With an eloquent tongue filled with exquisite vocabulary, Maxine is a woman of charm and gentleness. She is the woman that asks you to please sit down at a table and share a cup of tea with her, yet should you resist, she is just as willing to accommodate and let you leave should you choose. In small talk, she is careful, probing, and smooth, searching for a topic that is neutral and pleasant more frequently than not. Her interests are vast, and her knowledge base large, yet as a jack of all trades, she will admit to being a master of no singular art.
Maxine enjoys listening to others especially those that express their passions for something, and most feel that she takes a legitimate interest in others that is comforting to many. She is not cutting, crude, or vicious in these instances— even when she doesn’t happen to agree with whatever someone is saying. In fact, her feature is so pleasantly neutral, it’s rather difficult to tell what she’s thinking. It is this general notion that sometimes pops into others’ minds. She seems a perfect patient lady— too perfect.
Natural perception is her strongest area, and her confidence in this fact is unrivaled. Her prudence shines in all areas giving way to a careful business woman with an eye for pinpointing the strengths and weaknesses of others, and Maxine will use them how she sees fit. Whatever the situation, Maxine feels capable of moving forwards – even if it means taking several steps back. The world and everything in it is a game to her, and the woman refuses to lose. In her mind, as long as she has not admitted to defeat, it has yet to happen. This inner strength is her double edged blade, yet she swings in well when necessary.
Surprisingly, Maxine is exceptionally shrewd, but few would know this right off from a naturally elegant and affluent mannerism. Behind closed doors, the woman would not spend a dime passed what was absolutely necessary, but towards others, she is more than willing to spend for elegance’ sake. Appearances mean the world in the business she’s in— both businesses. She has an image to maintain and will rarely put it down. As far as Maxine is concerned, her mask is a part of herself.
History
English nobility only existed in name by the time Maxine was born into the Foster clan, yet ancient family money recycled through careful investments in banking firms continued to let them live affluently. The Fosters could want for nothing, and by extension, Maxine could want for nothing early on. Her parents were civil, lenient creatures that preferred their work to raising a child, and thus she grew predominately in the arms of a handmaid. Despite this, the handmaid was not subservient to childish desires nor was she fearful of being fired. She kept the child from growing unruly and taught her many of life’s lessons that probably should have been instilled by her mother.
As children do, Maxine grew rapidly in those days, but unlike many in her age group, she carried a much more natural perception. Understanding came easier to her, and thus information was easily retained. She was reading early on, and writing became her emotional outlet just as early on. She was the girl who could fill a diary in less than a month with all of her senses, dreams, wishes, hopes, and desires, and her parents and servants only encouraged this hoping someday it would become cultured ambition if not literary talent.
Rather than be sent to an all-girls boarding academy, she was taught and tutored at home, the lessons catering to mathematics, economics, and social studies that would hopefully breed a gusty inheritor of the family firms. Due to this class of one, Maxine was given more information in a year than most children would receive in five, yet wherein some might have cracked under the pressures that were set upon her tiny shoulders, Maxine succeeded (not without aid but none the less). Etiquette was as much a lesson as her scholastic studies, and scores of formal dinner parties and dances taught her both what was expected of her and how to rise to meet it. Above all else, she was to be a lady: a vision of beauty, charm, intellect, and purity, and heaven fall before she fail!
Through her years, Maxine would meet many influential people of Britain, and in this way, her parents would see to her forming connections early in life. Her parents would not foresee their eventual downfall just then, but these seeds would be kindled into important plants later. What would influence the girl, however, were not these people. It would be those struggling to make a living, those that suffered daily, those abandoned and forgotten that made Maxine more aware of the world around her. She would be young when an elderly man ran up on her during a shopping outing and seized at her arm to beg for money, and though her mother was quick to shoo the man off, Maxine would be left with recognition of something deeper than her inner world had ever ventured before. After that, she found herself looking beyond her glamorous walls more and more frequently. She was interested—more so than her parents wished her to be.
