“Heya wanna be my friend? “
History
The son of a prominent surgeon and a respected head nurse of a well-known hospital, Indiana was the fourth child of the main branch of the Indigo family. His eldest siblings, a pair of twins who could not possibly be more different from one another, were already in elementary school by the time of his birth while his elder sister, as the middle child, was closer to his age and had yet to start school. His early years are now vague at best but were relatively pleasant. He had very few wants that were not satisfied or at the very least addressed, and with a generally calm environment, he flourished. When Indi was four, the last sibling to grace the Indigo family, Illian, would be born.
As time went on, it became clear each child had a specialty of sorts. Ivan, the technical eldest by five minutes and the largest of the family, held both a problem solving mind and an impressive raw force he would use to enter the army right out of high school. Isaac, who was also rather intelligent but more creative, showed a deep connection with the fine arts and would become a respected artist in time. Iris, the most practical and organized of the siblings, showed strength in business affairs. Illian, the last to show prominent skills, would eventually show his own strength in his writing skill.
Indiana though? Indiana was a scientist. Of the family, he was the most similar to their father in a natural love of and tendency towards the sciences. However, what separated him from the old man was his lack of regard for social restraint and general disinterest in philosophies that regarded science as something ‘for the sake of others’. He read, studied, and forced himself to understand higher level concepts and information not because he aspired to be a doctor, not because he wanted to be a medical researcher, no. He wanted to be a pure scientist; one who studied science for its own sake. Nothing else mattered. This desire that warped his personality surprisingly early on had only questionable origins considering his family did not endorse or respect such notions, yet they were not so hard pressed to crush the dreams of an elementary schooler just yet.
Towards the end of elementary school, Indiana would meet Luana, the first person he ever considered an equal in understanding even in the face of their teachers. Both were incredibly intelligent and resourceful students and quickly became rivals in their studies and sometimes outside of them. Their arguments inside of and outside of class were often heated, and they broke hundreds of logical fallacies between the two of them. Despite this, behind closed doors and only to his elder sister Iris, Indi admitted he liked Luana a lot more than he let on. She was both frustrating and amazing, and he wanted to argue with her for a long time. Iris just laughed… a lot and assured Indi he probably would be able to.
Science fair after science fair, test after test, argument after argument, Indi and Luana walked through their middle school years and eventually both entered high school. However, in the middle of Indi’s freshman year of high school, Iris would be in a nasty car accident, and though EMTs managed to keep her alive until they could get her to the hospital, she died hours later regardless. Truthfully while not the first time Indi had been acquainted with death (as he had lost quite a few elderly pets growing up and his father sometimes told stories of the operating room over dinner) , losing Iris broke him in a way he didn’t think possible. His lack of belief in an afterlife ate at him just as badly as the guilt that he had been too busy that morning to sit down and talk with her one last time. Even with his family coming together to mourn, Indi felt ostracized, somehow different from them all. Iris had been closest to him, hadn’t she? Well, aside from her boyfriend who had been absolutely no good for her at all! Indi grew to loathe the man in time and held no tongue in his presence going so far as to blame him for her death.
The years after that, Indi grew obsessive with his sister’s death seeking someone or something to blame. He grew much more interested in mechanical engineering than he’d ever been before and studied relentlessly in physics. There had to have been some way that she could have survived, somehow. He wanted it to be true, and when he couldn’t find it in the physics, he went to the other sciences. There had to have been a way to save her; there just had to have been. During this time, he became so awkward around just about everyone. Even those who had known him for years couldn’t often understand what he was thinking or feeling at any given moment, and what they tried to say often irritated him. He made excellent grades but was known for ridiculing teachers. He maintained something of the rivalry with Luana but chastised her for lacking a passion for her studies. To say the least, Indi made quite a few enemies. That was fine with him, though. He just wanted out of the stupidity that was high school to move on to college where he could learn more.
He did just that. In two years under heavy course loads and with no summer vacations, Indi finished all the courses required to graduated, and before he had his driver’s license, the young man was accepted to MIT. There, he studied just as relentlessly as ever, but somewhere along the line, under the guidance of numerous professors, he slowly came to terms with his sister’s death. He calmed considerably and became more level headed in time, and eventually, one could even call him easy going. One year into his studies, Indi found a familiar irritated face had come to school with him. Luana was back with a vengeance, and the first time both saw each other again, she punched him straight over and demanded to know whether he had forgotten about her or not. Indi… laughed, and eventually Luana laughed. In the next few years, they dated on and off again.
Indi would graduate top of his engineering class and work thereafter in the research portion of the school where it just so happened he would find Luana as well. They had a rather rough patch in the next few years especially when their rivalries under different professors intensified. There was some new developments with computer implantations in the brain that both had to cooperate under, and as tensions and pressures from the higher ups weighed down upon them, they came together despite their differences and managed to succeed in making a decent prototypes with animals. The month after their graduation with PhDs, Indi asked Luana to marry him, and she slapped him twice before saying yes.
