History Having been doctors for generations, the Alabaster family was known for their rigorous intellect and unscrupulous dispositions. Their motto has always been ‘anything to preserve life’, but under this seemingly pure hearted creed, they did reproachful and ethically challenging things. Their open legal matters were always at the forefront of scientific debates, but it was what they did under the table that made others warier. There was a rumor they were corpse mongers and body traders, and while no proof was ever found, they didn’t come out and deny anything, and the rumors continued that way.
Jaden Alabaster was born into the main Alabaster line to the son of the head of their clan, and his life was decided and planned out for him before he even began speaking. He would become a high ranking doctor and specialize in surgery. From there, he would raise a family; at the time, his parents were considering one of many prospective children already as well. Other plans were made but not spoken as fervently as these two. To say the least, they had the biggest impact on him, anyways. For one thing, it robbed him of his childhood. The young boy would hear time and time again that he would be a doctor, no exceptions, and even as a tiny child, he was rigorously tested in medical terminology and general scientific concepts. He was placed in an accelerated elementary school, and he had afternoon tutors at his heels until he went to bed. He was allowed socialization with his peers, but it had to be for specific reasons such as school projects and social gatherings deemed useful for his status. Everything was chosen for him, and Jade never knew any better.
Jade was five when his younger brother, Blake, was born. Their relationship was virtually nonexistent in early years what with Jade being proctored everywhere and the baby just as well. It was the same for when his younger sister Amber was born two years later. Each child had an already designated destiny, and the concept of a close-knit family was only applicable to the Alabasters as a whole. Each year, there was a large family reunion, and it was expected everyone be civil and act in a certain accepted manner. These mannerisms were ingrained in Jade as well, and he didn’t argue them at all by the time he was ten years old. Unlike some children who might have fought for a sense of individuality, Jade had fallen into the mold of a ‘perfect child’ in the eyes of his parents and been shaped accordingly. In effect, they’d brainwashed him very nicely.
Life went on like that for years. He was his teacher’s favorite and his peers’ greatest rival. From relentless amounts of studying and extra tutoring, he was always ahead of everyone even in sports matters. He was expected to get either a golfing scholarship or a baseball one for college, and thus his parents put him through lessons after lessons. He excelled better in golf, and by the time he was to start middle school, it had tapered down to just golf lessons. Meanwhile, his clubs were greatly monitored. He was always in one science club or another and also the eventual president of the academic honor society in middle school.
In high school, it was almost the same- the key word being almost. What his parents didn’t expect was Jade would start noticing girls, and it took several harsh threats among other things to turn him back to his studies. It was only during this time that he started to realize how tight and demanding his parents were. Even among other academy student parents, his were by far more intense and demanding. While he could never think to betray them, it began to start worrying him. Even as he started working on college applications in Junior year, he started thinking more and more independently. Nothing might have come of it, however, if the events that transpired after hadn’t happened.
Due to their extraneous and estranged relationship, Jade never really knew Blake nor Amber. Years later, he would look back and wonder why he had never managed to invest even a little time to them, but it doesn’t matter now. Jade was eighteen when his thirteen year old brother brought a gun home and shot up the house. Jade would never know what he was thinking; he would never be able to ask. All he has now is the memory of blood and screaming. He remembered his father standing up possibly attempting to talk down his brother only to be shot in the face and then the chest as he fell back. He remembered his mother’s scream before the gun was turned on her as well. Jade recanted at least one shot. He remembered his sister running down the stairs and the way in which their brother whipped around and shot her as well. He remembered the seconds of maddening quiet that came thereafter as his brother slowly turned back and aimed the gun at him as well. He remembered being frozen in his chair staring down the barrel of the gun and the sickening sound of a shot going off— and then a second a minute or so later.
Jade woke up in the hospital. Doctors buzzed to ask him standard procedure questions and gave him time to ask questions as well. He’d been shot in the chest cavity and had nearly died, but due to both being shot last and being shot in a place that didn’t bleed out as fast as the others, he’d managed to survive. When he asked what happened to his brother, it was explained the boy had turned the gun on himself shortly after shooting him and shot himself. He too survived, however, and was already conscious by the time Jade had come to. When they asked what could have prompted Blake to do it, Jade didn’t have an answer. He didn’t know him— at all. He didn’t understand him, didn’t connect with him. Blake was a stranger, and now Jade was terrified of him.
