Nate may seem a bit daunting at first but this is merely a façade he puts in place to keep others from getting too close. Ever since he lost his family and his wife it has been harder for him to let others in lest he risk that same pain again. Nate is not heartless however and helps people in need whenever he has the ability and time to. He doesn’t like seeing another person upset and though he may not go out of his way to cheer them up; Nate will often give them something simple he happens to have on hand and perhaps find a later time to talk to them. Above all else, he truly does want to defend those he loves from harm and harbors a deep fear that if he should get close to someone that he won’t be strong enough to protect them. Occasionally, Nate will even see a patient free of charge but this is on a per person basis. Truth is, Nate sees little use for money and even though his job pays well he often gives the majority of it away.
When he’s not at work, Nate can be found playing his violin, piano, or any of the numerous other instruments he has collected. He isn’t shy about his love for music but neither does he play any of his original pieces around other people, insisting that they are flawed in some way. This is not to say that Nate refuses to play in front of others at all, just as long as it’s something already well known unless persuaded otherwise. Oftentimes he will stay up late at night playing one of his instruments simply because he enjoys the sound of it and it gives him a certain peace that doesn’t come very often after the attack.
Nate loves to try new things and see new places and is actually very well-travelled for someone his age, never tiring of seeing the many wonders nature has to offer. Other than his love of nature, Nate enjoys trying new things and will never turn down an opportunity to do so. He enjoys the freedom to do things his way without having to constantly worry about rules and regulations. As a result of being stuck in the toy box, Nate tends to be more irritable than usual and has taken to running or playing sports so that he has something to do since he’s stuck in Georgia.
Though Nate may be harsh at times it is exceedingly hard to get him truly angry. He has a very long fuse and is very patient especially considering he sometimes loses track of time or rather, doesn’t really care about it. Nate can be rather lazy at times, wanting to do nothing but just sit and watch the clouds go by and wish the day was over. However even Nate’s patience will wear thin if pushed too far, especially he sees someone consistently repeats the same mistakes over and over again with little to no improvement. Nate cannot stand watching people fail and makes a point to help them succeed however possible if given the opportunity. The only thing that seems to make Nate angry without fail is if anyone scares, endangers, or hurts anybody or anything that he holds dear to him.
History Nate’s life started simple enough, born to loving parents he always knew that they would be there for him. Even though they weren’t rich, Nate had everything he could possibly want because he had his parents. One day they were driving to a festival for Nate’s birthday when a passing truck going way too fast hit them and toppled their car into a ravine. Stephen’s neck was broken by the fall and was killed instantly while Gabriela’s only thought was to protect her son. As a result she suffered severe head trauma and other injuries while Nate remained all but unscathed save for a broken wrist. Gabriela passed away due to complications after a few days in the hospital making Nate an orphan. Devastated and still reeling from loss, Nate withdrew into himself even as sympathetic doctors came and went. As soon as he was well enough, Nate was taken to the local orphanage where he would meet the people who would take care of him and the other kids.
The years passed slowly in the orphanage as Nate watched other kids become adopted but no matter what they always seemed to overlook him. This suited him just fine; nobody could ever replace his parents and that was exactly what it felt like they were trying to do. In fact, Nate kept to himself and did everything he could to avoid being adopted as bitterness against the one who took his parents away wormed its way into his heart. Nobody should have died, his parents should still be here but that guy was still free while Nate was trapped in this miserable place. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t fair and to make matters worse it seemed like nobody cared anymore. As Nate grew, more of the kids began to mistreat him, naming him the forgotten but Nate didn’t care. Truth be told, in some ways they were right, he had been forgotten, stuck in the orphanage like he was some lost puppy that needed a home. However, just because he was forgotten didn’t mean that the younger kids deserved to be tormented. After a while, he started to look after some of the younger kids, becoming their protector from any would be bullies. Looking after the kids helped him to slowly come out of his cocoon of bitterness that he’d been enveloped in for so long. The other kids gave him a reason to care, to live for something other than himself and whether they knew it or not, they had saved his life.
