History
Born into a branch of the wealthy Spade family whose money had been around for generations, Jack was the first and only child of Daniel and Ester Spade. Shortly after his birth, Ester divorced Daniel taking a portion of his incredible wealth and leaving him with a baby she didn’t want to see again. Heart broken and depressed, Daniel clung to the remains of his shattered relationship: specifically his baby son, Jack. Rather than start the dating game over again, Daniel attempted to raise the boy himself— with the help of hired hands, of course. Overall, he did well for a single first time father, to say the least. Most of Jack’s early memories were full of warmth and love from his father, and even the servants treated him with care and love. He was quite a spoiled child, given almost anything his heart readily desired aside from things that concerned putting him in harm’s way.
Jack was a child ahead of his age group in almost every way. He was shakily walking before he was crawling and running before anyone could grasp hold of him to stop. His first words were related to the financing he overheard his father speaking of in his office at home (as the man had started working at home since his son’s birth). He was taking care of himself early on even with servants to do such things, but despite all this growth, he was an unruly child. He loved getting into trouble whether it were in the form of climbing the cabinets or pranking the staff entrusted to take care of him. His father was always quick to defend him in the presence of the servants, but behind closed doors, Daniel scolded Jack on more than one occasion. The boy often burst into tears leaving his father awkward and uncertain of what to do, but he eventually adopted a ‘strict’ love policy that included resistance to backing down when tears were shed. Jack learned then he couldn’t always get his way with his father, to say the least. Despite this trend, Jack was always rather close with his father.
Jack would only be four when he was put in a special preschool in ‘preparation for elementary school’. There, he would interact with more peers than he had ever seen before, yet he fit well into school. He made a small pack of good friends, and he settled into learning and playing the day away. This continued through elementary school. He learned quite a bit and played quite a lot. Through his years, he grew progressively louder in order to be ‘heard’ amongst his peers, and sometimes even at home. He found it hard to discern an indoor voice from an outdoor one— but he certainly loved the outdoors a lot! There was so much to do outside, and he lamented when he could not play in the rain.
It was as he aged that Jack learned it was weird to not have a mother. His friends had them, and they sounded great. Why didn’t he have one? He asked his father one day, and the man about broke down before finally explaining what had happened. In an effort to console his father, Jack kept assuring him that all he need was him anyways. It was ok, everything was just fine the way it was! However, it wasn’t. As time went on, Jack couldn’t help feeling a void. He tended to seek the attention of girls and female teachers more, and when he couldn’t get it he acted out. Eventually his father ‘realized what was wrong’ and started dating again. The childish Jack was mortified to say the least and grew incredibly jealous— and very mean. He ‘protected’ his father from ‘many mean ladies’ for a number of years before his father finally decided it just wasn’t worth it. It was just the two of them, and it had always been that way.
The boy would be in fifth grade when “something happened within the family” as his father said, and suddenly everything was being sold. Jack was forced to part with many of his belongings, and they moved out of the large house they had lived in to a cramped apartment. There was no more hired help, no more rich foods, and certainly no more rich school to attend. He was put in public school with no friends. Jack had it rough trying to settle that year, and it didn’t help that no one, not even his father, would tell him exactly what happened. It would only be years later that he realized that with the death of his grandfather, most of the family business had gone under in one fell swoop. Suddenly everyone was struggling, and it sucked.
Jack struggled through that school year and the middle school years after. It was difficult to make friends when certain cliques were already established and rumors were on his back. His teachers didn’t take so much time to explain things, and for the first time in his life, he felt stupid in most of his classes. He evolved into the class clown, yet inside Jack was often suffering in one form or another. He hated feeling alone— and being alone when he would come home to an empty apartment because his father was working late again. He learned cooking through trial and error in order to have something prepared when his father finally made it in, and he did what he could to take care of the house. Ever still, there were a lot of emotions he couldn’t resolve.
He finally reached out to a school councilor his freshman year, but the hyped up belief that he was being neglected finally had child services at his and his father’s doorstep. A large amount of drama went down during this time with child services arguing his father was unfit to raise him while his father argued everything was suitable enough. Jack protested, siding with his father as well, but no one listened to him after he’d uttered the words to the councilor. Eventually things would quiet down, and Jack was allowed to stay with his father. However, he became extremely mistrusting of adults thereafter. All they wanted was to do harm- aside from his father, of course. The man was just trying to defend him, protect him.
He started getting in with the wrong groups of people as high school progressed. He learned quite a lot of things of ‘street life’ from them, everything from how to act and be tough to doing and selling drugs. Things escalated when a turf fight ensued, and he was expected to participate. Jack walked away cut up and shot in a shin and forearm. His father just about had a heart attack when his bloody son came through the door. He was rushed to the hospital and stitched up with his father scolding him all the way that it could have been worse, so much worse. What was he thinking getting into so much trouble? Did he not care for his own life? Back then, Jack didn’t know the answer. He was angry at his father for being there, for caring. They argued before his father finally broke down begging him not to do this to him, that he cared about him and didn’t want to come back to a hospital unsure if his son was even alive or not. Jack said he would stop.
He said he would stop. He said he would stop; he said he would stop. These things became his mantra in the next few years. Jack promised he would stop doing these things, and time and time again, he made the same mistakes. Even once he had graduated high school, even when he started college like his father wanted, he made mistakes. He kept swearing each and every time that this was the last one, but drugs and chaos ruled Jack’s life. He couldn’t change like he and his father desperately wanted. He was just going to do more harm, and eventually, Jack dropped out of college and cut ties with his father believing it would be better for the both of them if he just disappeared. He would never know how much he hurt the man that day.
He traveled all the way down the east coast trying to find a haven of sorts, a place he could nest in to and be forgotten . He went by ‘Black Jack’ with no surname and went deeper into underground crimes. He became a dealer himself, buying and selling more than just drugs. People wanted weapons— so supply and demand right? Right. He got his fixes on the way, and everyone was happy. Jack made a small fortune this way and invested it into more ‘respectable companies’ as a cover. For years it went on this way up until the event happened. When it occurred, he was approached by a god who offered him a power and a wish. He laughed and said he already had power though he wished for a box with the power to store anything in it.
He was beaned with what looked like a rubix cube. Ow. It was only after that he realized he could store surprisingly large items in it. That was pretty cool. Too bad the weight didn't seem to decrease exponentially with its size. It would only be later that he realized he had a power to go along with all the changes.
Insignia Level 1
Jack’s insignia appears as a barcode on the back of his neck. He merely has to touch it to activate its power.
Rapid Regeneration – level 1— Jack is capable of healing himself at an accelerated rate. Capable of restoring skin, muscles, tissue, and even bones in shortened durations of time, he is capable of regenerating even destroyed nerves if given enough time in which to do so. The severity of the issue and how much he wants to restore the damage is the factor in determining how much energy he must invest into healing and how much time it will take. At this level, he is capable of healing small scratches and bruises in a few minutes time while restoring broken bones takes up to thirty minutes. Regenerating damaged organs can take up to an hour and costs a lot of energy. At this level, he is not capable of completely regenerating limbs or full organs, and though he can heal, he can just as easily still die ifhis body gives out before he has finished restoring himself. After healing, he is prone to exhaustion, nausea, and illness brought on by cellular exhaustion.
His passive takes the form of his shadow when resting but can peal ‘himself’ off of whatever wall he is being projected on and can speak.
Extra
Unbeknownst to him, his mother went on to marry (and divorcing) quite a few other men and had quite a few children with them.
