She’s a puppy.
History
Born into slavery, the only good thing in her life was Rania’s mother, Jennah, who sacrificed everything in order to keep her child. The master however wanted nothing to do with mother and daughter; Jennah was his property after all and it wouldn’t do any good for her to be unable to work due to her infant daughter. Thus, Jennah would be sold shortly after giving birth but mercifully, the child was not separated from her. The child would grow alongside her mother until she was old enough to do menial tasks around the house wherein she would be dubbed Raziya. Rania was simply too regal a name for a slave and if she was to learn her place, a more suitable name would have to be given. Nevertheless, Jennah still called her child Rania when they were alone as their little secret, a way to give her daughter at least a taste of freedom. Unfortunately, even this little happiness would not last forever as mother and daughter were once again sold wherein Rania would experience her first auction at two-years old. The fact that everyone had to bare themselves to the sellers was the most humiliating moment of her young life. If it weren’t for Jennah’s patience and gentle words, there would have been a good chance that the young child could have been separated. Since the child was still so dependent on her mother, Jennah was allowed to keep her daughter. The master that took them in however was less understanding to say the least of things and tattooed Rania with the mark of a slave so that she learned her place. Though Jennah begged and pleaded for the sake of her child, there would be no arguing with the order and thus Rania was given a tattoo in the shape of a barcode. As punishment for daring to stand up to the new master however, Jennah was forced to play a part in the application process and carve her initials into her daughter’s skin. Thereafter, Rania became much more subdued then the cheerful girl she had been before. Her personality warped into pleasing her master in order to avoid being hurt like that again though despite this, she was constantly punished in order to keep Jennah in her place. Since Jennah cared for her daughter more than her own life, this cruelty was made to break both mother and daughter lest they forget who they belonged to. Eventually even this cruelty didn’t seem to faze Rania as she grew accustomed to it and learned that it was part of life. Rania had to be strong for mother, if Jennah saw how badly she was suffering, then she would start to lose heart and that was something Rania didn’t want. The master however didn’t seem to appreciate Rania’s behavior and instead sold her, this time without her mother. Rania was devastated; the last thing she wanted to do was be separated from Jennah, the only constant person in her life. Every friend she had made was torn away in one fell swoop along with her mother as Rania was carted off to yet another auction where she had to be subjected to humiliation yet again. This warped Rania’s personality even more as her young mind decided right then to never get close to anybody thereafter; it would hurt less to be separated that way. From then on, Rania simply did as she was told without as much as a word of protest. If she could stay with one master, then she could perhaps find her mother again, or at least leave clues to let her know where she was. Unfortunately this would be deemed impossible as Rania wasn’t allowed to learn how to read or write except for what was necessary to do her job. She was expected to learn quickly despite her native language being completely different from the strange dialect her new master was speaking. Rania’s thirst for knowledge however worked in her benefit as she worked hard to learn what her master wanted her to in order to please them. Rania continued with her daily tasks and learned as much of she could of the newest language as quickly as she could. She wanted to please her master, that was what was important above all else. This master however didn’t seem pleased with her progress no matter what she did and constantly abused her, punishing her for being so slow and even denying her food. Rania took the abuse in stride and did her best not to show how fearful she was of her master. It was well known that he was an abusive man and had even killed slaves that disobeyed him or spoke out of turn. Eventually, the master sold her so she could be someone else’s problem. By this time, Rania was used to moving around frequently and wasn’t fazed by the sale process, this time however, she was developing into more of a young lady and a lot more men touched her than usual. Rania wrote it off as normal and didn’t think too much about it until someone finally bought her and even gave her some brand new, beautiful clothing that she had never seen before. It was nothing like the rags she had worn before while doing servant work though they were certainly more revealing than she was used to. Eager to please her new master however, Rania donned the new attire and got to work doing the chores she was accustomed to. Her new master had other ideas however and ordered Rania to his room where she would wait for him, terrified that she had done something wrong. When her master finally did enter the room, Rania was shocked to say the least of things to find that he wanted her to do an entirely different form of work for him. That was the first time Rania was forced to give herself to her master, and it wouldn’t be the last. Rania’s new master came for her often, terrifying her to no end. She tried resisting, tried to escape countless times but each time she was simply beaten into submission. Eventually he would grow tired of her and Rania would be sold again, and again, more frequently than ever before. Rania eventually lost all hope and gave into what would be her fate from then on. Her master had made it clear that her life was not her own, and they could do what they pleased with her. It was her duty to please her master, and that was all, whatever that may entail. Once her master tired of her, Rania was sent to yet another different country, London this time. The culture was far more conservative than she was used to but despite this change of scenery, her ‘job’, if it could be called that, remained the same. This time however, her master was rather cruel when he asked for her and. Months went by in this same manner but the abuse only seemed to grow worse. Rania tried asking him not to, but this only made things worse in the long run.