They thought to distract her by “allowing” her to go to boarding school in Paris, and Maxine was flooded with full time peers, girls of her age and status who dreamed of plastic petty things. With her mind awakened and her eyes and ears aware, Maxine was more disgusted than pleased by her counterparts. Sure she played the game, made friends, and was even the head of a club or two. However, the young woman began to keep a delightful distance from them all. She told them none of her worries, inner fears, or conflicts. Instead, she started to play on them here and there, using the girls she schooled with for her own games of cat and mouse. Intentionally and unintentionally, Maxine did quite a bit of damage, but she was so careful to keep it from tracing back to her that few could fault her for anything.
During this time, Maxine would be made aware that she had a younger sibling coming, but the girl’s interest in the baby waxed and waned being away from home. She wouldn’t even depart from school initially when her mother went into labor and would only meet her baby brother Alister when the next break came, and he was already a few weeks old. He was cute as far as babies go, but she had other things to do aside from show consistent interest in him. Maybe when he got bigger, she’d show more affections, or so she reasoned.
Maxine would return to London fully for high school leaving behind plenty of “friends” who were “sorry to see her go”. Maxine kept in pleasant touch with a select few but focused more on her studies after. High school was a time to determine what University she wished to attend and what major she would choose. While it was clear by her parents’ standard what she should major in, Maxine had since grown independent of her parents and their wishes. She was a lady, a lady who would chart her own path. She studied a larger variety of courses, taking summer classes without hesitation in order to further herself. Ambition had indeed seeded in her and now seemed to be flowering.
She would be seventeen, in the middle of her rigorous study months before college exams when Maxine met Balthazar. She’d been out on a walk to clear her head when coming upon him. He was a ragged looking street boy, and while she’d seen quite a few like him, he was the first who held her interest. For whatever strange reason, she wanted him, and Maxine went with the impulse. Carefully, she coaxed him to talk and eventually come with her. At home, she hid him as best she could, starting to refuse servants’ entry into her own room saying that she did not wish to be disturbed while studying. She fed him, clothed him as best she could without being noticed, and slowly learned more about him. He was like a new toy, an interesting project, and it was fun to play with him.
It would prove to be impossible to hid a child in her room forever, however, and after a bit, they would be found out. Her parents had…mixed feelings, but in a series of talks, she managed to get them to let him stay- in his own room, of course. He would be her personal servant- or some other title they fashioned to make it socially acceptable. Maxine took the opportunity to teach Balt herself shaping his view the way she wanted. She withheld no information from him but was always one to put her own spin on ideals and thoughts, and Balt was rather receptive. Maxine enjoyed it.
Maxine chose a university across town and decided to live apart from home while going there. Balt was taken with her, however, and there, she put him into schooling nearby. During this time, she made still more alliances and was more careful with them than she had been before. Her grades remained high, and she sought as much information as possible. However, during her sophomore year of college, Maxine would learn some devastating news. Her parents and baby brother had been home late one night when three men forced their way inside and shot everyone in their home. Not even the servants survived- not that Maxine thought about them right then and there. The house was thrashed, and money was stolen, but the lives lost outweighed all of that. Maxine was devastated- and angry.
A family friend helped deal with all the repercussions, and the men would be caught and tried. However, Maxine did not let go. Her anger became a weapon that might never have been forged without that incident. She didn’t care about whatever situation they may have been in. There was no excuse. She wanted them dead. Maxine didn’t take action right away, however. The young woman focused on schooling and finishing. However, during her academic years, she began to forge alliances with more and more people. She took up more and more street children, more ‘worthless’ people and made them her weapons. Under their desperation, they gathered readily under her, and like Balt before them, she molded them to her own desires. She treated them, made her own, and in this strange way, Maxine began to create the vigilante group that would become the Grey Knights.
In under two years, Maxine would graduate with a degree in Business and a minor in Business law. Going straight into her Masters, Maxine started becoming a stronger influence in the banking firms left to her with a forceful hand using resourceful and ingenious (and maybe underhanded) tactics to make more money than ever before. This money went strictly to funding her growing number of “children” whom she educated and molded each to her own desire and design. They were not useful to her stupid, after all, and Maxine knew that better than anyone.
