History
Makoto is the first born son of a pair of Japanese immigrants. His mother and father are deeply in love, and moved to America due to a job opportunity for his father. They were both around twenty-two when Makoto was born, and they couldn’t have been more overjoyed or loved him more. Both of them are very family oriented, and they had been looking forward to having their own family for a very long time. (Or what seemed like a long time to them). Makoto was really the perfect baby, he rarely ever cried and all he seemed to want when he did was a bit of attention. He was only a year old when his mother got pregnant with his sister, and barely two by the time she was born.
He seemed to be slightly jealous of her, but a bit of attention from his mother and father would quiet him easily enough. The new baby was much louder than he had ever been, and even more of a handful. As they aged their parents taught them the importance of family, taught Makoto it was his job to protect his younger sister as the eldest son. More often than not, though, it was her protecting him. She was loud, tough, and boisterous. Makoto was timid, quiet, and easily upset. The siblings got along well enough, though, and it was clear that they loved each other even when they fought.
Makoto was four when his last sibling, a brother, joined the family. He loved his new brother in the same way that he had always loved his sister, though they had to be gentle with him because he was sickly. As a child, he didn’t really notice how worried or strained his parents were. It wasn’t until they reprimanded his sister for being loud much more harshly than they normally did that he noticed things were amiss. His sister cried for hours while he tried to comfort her and tell her things would be okay – it was his job to make her feel better, after all. After that he tried to keep his sister in hand, though it was a hard task, he managed well enough.
By the time his brother was two, things seemed to settle down again. They were allowed to play with him more, though they still had to be careful and he couldn’t go outside for long. Makoto kept a very careful eye on him, wanting to keep him safe. His sister seemed to pick up on this, and the two siblings became overly protective of their youngest brother. This behavior seemed to please their parents, though, and was encouraged.
When Makoto was seven, the family took a trip to visit their relatives in Japan. He and his sister really enjoyed themselves there. While he was quiet at school, he opened up around his sister and brother. He loved to run and play, even if he was quiet while he did so. The family had a wonderful time in Japan and planned another visit in a couple years – not knowing that this visit would never be able to happen due to the event. Life passed normally for Makoto thereafter, right up until his youngest brother started school. Through a series of events that were never really explained, somehow the young boy got hurt. The injury wasn’t very severe, just a sprained wrist, but the family was furious.
It would be this injury that prompted Makoto’s wish and subsequently his power. Being a child, he wasn’t very confused by the approach of the god. He’d always had a vivid imagination, and accepted it easily. He wished to always be able to protect his younger siblings, even if he was physically weak and not very brave. His insignia appeared as a shield over his heart and he was given his power and familiar.
However, the morning after the event occurred, the kids would wake up to an empty house. Makoto had always been taught to knock on their parents’ door before entering, and not come in until they said he could, but no matter how much they knocked the door didn’t open. He attempted to keep up a sense of normalcy for his siblings that morning, helping them to dress and feeding them some cereal for breakfast. All the children attended school, but when they got back, their parents still weren’t there. Confused and upset, he eventually entered the room without permission. His parents weren't in there. Unsure of what to do, he called the police. The siblings were placed into an orphanage thereafter and their parents have yet to be found.
Insignia Level 1
The Defender – Level One – Give the fact that Makoto is a child and this is a first level power he doesn’t have the greatest control over it. That being said, as he ages, the power has the potential to become very useful. Simply put, Makoto’s power gives him the ability to generate force-fields around a particular person or object. The thing he is wanted to shield needs to be within ten feet of him, and the shield can be broken by enough force. The further the thing he’s trying to shield is away from him, the more energy the shield takes. He can only keep a shield up for around ten or fifteen minutes, and only once a day as well.
Irri – Passive – Makoto’s familiar takes the form of a red panda whom he has named Irri. Irri can speak when he chooses to, though mostly he simply shadows Makoto. He speaks up when he feels the boy is about to make a mistake, or when he feels he needs help.
Extra
- Makoto can speak both Japanese and English, though his Japanese isn't the best and he prefers English.