Months passed much in this manner with Rania fearing for her life more often than not. She had experienced abuse before certainly, but nothing as frightening as this. The other slaves and servants were just as terrified of him as Rania was and there seemed to be no end to it. Rania was terrified that he would be the death of her and started stealing little things here and there so she could have money to be able to run away. One night, Rania’s master called for her just like normal and was told to wait until he came for her. However this time she climbed out of the window with the small amount of money she had been able to gather. Clearly she wasn’t dressed for the cold weather outside but this meant little to Rania as she ran as far and as fast as she could away from that accursed house.
In her panic to get away, Rania didn’t watch where she was going and ran into a woman, and fell backwards onto the pavement as a result. Hurriedly apologizing for her actions, and rose to leave lest anyone recognize her and take her back but the woman stopped her. At first, this made Rania panic all the more but the woman spoke calmly and reassured her that it was alright and even offered to give her a room for the night amongst other things. Rania agreed, if only because she didn’t believe turning down the woman was an option and was taken to the woman’s home. At first, Rania was scared that the woman, whom she would learn was Maxine, would take her back but as time passed it became clear that this wasn’t the case. Instead, she was encouraged to learn and was even allowed to go to school and given a chance to actually do something fun instead of working all the time. It was odd having free will after all this time and at first Rania didn’t know what to do with herself but she felt safe for once in her life. There was nobody threatening her if she didn’t do something, no one waiting to punish her if she didn’t listen to directions. For the first time in her life, she was able to be herself, whatever that meant.
Now that she was out from under her cruel master’s thumb, Rania flourished and did well in school. It was challenging certainly after years of never being allowed to so much look at a book but she caught on quickly. Rania wanted to learn and with the help of the teachers at school along with several private tutors, she was finally able to gain the knowledge that she had been deprived of for so long. She even had a family of sorts that looked out for her, protected her even, something that hadn’t happened since as far back as she could remember. It was hard work to get caught up in all that she had missed certainly, but it didn’t take near as long for Rania to graduate. With Maxine’s encouragement, she would go on to attend college for a master’s degree in language.
During the time Rania was going to college, Maxine took a group of people to America in order to establish a base for the Grey Knights there. Rania didn’t really understand the concept of family or why Maxine called the members her ‘children,’ but she trusted Maxine with her life and thought little of it. One day something strange happened however and she was suddenly in Georgia with Maxine. As it turned out, Maxine had wished for more of her ‘children’ to be there and thus she had been sent to the Georgia in an odd toy box game that the deities had decided to play. Rania didn’t really care how she had gotten there though, the important thing was that she was with Maxine and that was that. When the deity asked what her wish would be, Rania promptly said that she wanted to protect Maxine and stay with her. Her wish was granted in the form of her insignia and power which made Rania happy to say the least of things. It didn’t matter that she was in a strange country, as long as she was with Maxine then she would be happy.
Insignia Level 1
Rania’s insignia is a paw print and scratch marks on her right shoulder that is about size of a tennis ball. In order to use her power she has to hold her hand directly over the paw print for a few moments before it activates.
Wolf Shifter - Level 1 – Rania has the ability to shift into a red wolf at will once she activates her power. The transformation itself takes time and is inherently painful until she completely changes into a wolf. It takes a lot of energy to transform and Rania is unable to even attempt to shift if she is sick or badly injured. Once she has fully shifted, she has all the abilities a red wolf would have along with any natural, feral tendencies. As a pack oriented creature, Rania is still fiercely loyal to Maxine, whom she sees as the ‘pack leader’ even as a wolf. She is only able to shift once or twice per day but given the painful nature of the transformation, Rania tends to stay in one form or the other for long periods of time. After she changes back into a human from a wolf, she is extremely tired and tends to sleep a lot afterwards to regain the energy she has lost. As a side effect of the power, Rania tends to eat a lot of food, especially proteins like steak or any kind of red meat that she can get her hands on.
Passive – Rania’s passive is a book that looks similar to that of an encyclopedia. It is able to show her information about any topic that it thinks will be useful if Rania requests it. However, it has a crude sense of humor and will sometimes bring up the most random unrelated topics or will just remain blank. The book is able to double as a journal of sorts in which the book can ‘talk’ back to anyone that is writing in it though it seems to be rather sarcastic and snarky to those that ask seemingly obvious questions or if it simply doesn’t feel like answering any questions.
