He's kind of bitter, but he's a nice kid at the end of the day. For now.
History Born to Jessica Ramsey and Jaden Alabaster, for the first five years of his life, Anthony would live alone with his mother. His parents’ relationship fell apart before he was even born, but his mother didn’t seem to have any hard feelings about it. He was never told anything awful about his father, his mother never tried to sway him one way or the other. She was always almost coldly honest with him about the situation, being a more logical than emotional woman. Questions about his father were answered truthfully no matter what they were, even if the truth hurt.
Questions that she couldn’t readily give him an answer to, such as, “Does Daddy love me?” were directed toward a father that he would never utter these words to. Being a child, Anthony loved his father even if he wasn’t in the picture a lot. He enjoyed the time that he did spend with him, and did his best to be a good boy so his father would want to see him again. In the end, however, it seemed as though nothing he did was good enough because eventually he would start seeing his father less and less. His mother was ill-equipped to deal with his bitterness and upset over this fact. She worked most of the day, and he was often left in the hands of babysitters or nannies. He never wanted for anything, though. He got all the toys he wanted, he never went hungry. No, the only things that he didn’t get were attention and affection, and of course these were the only things he wanted.
Once he started kindergarten, Anthony exhibited an extremely high intelligence. He seemed to be able to soak up information as easily as breathing, and he honestly loved it. He loved learning new things and surpassing his classmates. However, these good grades would only get him attention from her mother for about a month before she started expecting them. Quite unintentionally, before he even finished his first year of school, his mother reinforced his habit of getting bad grades. One failed test that got him a thirty minute lecture equated in his mind to a time where he could have his mother’s undivided attention. His grades began to drop, and the only way his mother could get him to actually try was to start taking things away from him and punishing him.
It was around this time, as well, that his mother started dating the man she would go on to marry. Anthony didn’t really have a problem with him. At the beginning, Mr. Vaughn gave him a lot of attention and made sure that he felt included and important. He was taken on fishing trips and the like, and he honestly found himself loving the man and looking up to him. Even if he couldn’t get his biological parents’ attention, he was at least getting someone’s. When he was seven, his mother married the man. They both took his last name, and it wouldn’t be long before his mother was telling him that she was pregnant again. He didn’t realize at the time that the babies would take all of the attention he was managing to get – so he was excited. However, that excitement wore off within a month of the twins’ birth.
He would find himself receiving less attention than he ever had in his life as the twins’ needs were seemingly put before his own. Of course, newborns require a lot of attention anyway, and perhaps it was just the way he perceived it. Either way, the boy started acting out more than ever. His grades dropped to F’s and his teachers were constantly complaining that he would never listen to them or be quiet in class. No matter how many toys were taken away from him, no matter how many privileges revoked, no matter how many spankings he received he didn’t seem willing to shape back up. The negative attention he was receiving happened to be the only attention he was getting. Besides, it didn’t matter if he tried anyway, right? No one praised him for making A’s or sitting still, after all. He was eventually placed in a separate class for “slower” children, and at least managed to pass since he had to actively try to fail it.
He was ten, and more rebellious than ever, when his elder sister sought him out. Being so young, he had only been vaguely aware of other siblings on his father’s side, but he hadn’t thought much of it. His mother readily allowed him to spend time with the girl, and her attention seemed to bring him out of his rebellion at least slightly. He found himself forming a bond with her that he hadn’t readily formed with his two younger siblings – though of course they were only three at the time. His grades improved enough that he was placed back in a regular class, and under growing interest from him, his first guitar was purchased as well. He was put in classes for it, and he learned to play quickly, seemingly having a natural talent. His mother mentioned something about his uncle being “musically inclined”, but Anthony was just happy to be getting her attention – even a small amount of it – from something. Either way, he refused to see his own talent, believing himself to be mediocre at best.
Years passed in this manner, and while his sister’s attention certainly helped, it did little to cull the cynical and flippant nature that had formed within him. He learned to expect the worst from every situation, trained himself to expect nothing from anyone. If he had no expectations, he couldn’t ever be disappointed or hurt again. Under a seemingly bright and friendly personality lurked a child who had developed a warped view of the world. He refused to try at anything, refused to put effort into even the important parts of his life. Less time was spent at home, most of it being spent at the park or just wandering around. He wanted his mother to care, honestly, but she was too wrapped up in his younger siblings whom he was growing to resent. He barely passed his classes and clamored for the attention of his classmates, quickly turning into the class clown to get it.
When the event happened, and he was approached by a god, he handled the situation just like he handled all other situations – he turned it into a joke. His wish was a joke, instead of wishing for the attention he wanted more than anything, he simply wished for a new gaming console. Well, he got his wish, with the system appearing sometime the next day. His insignia, a pair of handcuffs running across the bottom of his right wrist, appeared and his familiar did as well.
Insignia Level 1 Escape Artistry – Level One – Anthony has the ability to escape from unpleasant situations or traps much better than the average person. He can contort his body to cut ties or slip out of them, even going as far as to pop some of his bones out of place, since his power always ensures that they go back into the right place. He seems to have an innate knowledge of how to get out of just about any room or situation, all he really has to do is follow his gut. Of course, he must touch the insignia on his wrist to activate the power. If he can’t manage to do that, the power is useless. Depending on the situation (like whether he’s trying to get out of bonds or a room) he can either use his power once to escape the bonds, or he can use it for about fifteen minutes to scope out the room/situation. Either takes a toll on him, mentally or physically, and he is usually left weak and shaky, especially if he pushes himself. The physical side leaves him sore, and the mental side leaves him with headaches.
Jake – Passive – Anthony’s passive takes the form of a yellow Labrador retriever. There doesn’t really seem to be anything special about the dog, honestly. Jake listens well enough to Anthony, and sometimes he seems like he’s trying to keep the boy out of trouble, but mostly he’s just a dog. He enjoys treats, going to the park, and getting attention.
Extra - He likes to skateboard a lot. He tends to skate to school or just anywhere he needs to go, really.
- He can play the guitar really well, but only his mother knows about it as he tends to keep his talents hidden.
- He is actually very smart and he could do exceedingly well in school if he wanted to, but he doesn't. Sometimes he makes bad grades on purpose.