Their first few years together were stressful considering both chose different post-doc places and were rarely home even after both had decided to move to Georgia. They fought frequently from a clash of personalities on top of this, and quite a few times, divorce was thrown around. However, each and every time, Indi found himself clinging to Luana, and it stayed that way. Eventually, when things settled down a bit, they would have their one and only child, Luke. Being a new father was difficult for Indi, to say the least. Balancing work, time for Luana, and Luke, he struggled under immense pressures from all sides. However, by then, he had learned to laugh much of the stress off and go on. Ever still, people frequently mistook his persona for apathy, and his colleagues often scoffed at his ‘normalcy’ around them. His closest coworkers turned out to be his closest friends, and he liked having them over when he could.
To say the least, Indi didn’t agree with Luana when she decided to leave her own research to home school Luke. However, he did understand and respect her decision in time. He could see at least in part that Luke was doing better under such tutelage, and that was enough for Indi. When Luke started to act out, it put pressure on Luana and Indi. They argued more frequently, and it was hard to find a mid-ground when they did agree on certain things. Luana cried often, and Indi held her just as often. Their relationship mended with time, and they started going on dates more than before. It was just like old times again. He loved it; he loved her. What seemed only shortly after that, Luana found a lump on her chest and was diagnosed with stage three cancer.
It broke Indi to watch the woman he loved suffer so painfully. She went through everything: chemo, radiation, everything to try and stop the cancer. However, the malignant beast that had taken over her was vicious to say the least. Quickly resistant to every medication attempt to stop it, the cancer swallowed up Luana’s strength. Indi tried to stay strong, but as things became darker and darker, he became more and more lost. There was nothing he could do to save her, absolutely nothing. He cried often during that time but was always one to do so alone. He didn’t want Luana to see him cry nor did he want Luke to see him weak even when it seemed his son had an unnatural ability to crush him with questions regardless.
Six months and fourteen days after diagnosis, Luana passed away. While he told himself he was glad she was no longer suffering, Indi felt nothing but loss deep down. He stopped going in to work and withered in his bed or on the couch when he felt like it. To Indi, it was just like when Iris had died. He could do nothing back then too. He ignored every call, every text, every message from his family. He didn’t want condolences. He didn’t want to look at his brothers’ faces when Ivan had a living wife and several children, Isaac had a stable partner, and even Illian had a decent relationship now a days. Luana didn’t really have any family of her own, and thus Indi felt alone save for Luke whom had his own troubles. Thus, Indi suffered alone.
What possessed Indi to help Luke look into colleges, Indi himself didn’t know. However, he supposed it was because he was watching his son move on, and Indi felt the strange compulsion to do the same. It didn’t lessen the burden any, but moving again was a kick in the rear he needed. A while after that, he started work again and gained some of the weight back that he had lost. He argued on and off again with Luke, and when the boy was finally off at school, Indi spent more time in the lab working on his research and his projects. He had plenty of research assistance for such positions now, but it didn’t matter. He still enjoyed experimenting here and there. One day, however, a machine went out of control and sliced his right eye to pieces. He was rushed into surgery, but the eye was beyond repair. He had it removed and replaced with a glass one until he could find something more fitting.
It was but a few days later that he was approached by a god who extended not only condolences but offered to fix his eye. Indi laughed and assured ‘her’ that he would prefer a never ending supply of mint ice cream instead. What he was given was just that- and an insignia and power. In a round about way, his power gave him a new ‘sight’ that he believed to be better than any other anyways.
Insignia Level 1
Indi’s insignia is at his left temple and takes the form of a very tiny red arrow that is often mistaken for hair when one isn’t looking closely.
Technokinesis – level 1 – Indi’s power comes in sort of ‘sight’. He can sense and see the presence of electromagnetic waves that tie electronics together. By touching these waves (that look like long lines connecting objects), he can gain information about their sender and what is being sent and where. Things that are not encrypted heavily become plain text to him, and he can trace texts and some less encrypted emails in this way. Things that are more heavily encrypted are not altogether impossible to figure out but take longer to understand and comprehend. It would be like trying to understand a slightly different dialect rather than an altogether different language. The more encryption, the harder it is to understand. He can use this power up to five times a day for fifteen minute intervals. Repercussions include headaches and nausea.
The passive takes the form of various ‘tools’ such as wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, etc. It enjoys taking the form of whatever Indi needs at a particular moment and then flying away from him laughing that he can’t use it to do whatever work he needs done. Indi finds it just a little irritating.
Extra
He has knowledge of how many magic tricks work but still tends to call it ‘magic’ for the sake of the children who often see it.
He is still very much in love with his wife, and he would not readily consider another relationship with anyone.
