History
Katsu was born the last of three children in the Nakahara family to a couple of loving, if protective parents. From the very beginning it was evident that he was different from his siblings and constantly cried as a child. He wasn’t calm like Makoto had been or loud like Shizuko had been but rather it seemed that there was always something wrong with him to the point that it became commonplace to hear his shrill cries as he tried to convey that something was wrong. It wasn’t until a doctor officially diagnosed Katsu with sickle cell anemia that he seemed to settle down as his parents learned how to deal with the disease. Even with knowing what was wrong, Katsu was constantly in and out of the hospital for one thing or another which it was clear even as a babe that he hated.
Despite being in and out of the hospital, Katsu was a high-spirited, energetic young boy that didn’t want to stay still for very long. He was running before he learned to walk and seemed to always want to be with his siblings. Katsu hated the doctors and complained loudly whenever he had to go there until he learned that throwing a tantrum wouldn’t change the fact that he would still be going. Even still he was never the best patient and hated sitting still for long periods of time, he wanted to be playing or at least doing something and it was rather difficult to get him to stay still unless he was promised something in return for being good. Due to the nature of his illness, he couldn’t be active for very long but it was difficult to explain to the energetic boy that he shouldn’t run around and play as much as his siblings did. There were times when Katsu would have a sickle cell crisis and had to be attached to a breathing machine but thankfully this didn’t happen quite as often due to the medicine he was taking to prevent it.
Katsu’s health was remained unstable until he was two years old and they were able to manage better his pain better without keeping him under constant supervision. He was allowed to play with his siblings more and even allowed to be outside if it wasn’t cold. Katsu loved exploring and being with his siblings though he still had to be reminded to be careful constantly. He just wanted to explore and play just like Shizuko and Makoto did but as long as he was able to be with his siblings he didn’t mind too much. For the most part he listened when his parents told him to come inside or that it was time to rest but other times he didn’t want to listen and grew to hate the word ‘no’. It seemed like he was always being told no when he tried to follow after his siblings climbing over rocks and whatever else they were doing. There were even a few times that he was allowed on play dates and made friends quite easily, he liked being able to spend time with other kids and playing with them.
Shortly after Katsu turned three the family went on a trip to Japan to visit the family they had there. Katsu loved spending time with his brother and sister and all the new cousins he found out he had. There were a lot more people that paid attention to him this time and he wasn’t told ‘no’ near as often as before which was nice for a change. He loved being able to explore and run around with his relatives and even when he was hurting he was still the center of attention. Japan was wonderful and he wished that they could stay there and even put up a fuss when he was told they had to come back home. Katsu had had so much fun there that he didn’t ever want to go home again, not when he had had so much more fun here. Their parents would not be persuaded otherwise however and they returned home shortly thereafter.
Once they returned home, Katsu was quickly distracted with the excitement of actually attending school for the first time. Shizuko and Makoto had already started going to school at that point and it was lonely at home all by himself. He had become a little clingier to his siblings when they did come home and asked them countless questions about school and what they did. When the day finally came for Katsu to attend school he wasn’t afraid at all, in fact he was looking forward to learning and experiencing everything he had heard. At first, Katsu absolutely loved school and couldn’t stop talking about all the fun things he was learning. Over time however he slowly stopped talking as much about it at all until one day he got injured during one of his episodes. According to the school, Katsu had been bullied by the other kids and when they were playing on the playground that day he had been pushed off the play equipment when the kid believed that he was lying about hurting so much. He was rushed off to the emergency room after that where it was found that he had only sprained his wrist. Despite the assurance that Katsu was fine, his parents were furious about what had happened and promised him that they would make sure it never happened again.
When the event happened, Katsu thought that the god was just a dream and was confused about the wish that he was supposed to make. Was this god like some kind of genie that could make all the bad things go away? After some prompting, Katsu wished that he wouldn’t get hurt anymore like when he was pushed off the jungle gym. The wish was granted but for some reason, when he woke up he couldn’t find his parents anywhere. Scared, Katsu started to cry until Makoto helped him get ready for school just like normal and that helped some. When they got back home however their parents were still nowhere to be found and after asking for help finding them, Katsu was placed in another home with his siblings. It was scary not knowing where Mommy and Daddy were but as long as he had his siblings, everything would be ok…it had to be.
Insignia Level 1
Katsu’s insignia is a golden flame on the back of his hand. When he activates it, it appears to glow and flicker just like a real flame would.
Mind Switch- Level 1 – Katsu can switch minds with his familiar for a limited amount of time when he sets his hand on the familiar’s head and looks him in the eye. Thereafter, Katsu’s consciousness will reside in his familiar’s body and the familiar’s consciousness will reside in Katsu’s body for approximately ten to fifteen minutes. Once they switch bodies, Katsu is able to do anything his familiar is able to do including fly, chirp, and even talk if he should choose to. When the time limit is up, no matter how far apart Katsu is from his body, he is able to switch back almost instantaneously. If he tries to stay in his familiar’s body for too long he gets a severe migraine and it’s extremely hard for him to concentrate. Should Katsu try and switch with his familiar too often, he runs the risk of hurting himself because it takes too much energy. Thus, Katsu can only use his ability up to three times a day, if that.
Passive – Takeshi is a white umbrella cockatoo with an attitude. He loves to show off and isn’t shy about letting others know what he wants. Very much spoiled, he is treated more like a pampered pet than anything else and knows how to get his way more often than not. Takeshi is able to speak limited English but can converse fluently in Japanese when he wants to. He’s very stubborn and doesn’t like being told he can’t do something and will bite anyone who tries to tell him otherwise.
Extra
- Katsu has sickle cell anemia
- He has a favorite stuffed animal that he got for his 5th birthday from his parents that he takes with him everywhere.
- One of Katsu’s favorite things to do is draw, especially if it’s with chalk on the sidewalk or driveway.