School was uneventful for the most part, Nate would look out for his ‘family’ as he had come to know them by this time. They looked up to him and in turn, Nate did his best to be a good role model and kept his not so angelic activities a secret. He found out early on that fire was really quite beautiful and took to setting small fires here. Nate was careful to make sure that they were never very damaging except to the trash can or box he had set them in. When his family were back at the orphanage, Nate took to hanging out with his friends from school and started to smoke. It was something he could do without the kids hanging around him all the time and it helped him to deal with stress in his own way. It wasn’t that school was horrible or anything but it was easier to fall in with the wrong crowd that didn’t care about his pyromania than try to explain the small fires that were set around the school. Besides, as long as his grades were decent his caretakers at the orphanage didn’t care what he did when he was away.
By the time high school rolled around, Nate was considered one of the ‘cool kids’ that the girls fawned over. Nate however didn’t care about girls and hardly gave them the time of day except to toy with a few that were notorious for being easy. That was until he met Clarissa who was the first girl who spurned his advances which made him want to pursue her all the more. It was a game to him, to see how long it would take him to win her like all the other girls. Nate quickly found out however that Clarissa wasn’t like most other girls and before he knew it, he had fallen head over heels in love with her. He stopped smoking and setting fires around the school quite as often though he still carried a lighter with him wherever he went. Not only that but Clarissa changed him and helped him get his grades up enough to get into a decent college. He would ask her to marry him a few months before their graduation and made plans to go to the same college shortly after getting married. Both had big dreams for their future, Clarissa to be an artist while Nate aimed to be a child and adolescent psychiatrist. He missed the kids he had left back at the orphanage certainly but they talked often enough when they were able so it was almost the same.
Not long after both graduated with their Associates degree, Clarissa had found that she was pregnant. At first, Nate was shocked and didn’t know what to do, he had lost his parents at a young age and now he was expected to be a father when he didn’t know the first thing about them. Still, he couldn’t help but be happy about the news even if he was scared about messing up to say the least of things. Clarissa would get a job as an illustrator while Nate managed to find a job at a grocery store, it wasn’t much but it paid the bills and made it so they were able to get a small apartment just off campus. Nate would still be able to attend college so he could work towards his degree in psychiatry and they would be alright, of that he was sure of. A perfectly healthy baby boy would be born a year later and would be named Lucian. Life was hard certainly and Nate sometimes struggled to make ends meet but they managed even if they didn’t always have everything they wanted.
With Nate still going to college and with a new baby to look after, it took longer for him to get his degree than he had initially anticipated. It was difficult to balance school, work, and his family life but it was worth it in the end since it allowed him to get a better paying job and an actual house. With as energetic as Lucian was it was becoming harder to tell the young boy to be quiet lest their neighbors complain about the noise. A house would solve that problem and hopefully allow them some privacy that apartments didn’t allow. At first, life was great and Nate was able to get a job that allowed him to not have to worry about finances. This combined with the income that Clarissa received from her commissions gave them more than enough to live comfortably and be able to afford things that had been little more than a dream before.
Life seemed to be perfect when one day, Nate came home to find an empty house which was odd considering that Clarissa could easily work from home. They should have been back a while ago unless Lucy had gone shopping with her that was. Thinking nothing was amiss, Nate simply texted her asking when she would be home only to get a phone call moments later. As it turned out, someone had kidnapped his wife and son and were now asking for a ransom for both of them to be returned safely. Nate couldn’t believe this was happening and immediately went to the police to ask for help but they insisted that he wait to be contacted again. The next contact ended up being a phone call and a package with his wife’s finger inside with a note attached threatening to do worse if the cops were included. Distraught, Nate did as was requested of him and got the money but instead of giving him his family back, they increased the ransom because he had gone to the police.
Unbeknownst to Nate, Lucian had already escaped the kidnappers thanks to Clarissa’s efforts while the kidnappers were distracted. However, with the additional threat to his family’s lives, Nate pleaded for more time if only he could have proof that they were alive. This however was denied to him and even less time was given to him to get the rest of the money. Frantic, Nate scrambled to get every last penny the convicts had requested of him. However, he came up with it a little too late and was told that his wife would be found in an abandoned warehouse south of his location. What he would find when he got there was not Lucian and Clarissa alive and well as he expected but instead what appeared to be hundreds of barrels, one marked with a large red X. Without thinking, Nate immediately opened the barrel but what was inside was not his wife, alive and well as he had expected but the corpse of what had once been his first love. Seeing what had become of his beloved wife, Nate lost it and the next thing he knew he was escaping the flames of a burning building carrying the body of his wife.