It would only be learned later that Blake had also killed their grandfather and battered their grandmother into a hyper paranoid state. Apparently he’d gone home after that, and it was she who’d called the police. The ambulance didn’t have to go far thereafter to find the extended mess. Blake would eventually be charge, but it seemed he tested legally insane, and instead of being put in prison, he was put in an asylum. Jade, meanwhile, was put up with his aunt, uncle, and cousins. He was sent to a therapist almost seven days a week, and eventually with little progress found, they decided to medicate him. It worked somewhat, and after about two months, he was finally back in school finishing up his senior year.
Despite some minor protest, he eventually went to college as a premed major. He avoided making any connections with anyone and was very level headed, graduating a semester early before applying for med school. A combination of high grades and high goals made it easy to accept him. In four years, he graduated. It seemed that even with his emotions ruined, his mind was not altogether destroyed. This was what he was meant to do, after all. That was what his parents had wanted, and it was all he ever knew. He did well, very well. Right out of med school, he went back to specialize in surgery, and once more he focused and did well. Once graduated yet again, he became a fully-fledged surgeon with an incredibly stable income. He paid off student loans in a very short period of time by living without excessive luxury.
Years passed, and he did everything he knew his parents had wanted— aside from having a family. It nagged at him, consuming him, and he became uncontrollably spontaneous and clingy to anyone showed interest. It made for horrible connections, and he went through several toxic relationships. He fathered several children, but none of their mothers wished to marry him, and when he was honest with himself, he didn’t really want to marry them either. He just put them on his budget, paid child support, and made sure his kids were comfortable with the situation as best he could. Sometimes he attempted to be a father to them, but it never really worked out in one way or another, and eventually he gave up trying.
After years of working in various hospitals, Jade would learn his grandmother was on her last leg, and robotically, he came to visit. She apologized profusely to him for all of their family’s trashy exploits among other things and begged him to be himself before anyone else. He suffered a terrible mental break down after she passed away and went through several lesser breakdowns thereafter. It was painful to realize he still didn’t know he was despite his age and knowledge. He still couldn’t understand himself or his own desires— or if he even had his own desires. He had never lived for himself, and the weight of this truth shattered him to pieces more than once. He took leave from work for a while and did a lot of self-searching. Eventually, he would leave the hospital scene altogether, take a lower paying but quieter job as the medical examiner, and it was there that he was able to reconstruct himself.
Sometime into his new profession, Jade started visiting his brother at the asylum. He was afraid at first, but slowly with each passing visit he came to understand and learn more about his brother. Blake was indeed disturbed. When heavily medicated, he was a bit better, but his psychosis was otherwise terrible. It sickened Jade that a family of doctors hadn’t noticed this before, hadn’t been able to prevent it before, but one day, in a state of clarity, Blake confided that they had experimented on him. Jade was stunned. Their family had experimented on his brother? Of course Blake had no proof, and Jade could never be sure he was actually truthful let alone sane in his argument, but with the way he reflected upon his family now a days, Jade couldn’t help believing.
Jade had no proof, however, but after some hesitation, he contracted a private detective to gather information on the matter. The private detective dug up some uncomfortable information, and Jade just as uncomfortably reported it to the police. He hadn’t intended to fundamentally destroy his family in this way, but the corruption in the various branches could not be left covered as it was. In the end, there were quite a number of arrests made, and Jade was forced to testify in order to put numerous family members away. Sometimes he wonders if he was doing the right thing in doing so, but in the end, he held his resolve. Even with death threats from his own family among other things, Jade managed to hold it together for the sake of justice for his brother. It was an ironic twist of fate, one could say.
He continued to work as the medical examiner and would eventually get an assistant despite his disdain for having underlings in any form or fashion. When the event occurred, he took it in surprising stride. His wish was simple: to cure his brother of the mental illness that was plaguing him. He also received an insignia and power thereafter. Since then, he’s been working but growing increasingly irritated that there have been bodiless crime scenes. What is he supposed to do? Since then, he’s been generalizing and acting as many officer’s general practitioner in simple check-up settings. He’s also been working on reorganizing all the medical files to fit his personal taste.
Insignia Level 1
Jade’s insignia is in his eyes. Once brown, the irises are now a striking red. Shutting his eyes for a few seconds before opening them and focusing on his target allows Jade to activate his power.
Power sensing – level 1 – Jade is capable of detecting the gifts of others. It is a simple power that requires him to view a person in order for it to work. Above their heads, he can then see the name of their power and discern what its properties are. He can do this up to five times a day for a minute or two intervals.
The passive takes the form of a tiny owl that sometimes rests on his shoulder. He’s since named it Archimedes.
Extra
He’s incredibly nearsighted. If you look through his glasses, you’ll swear it’ sa magnifying glass in disguise.
He has three children ages 10-16.
