There is very little that fazes Valerie. She does not get stressed easily and has a quiet sort of strength about her. Even in the face of danger, Valerie does not panic or get frightened easily and instead works to find a way out of the situation rather than choosing to worry over trivial things. Valerie isn’t swayed by emotions and is logical first and foremost. Her reasoning may seem cold but if it does not make sense, nine times out of ten Valerie will not listen to it. Decisions that are based entirely on emotions confuse Valerie to no end because she has locked her emotions away for years and has almost forgotten what it is to feel. Once Valerie sets her mind to something, she will be hard pressed to change her mind. She always sees a task through no matter how difficult it may seem. If she started it, she’s going to finish it, that’s all there is to it.
Valerie likes to stay two steps ahead of the game and is able to plan a strategy just by looking at her surroundings. She is very observant and very little escapes her notice. Just by walking into a room, Valerie is able to pinpoint where the best escape routes would be or is the best way to incapacitate her opponent. Though her cold exterior may be hard to crack, Valerie is extremely loyal to her allies. Come hell or high water, once anyone manages to earn her loyalty, she will stay by them no matter what. After losing her entire family when she was young, Valerie is determined that nobody should have to suffer like she did. As such, she does whatever it takes to ensure that those around her stay safe even if it means putting her own life on the line.
Valerie just cannot relate to others very well and things such as tears or excitement do not faze her. Anger or sadness are seen as useless emotions and love is unexplainable and thereby a weakness that allows other people to use someone against you. Rather than trying to understand why someone is upset, Valerie will more often than not just walk on by so she doesn’t have to deal with it. Valerie is all about business and prefers to stay by herself than be out in public. She doesn’t like parties because she never knows what to say or what the reason is for attending such ridiculous social events. Valerie can be rather bull-headed at times and won’t change her ways no matter what the argument may be. Though it may be odd and illogical, Valerie is rather set in her ways and doesn’t like change to say the least. Anything new is met with immediate cynicism and it takes a lot of convincing to get Valerie to change her mind should she decide she doesn’t like something or someone.
Rather than put anyone in harm’s way, Valerie prefers to work alone. With more teammates or allies there is a chance that they might get in her way. In her opinion it is better to work alone where there is no risk of harming another than to take unnecessary risks. That way she does not run the risk of losing anyone else. Valerie is not sorry or apologetic for anything she says or does. She is very blunt and will tell it like it is without any thought to the person’s thoughts or feelings. Her actions are generally well thought out and part of a larger strategy. Valerie does everything for a reason and doesn’t care if anyone is offended because of it. True, she may make mistakes but it is rare to hear an apology at any point in time. When faced with those who are carefree or seem to be given everything on a silver platter, she is prone to being harsher than usual. She doesn’t care to be around those who have been given everything and still complain about their life. In Valerie’s eyes, they’re fools and won’t tolerate their presence for more than a few minutes.
History
Born in California to an average family, Valerie had a happy life and loving parents. They might not have had everything they wanted, but with hard work they had what they needed to make ends meet and live comfortably. Valerie made friends easily at school and was an outgoing, happy child that enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved art class. When Valerie just started second grade, she got another sister, Lily whom she adored and tried to do everything with her.
Everything changed on the night of Valerie’s ninth birthday when her house was invaded. Valerie heard the noise and hid in a hidey hole in her closet when the people came upstairs and did something to her parents. She could hear them screaming and then Lily, dear sweet Lily who must’ve been with her parents started crying and was silenced. Valerie wanted to go to them, to try and protect them, but fear had frozen her. She didn’t move, didn’t so much as breathe a word through her tears until the screams stopped and the footsteps approached her door, then faded entirely and walked away.
Thinking she was safe, Valerie ran to her parents’ room to find their broken, bloody bodies along with Lily’s still form laying there and screamed. Footsteps pounded on the stairs as the man that had done this to her parents was alerted and came back to find Valerie trying to wake her parents and sister up. He couldn’t have any witnesses be able to identify him and though Valerie tried to run and escape him, he had her cornered. The next thing Valerie was aware of was pain, searing pain as the man cut her before a shout alerted him to another presence. A shot rang out and the man fell on top of her, cutting her eye in the process with his still raised knife. Valerie screamed and tried to shove the dead weight off of her but she was too weak. More footsteps pounded up the stairs after that and then someone came to take the man off her.
What happened next, Valerie wasn’t aware of as she fell unconscious shortly after someone picked her up. The next thing that she knew, Valerie was in a hospital with a patch over her eye. At first, she thought that everything had been a dream, that it hadn’t really happened but the memories were all too real. Her parents…everyone was dead. Rather than face the fear and terror that came with what had happened the night before, Valerie cut off her emotions and locked them away somewhere deep in her mind. It was easier not to feel then to recall everything she went through that night. The memories too were locked away and though she was asked what happened, all Valerie could do was say that she didn’t remember. She was called the lucky one, the miracle child…ridiculous names when the murderer had permanently blinded her in her left eye. The scar was there for everyone to see after all, along with the other scars he had given her, each as ugly as the next. Lucky indeed…
Valerie was placed in a foster home as soon as she was well enough to be released but instead of make friends with the other kids, she just kept to herself and locked herself away. They didn’t understand, nobody could and she was tired of their pitying looks every time she walked in the room. As time passed, Valerie continued to grow more distant from everyone else until she eventually forgot what it meant to be part of a family. Even the good memories of her past were fading now and with it, any trace of the person Valerie used to be.