Shortly after that, Nate would be contacted by the police, informing him that his son was alive and well. Relieved, Nate drove as fast as he could to the station where he would find his son and hold him as tight as he could. From that time on, he promised Lucian that he would never let him go again and would keep him safe. After that he would tell the police what was in his car and took his son back home after answering any questions they had of him. Thereafter, Nate would do his best to keep Lucian safe and took a few weeks off thereafter in order to deal with funeral arrangements and deal with the stress of what had just happened. The funeral was an ordeal in and of itself since Lucian seemed bound and determined to make it as difficult as he could when the day finally came. Nate understood that it was his way of coping and tried to be patient with him but there was only so much he could do to calm Lucian when he just wanted to lash out at anything and everything.
They would move to Georgia to not even a year later mostly because Nate could no longer handle the reminders of Clarissa everywhere they looked. Nate’s work was able to transfer him and he would continue his work as a psychiatrist all the while keeping Lucian close by. It had been hard to get him to return to school after all that had happened, but eventually the boy had agreed to return even if Nate had mixed feelings about it. Life started to get better after that, Lucian seemed to mellow out and gained new friends much to Nate’s relief. He was understandably overprotective of Lucian after what had happened and there were times where Nate had to be talked out of hurting someone who had dared to insult or worse, injure, his son.
After a while, Nate seemed to relax and stopped being as protective over Lucian as he used to be and even tried dating a few times with mixed results. Nate was still very much in love with Clarissa and though he had helped Lucian moved past his feelings, Nate had never truly dealt with his own and perhaps never would. He had always had to be the strong one after all and this made it impossible to face the reality of his wife’s death. In his mind, Nate was still married and though he played around the dating scene, he never truly opened himself to others even when the romance was there, it was clear that Nate’s heart wasn’t in it.
As time went on, Nate fell into a routine and though he would grow restless from time to time and would take Lucian on spur of the moment trips just for a change of scenery. Though he would never admit it, Lucian had become his entire world since his wife’s passing and everything else paled in comparison. Lucian kept him grounded when everything else had seemed to spiral out of control, it gave him a reason to live and be strong when the world was crumbling around him. Nate would be the best father Lucian could ask for and would go to all his school events even if it meant cancelling a few appointments here and there. Nothing was more important than his son and he would bite the head off of anyone who told him otherwise.
When the event happen, Nate was skeptical at best. If there were so called gods, what the hell had they been doing when his wife was in danger and why were they showing their faces now of all times. Nevertheless, when asked about a wish, Nate didn’t bat an eye before asking for the power to protect his son and anyone else that was precious to him. His wish would be granted and he would be given powers and an insignia that has seemed to remind him of his old pyromania. Now more often than not he can be seen playing with his power when he’s off or just because he wants to see something burn.
Insignia Level 1
On the back of his right hand, Nate has a red phoenix rising from the ashes that glows white whenever he uses his power. In order to activate it, he has to brush the back of his hand before it will work and he usually keeps white gloves on in order to keep from activating it accidentally.
Pyrokinesis – Level 1 – Nate is able to manipulate fire at will but it is to be noted that he cannot create fire. He is only able to shape flame that is readily available and even then it depends on how big the flame is in regards to how much damage he is able to cause. Nate is able to create small darts from flame of a lighter for example or write his name with it. In order to create fireballs for example, he would need access to a bigger flame such as a small campfire. It takes very little energy to manipulate small flames but should he try and manipulate large fires it takes more energy and he is only able to use his power consecutively for twenty minutes at a time before he has to rest.
