Someday \o/
History Ichabod was the third-born child to a man who would soon be a single father. His mother and father had very particular views on medication and childbirth, and his mother insisted on a homebirth with a midwife. She didn’t believe babies should be born in hospitals, nor did she believe that women should use medication to help them through the birth. She had successfully given birth to two other children in this manner, so neither she nor the midwife were especially concerned.
Quite unfortunately, they should have been. Due to a series of rather tragic complications and an excess of tearing and bleeding, Jessica would die in a nearby hospital before the doctors could save her. Ichabod was a perfectly healthy baby, though. He was adorable, the right size, no complications that the doctors could find. He already had a mop of green hair even at birth which was reminiscent of his father, thankfully. The man was already bitter and horribly depressed at losing his wife, so most of Ichabod’s care came from his older siblings. His sister was the oldest, already twelve by the time he was born. His brother was a bit younger, at six.
His sister seemed to be naturally maternal and despite being a young girl who had just lost her mother, she took the best care of him that she could. Their father was having a lot of trouble making ends meet, and eventually had to sell their home and land and move into the city for more job opportunities. The family of four would move into a three bedroom apartment, and for the first five years of his life young Ichabod would share a room with his sister since that made it easier on her to take care of him.
However, his sister was seventeen at this point and was practically dying for her own space. They put him in his brother’s room, which was more appropriate anyway. His brother was never particularly kind to him, but he wasn’t mean either. The boy simply seemed distant, and while Ichabod wanted to have a close relationship with him, his brother always refused to meet him halfway. At least by this point his father was taking more of an interest in him, having finally at least partially moved past the death of his wife. He didn’t seem to blame his young son for her death at all, and Ichabod learned a lot about how to fix things around the house from the man. Not only that, but his father taught him how to whittle and he seemed to have a natural talent for it.
Things seemed to calm down in his family thereafter. His sister got a job and helped his dad out with the bills, she graduated from high school, and she started attending community college. She was at home a lot less, which stressed not only him but his brother out as well. She had been a mother figure in both of their lives, and they weren’t quite ready to let her go. One good thing that came from this, though, was that the brothers did bond a bit. They were at home alone together more often than not, and while they seemed to be interested in different things, they would still sit in the room together when they did them.
His sister was twenty-two when she finally moved out. His elder brother had started work, and his father had gotten several hard-earned promotions. The three men would move out of the city into a two-bedroom house. This was probably one of the loneliest points in Ichabod’s life. His brother was old enough to drive and work, and his father still seemed to work a lot even though he didn’t have to as much anymore. He spent many nights at home alone, though it taught him the valuable lesson of how to be alone. He learned not to mind it, and actually grew to look forward to the house being empty.
Eventually his brother would get old enough to move out, and that would leave just Ichabod and his father in their house. By the time that Ichabod graduated high school he would begin to notice just how old his father seemed. The man was only sixty, but due to his hard life he seemed even older. Ichabod began to worry for him, and even though he had worked a part-time job since he was sixteen and he was applying for college, he decided to take on more hours so his father could take a bit of a break.
Toward the end of his freshmen year of college the boy would pass out from exhaustion on his way out the door to work. Thereafter his father told him he would either take less hours or quit entirely. He wasn’t willing to completely leech off of his father’s money, so he agreed to go back to part-time hours. His grades improved drastically, obviously, but he hardly knew what to do with his free-time.
When he was approached by the god and offered a wish he was pretty hesitant, though he managed something about his father not working so much. Thereafter his father would be promoted to more of an office position and Ichabod would be given his power and familiar.
Insignia Level 1 Empathy – Level One – Ichabod has the ability to know what the people around him are feeling when he has his power active. He cannot influence or manipulate anyone’s feelings at this level, he simply knows what they are feeling. If they’re sad, happy, angry, etc. The power can be extremely overwhelming for him, because he cannot control the amount of people whose emotions he reads. Anyone who is within a twenty foot radius of him is going to affect him, and he can barely stand to deal with one person who is having strong feelings – let alone however many are in the room with him. He tends to only activate his power in a controlled setting because he is pretty phobic of getting overwhelmed by everyone’s emotions. In a controlled setting, with one person, he can usually use his power for about 15 minutes if they aren’t experiencing any strong emotions. If they are, the time lessens to about 3-5 minutes. In a public setting he can’t even have it active for more than a minute, really.
His insignia takes the form of cherry blossom petals that seem to be floating down his left forearm. To activate his power, he needs to touch his fingers to two of the blossoms at once.
Sapphire – Passive – Ichabod’s passive takes the form of a sweet little Bluebird. Her feathers are roughly the same color as his eyes. She doesn’t follow him around all the time like some passives, but she tends to show up when he needs her. She can speak, in a sense. She can record certain snippets of TV shows, songs, or conversation and play them back to get her point across.
Extra - He is up to his eyeballs in debt from attending Barclay and it freaks him out quite a bit when he sits down to think about it.
- He still enjoys whittling and has plenty of little carvings that he's made throughout the years.
- He lives with his father in a small house on the edge of Sumner City.
- He doesn't tend to eat a lot of red meat because he feels bad for the animal it came from. His meat intake comes mostly from fish.