Her foster parents tried to include her in what they did but Valerie didn’t care anymore and began to be drawn towards the more logical aspect of things. They made sense to her where things such as feelings or the desire to be close to someone, did not. Even her old friends eventually stopped hanging around her because she wasn’t ‘fun’ anymore. Without any ties to her past, Valerie stopped trying to spend time with anybody outside of school or ‘family’ events that she was dragged to and focused more on school, especially math and science. Things that could be explained made sense to her whereas the arts seemed illogical aside from actual art class. She could never understand why the instructor insisted that people were ‘inspired’ by something but it was easy to figure out how to paint and draw, almost like a mathematical formula except with graphite, watercolors, and oils. It turned out that Valerie had a natural gift for such things and even enjoyed them to some extent and excelled in the class.
Art however, though a way to pass the time, was not a valid way to make a living, or at least in Valerie’s mind. Laws made sense to her, upholding them like the policemen did was logical even if the government itself was flawed. Valerie began to study more in class and succeeded at most everything she strove to accomplish. The teachers called her gifted and she was even advanced a couple of grades early on in order to challenge her since she often seemed bored in class. Valerie would go on to graduate high school at the age of 16 and went straight into college to become a lawyer. It was an ambitious goal certainly but she was determined to reach her goal no matter how long it took. If Valerie was going to have a career, what better to choose then a lawyer; laws, rules, and order were all logical things and she could make sense out of them.
College was certainly harder than her other classes and made especially difficult since she had to work her way through college. Money was never easy to come by however and thus she turned to various scholarships and grants on top of whatever odd jobs she could get. Valerie also found that people were willing to buy some of her paintings that she did in what little spare time she had. The money she got from the sales on top of her odd jobs helped offset the cost of going to school. It was grueling work to keep on top of everything but she was able to graduate college and get accepted into one of the top law schools in the country located in Georgia.
Law school was another thing entirely however and Valerie found that she needed to work more to offset the cost that wasn’t covered by scholarships and grants. Her various odd jobs just weren’t covering the difference and had to resort to student loans She didn’t necessarily have enough to eat all the time but then again Valerie had a tendency to forget to eat, or sleep for that matter when she was focused on a task. It was a bad habit but law school was difficult and the all-nighters Valerie had pulled were a small price to pay in order to reach her goal. Valerie was logic oriented and to her it was logical to study more frequently if it meant she could become a lawyer that much sooner. The laws, rules and regulations she was learning about made sense to her and she had come to the conclusion that nobody should be given special treatment on account of how they lived; they had broken the law and that was the end of it.
It took Valerie a little longer to graduate law school, with a degree specializing in Criminal Law, Felonies, and Homicides, than college but she did end up passing the bar exam in the end. Something happened during her first case however and the criminal walked free. Shortly after the client that she had worked closely with for months in order to build a case against the perpetrator was killed. Valerie couldn’t simply wait around and do nothing about what had happened and took matters into her own hands. She found and captured the person who had walked away in the trial and was able to extract a confession from him. The confession would be delivered to the proper authorities but the body of the man would never be found. After several more similar trials, Valerie repeated the same unusual tactics with each person. Confessions would be extracted but the people themselves would never be seen again. Questions began to arise as to what happened to the guilty people but some thought it was a good thing they had disappeared. Others were sympathetic to the culprits of the crime and suggested looking for them but each time came up empty.
Valerie would eventually quit her job at the firm and become a paralegal. She wasn’t in the spotlight anymore but would be able to remain informed about the criminal cases where the guilty party walked away. She was there to ensure that the guilty paid regardless of what the verdict might have determined. This was how she met up with Boba Fett’s Fugitive Recover Service, it turned out they had just captured one of her intended targets. It was troublesome to say the least of things but as it turned out there were other ways of taking justice into her own hands. She began to keep an eye on the group shortly after that and even helped them get out of trouble with the law a few times. Sometimes Valerie would let them know of recent escapees or criminals that had slipped through the system. They were her allies now and though they didn’t realize it, were helping her rid the streets of those that would abuse the system that was supposed to uphold the law.
When the event happened a being who claimed to be a god appeared before Valerie and asked what she wished for after explaining the new ‘rules’ of this altogether illogical game. However, the wish did interest her and she wished that her debts would be taken care of so she could focus on getting a job rather than hunting for some elusive prey. Though she didn’t especially enjoy being stuck in Georgia it would be alright as long as she could continue working.
Insignia Level 1
Valerie’s insignia is a small scale about the size of a quarter directly under her left eye. Most of the time her insignia remains hidden because Vera keeps an eye-patch over the eye to hide the scar and keep people from staring.
Blind Illusions - Level 1 – Valerie is able to figuratively bring her paintings to life by looking at her desired target(s) with her blind eye and brushing her insignia. The object or creature is then projected into her victim’s mind’s eye and are perceived to be real such as being trapped in a box or prison cell. Small things like rabbits, walls, or weapons are easy enough to draw out of the painting or drawing and require little concentration or energy. The larger the object is the more difficult it is to project. Depending on the size of the object, Valerie can maintain it for 2-5 posts but has to wait for 3-5 posts before she can attempt it again. The victim’s will is also taken into consideration in regards to whether or not they believe the illusion is real. If they believe a box or cage is real, they will be trapped but if the victim realizes that it is a projection and does not exist, then Valerie’s power will no longer have any effect on them. The side effects of the power include migraines, nausea, and can even render her unconscious if she taxes herself too much.
Passive – Hunter is Valerie’s Caracal familiar who like his name is an avid hunter and enjoys killing any and all birds he sees. Stalking is one of his favorite past times though he likes to act innocent if he should ever be caught. He doesn’t always listen to Valerie and is rather high spirited and treats everything like a game more often than not. Hunter loves attention and will yowl loudly to make sure he is the center of attention regardless of what’s going on. Valerie finds him annoying at best and lets him do as he pleases unless it interferes with her work.