Passive – Calcifer is the name of a fire spirit that seems intent on making things difficult for Nate. He is stubborn, loud, and says anything that is on his mind, no matter how vulgar, at all times. Fortunately, Calcifer doesn’t seem to be around very often except when he’s needed or if Nate happens to use his power since the fire spirit seems to enjoy eating flames, heat, or really anything he can get his hands on.
Extra
Likes:- Playing the piano/violin- Playing instruments has always been a way to help him relax. Now is no exception and Nate finds that sometimes it helps him relax after a long day. Sometimes Nate composes his own music but most of the time he doesn’t play for an audience unless requested and even then with quite a bit of reluctance.
- Card/Board games- Games of strategy and the like are one of Nate’s favorite past times, chess being among one of his favorite games. Though he doesn’t consider himself as skilled as he would like at the game, he is actually quite good at it. Games that make one think are a nice way to pass the time after all.
- Birds-Nate loves watching birds soar through the air and often finds himself wishing he could join them. Unfortunately it is impossible for him to sprout wings and glide through the air so he must content himself with watching them. He loves listening to the songs the different variety of birds make and can even name the species of bird just by their song alone. Though not an avid bird watcher, it is something else that Nate has found is calming and has since started watching them more often.
- Reading- Priding himself on being rather well read, Nate has read just about every genre of book there is though he tends to prefer more intellectual books. On rainy days especially, when he’s not playing one of his instruments, he can be found with a book in his hand along with his ever present cat ‘reading’ along with him. Given the chance, Nate loves discussing what books he has read or what other people suggest reading; far be it for Nate to pass up a good book, avid reader that he is.
- Freedom- Nate has a bit of what can be deemed as wanderlust. He loves to travel a variety of places and considering his job does in fact demand that of him at times, he couldn’t be happier. True, he does have to work once he arrives at the destination but Nate never passes up an opportunity to see more of the world. Nate honestly can’t stand being in one place for too long but now that he’s stuck in the toy box he’s taken to running every day which seems to help but it is not unheard of to see him suddenly disappear to the island for a few days without a word.
Dislikes:
- Bullies- Having been bullied as a young boy, Nate abhors those who would seek to hurt others simply because they appear weaker. He won’t just sit by and watch while someone else is intentionally hurting another and is prone to getting himself in trouble by butting when he sees such situations. There is no better way than to get Nate angry than to hurt someone in any way just because they appear weaker.
- Dogs- Nate has never been much of a dog person and has little patience for them. Yes, dogs are cute, he’ll give them that much but he prefers the free spirit that cats exhibit rather than the dependent, and almost needy attitude dogs give out.
- Lying- Nate despises lying in any form. This is especially true because his profession requires him to know the truth about the other person and as such he is quite skilled at picking out lies. It’s a waste of his time if someone should choose to lie to him anyway and Nate loathes deceit with a passion.
- Disrespect- He will not tolerate disrespect towards himself or other figures of authority. It is very rare that Nate will treat others with disrespect unless the other party has done something to anger him. All courtesies that would have been granted are tossed out the window at that point and they may or may not find an angry pyromaniac staring them down.
- Ignorance- There is no excuse for not knowing what common sense is though clearly humanity has since deserted its use. Nate has little patience for people who would go to the trouble to purposely act like a nitwit or won’t take the time to try and understand something so simple as the instructions written right in front of them. People who do not seek their own answers and ask it of others, as if expecting everyone to be walking encyclopedias, are just lazy and one of Nate’s biggest pet peeves to say the least.
- Loud Noises- Nate’s ears weren’t already sensitive enough due to his musical training which makes him rather jumpy when around extremely loud sounds and is prone to snapping at others to stop being so loud.
Habits:- Smirking- Usually a neon sign that Nate is about to use sarcasm or that he is amused. He rarely ever smiles but smirking is just easier for him for whatever reason.
- Sarcasm- Snark knight is pretty much what Nate is, enough said.
- Smoking- A habit he picked up as a teenager to help curb his pyromania. Nate always has a lighter on him and usually has at least one pack of cigarettes on him. If he’s not working, it is common to see him smoking a cigarette or even the rare cigar.
- Humming- Sometimes Nate will get a song in mind to perhaps play on the violin later and will hum the tune while he is working or during whatever he might be doing at the time.