Upon completing her Master’s in Business law, Maxine focused on expanding her alliances and influences. She expanded the banking firm and filled many new banks with her own ‘children’ as time went on. Spilling a few of them into selective influential fields, Maxine carefully used every step to get closer to those killers. It had been years, yet she had not forgotten nor forgiven. Maxine would be twenty-six when they were finally ‘dealt with accordingly’, and liberated, Maxine would free for the first time since it had occurred. She had ‘won’ and was ‘in control’. She had become the law in her own eyes, and Maxine liked it.
She bolstered herself and her power with every passing year. The Grey Knights as she called her precious subjects / children were her best weapon, but that didn’t mean she wished to be defenseless without them. As the ‘true end of law’ she had to be just as strong as them if not stronger. That was Maxine’s belief anyways. She made herself physically stronger and never ceased to expand her knowledge base of whatever managed to catch her interest. She went on this way for years, never ceasing to gather up new people to mold and train. They were hers as much as she was theirs, and Maxine never let any of them forget it either.
Maxine was well into her thirties when she started traveling more and more. Economic expansion passed Europe and into the States was a difficult process, and she desired to be there rather than a world away. Always, Maxine left the home front in the care of Balthazar whom she trusted more than anyone else to keep things running. However, she never ceased to keep in contact, of course. Eventually, banks would slowly pop up and down the eastern coast. Maxine would be forced to start dying her straggling grey stress hairs, but other than that, everything was simply splendid, yes.
Returning home for a bit, Maxine considered winding down a bit but inevitably did not. Work always called, and she rose to the challenge. Sometimes her knights would get into trouble, and like a steward she got them out of it. They would always be hers, and their doings were always extensions of her own doing anyways. When she decided to return to America once again, Maxine decided to take Balthazar along this time, setting more trusted people in chosen positions. She preferred him by her side to anything else, anyways. Taking also a chosen group with her, she started to Georgetown where the newest establishment would be built. She would be caught up, however, in the event that transpired after.
Approached by a god, Maxine was asked what her desire would be, and impulsively, she wished more of her ‘children’ were with her. She mentally swears to this day it was the anxiety of the moment overtaking her, but sure enough, more arrivals had appeared after. Her insignia was bestowed giving her a power she very much liked, and in the time that she has been in the toybox, Maxine has focused on securing new alliances. Why not make do with what they have, after all?
Insignia Level 2
Maxine's insignia takes the form of a tattoo of crossed sabers on her lower back. Telepathy – Level 1 – Maxine’s ability allows her to hear the thoughts of others by direct contact with the skin. By touching another person, she can hear their thoughts at the surface level. Whatever they may be thinking at any given moment will be what she hears in her own head as though they were saying it out loud. Due to the nature of people’s stream of consciousness, these thoughts are as random as the person happens to be, and Maxine has no way to dig deeper than that. People are not aware of her reading their thoughts either. This power also takes a mental will for it to activate, so just random bumping into people will not cause it to occur. It may be used for up to fifteen minutes upon being activated, and she can use this up to five times a day not in succession.
Level 2 – At level two, Maxine can cause her power to breach the touch requirement. She is then capable of hearing the thoughts of others in a limited range of herself (within fifteen feet). However the recourse comes in that she is unable to direct her focus to one singular individual. Should she be in a crowd, Maxine would hear all surface thoughts within her range limit, and it can easily become a metal and emotional overload. She can do this for a duration of fifteen minutes but tends to avoid using the full time limit due to the strain. Recourse comes in the form of emotional and mental exhaustion as well as physical exhaustion from using the power.
Her Passive takes the form of a full sized female lion. At 280lbs and at a shoulder height of just under four feet, Aracelli is a large and proud creature. Honestly, however, she’s more of a large housecat than anything, very often seen at Maxine’s feet.
Extra
Maxine can speak French from her years in boarding school.
Despite the stereotype, she is very knowledgeable when it comes to tea(s) and is an avid drinker. She prefers it over coffee any day of the week.
She is not a stranger to infatuation and anything that entails. However, most of those she has ‘loved’ have mysteriously wound up dead. Maxine refuses to comment on this.
