through school with ease. He held down a job, made money on the side, and kept all of his grades above B’s.
It would be when sketches of his face started appearing in shop windows that he decided he needed to leave the city he’d spent his entire life in. He had an ungodly amount of money saved up, and finally splurged to buy himself a nicer car. A two weeks’ notice was put in at the high school where he worked, and once those weeks were up, he just drove. He drove south until he came upon a city that seemed nice enough – Sumner City. He stopped his car, got a hotel, and started working toward settling in the city. Within two years he was teaching at the high school and living in a rather nice apartment. However, he couldn’t quite stop himself from stealing things. He didn’t need the money anymore, but sometimes he would steal little things and not even notice. He did his best to stay away from bigger items, though. He wasn’t exactly ready to hop town again, after all.
As the event happened, and Gavin was trapped in the city he had settled in several years previously, his biggest shock happened to come from the faction he was sorted into. Despite his thieving ways, he followed every other law down to traffic laws – or at least he did when they suited him. Either way, the power was rather welcome. With it, he started stealing larger items once again. Well, thievery was really one of the ‘lesser’ crimes, wasn’t it? He did wish for his brother to be transported to Sumner City, but if the other man was, he has yet to see him.
Insignia Level 1 Electricity Manipulation – Level One – Rather than manifest in the ability to control electricity in the air, Gavin is able to control electricity in circuits and similar things. He can stop the flow of electric current to a certain light – or camera – for example. Or he can redirect the electricity in the room to a certain appliance and cause it to overload. This is rather useful for him in stealing things, since he can either deprive or overload the cameras in his vicinity. To activate his power, he simply has to touch the insignia behind his ear. Thereafter he can place his hand on the wall and get a feel for the electrical circuits in the room. Once he has a good ‘feel’ for where everything is located, he can control the flow of electricity in the room for about fifteen minutes, though this time lessens based on the size of the room/building.
His insignia takes the form of a singular rose behind his ear.
Copper – Passive – Gavin’s passive takes the form of a rather long piece of copper. It seems to be able to change size and shape. Some days he wears it as a ring, some days as a necklace, and some days as a bracelet. It seems to choose on its own what it wants to be that day. He can channel electricity through it if he chooses to.
Extra - Gavin has never had a boyfriend, girlfriend, or any real romantic experience.
- He keeps a close eye on his students, and tends to leave necessities in their lockers such as food, clothing, or even money.
