Benjamin often comes off as a very rude and angry individual, someone who is vain and sure of himself and everything he does. This couldn’t be further from the truth in reality. He is always questioning himself and his actions, and he is nearly constantly in a state of stress and upset over it. He’s just gotten very good at hiding these things behind his fake personality. He claims that he doesn’t want or need help, but in reality all he really wants is someone to lean on. He likes very little about himself, and a few well-placed words can bring this to the surface in a violent burst of emotion – be it anger, anxiety, or tears.
History
Benjamin Isiah Stark is the second-born son to a pair of pretty regular parents. They were twenty-three when they got married, twenty-five when his elder brother was born, and thirty when he was born. Their house was of middling size, in an okay area. Not dangerous, but not extravagantly nice either. Both parents worked, but they also spent as much time at home with their sons as they could. Benjamin’s elder brother took the appropriate amount of interest in him, and he developed at the average pace for a child. Everything about his life was painfully average, but also safe and warm.
When he started school, he made friends just fine. He wasn’t super popular, nor was he ever picked on. His grades were average, though he did show an affinity for P.E. and sports early on – just like his brother. The two brothers were nearly identical and every way despite their age difference, except his elder brother was just slightly better at everything. This didn’t really bother him at a young age. He loved when he got to play with his big brother, and he really looked up to him. However, as time would pass, Benjamin would grow bitter toward him. Why couldn’t he be just a bit better? Why?
His growing bitterness at his brother became more and more apparent. He started shoving the older boy away, and lashing out when he offered help. He could see that he was he hurting his elder brother, but he couldn’t stop. He was just tired of living in the other redhead’s shadow. It wasn’t fair – it wasn’t right. Shouldn’t he at least be better at something? His father tried to assure him that it was simply the age gap. His brother had five years of practice on him in everything. Benjamin didn’t want to hear it. No matter how many times his parents tried to intervene, he continued to push his brother away.
He would come to regret this when his brother left for college. He found that he missed the older boy terribly, and fell into a bit of a depression. He wanted to apologize and mend their relationship, but his brother was thousands of miles away now, and distracted besides. Benjamin didn’t turn to his parents or peers, but rather turned to music. He started locking himself in his room and using the music to drown out his parents. His friends eventually stopped inviting him to do things, he never accepted the invitations anyway. When he started high school he continued with basketball, baseball, and soccer, though he never made friends with his teammates. He made himself an outcast, and told himself that was how he liked it.
Despite the distance and distractions, however, his brother did accept him whenever he reached out. They texted a lot, and while their relationship never went back to how it was before, they at least weren’t constantly fighting anymore. His attitude didn’t improve with the relationship, however. He was an emotional and hormonal teenager, and he really didn’t know how to handle himself or cope with anything. The stress from schoolwork and all of his sports started getting to him, and he started having panic attacks. He eventually had to be institutionalized for a while, and despite the insistence of his therapists that he shouldn’t quit all of his teams, he did anyway.
He wasted away in his room thereafter, sometimes refusing to leave for therapy and refusing to go to school more often than not. When his brother was home he’d get up for him, but he wasn’t home often and his texts and calls didn’t have quite the same amount of influence as his presence. Either way, Benjamin did at least manage to pass his classes. He would continue life in this way until he was around seventeen. His brother had finally graduated from college and had moved back home and his parents wanted to take them all out to dinner. Benjamin refused to leave the house even at his brother’s insistence.
In a way, perhaps, this was a blessing. On their way back home, they were hit by a drunk driver. His mother died on the scene and his father and brother were left in critical condition. If Benjamin couldn’t handle normal teenage life, he certainly couldn’t handle this. He fell apart quickly, though he had no one to turn to. He spent day and night in the hospital, and after several frightening weeks, it was declared that his father and brother would live. Neither had any real lasting physical injuries from the crash. Some scars, to be sure, but they had kept all their limbs and the use of them.
Things obviously didn’t return to normal when his father and brother returned home. Both of the boys took their red hair and features from their mother, and it was like their father couldn’t stand to look at them anymore. He was a changed man – cruel as he turned to alcohol to cope. He picked relentlessly at all of Benjamin’s insecurities, and seemed to blame him for the fact that his mother was dead. Benjamin fell into a horrible depression and started self-harming. He all but dropped out of school, and it became apparent to his brother that they could no long stay in the house. He took on extra hours at his job and was able to get them a small apartment. Being out of his father’s influence was good for Benjamin, though it took him a long time to come back around to himself. He had started blaming himself for his mother’s death as well, and no reassurance from his brother could change that.
He was nineteen when he finally got his GED. He started working at a local factory to help his brother out with the bills, but very quickly grew to hate it. He decided almost on a whim that he wanted to be a police officer. He passed the physical parts of the academy with ease, however he was hard pressed to pass the mental parts and the parts that involved actual paper tests. Bitter, he would eventually give up on it. Usually he would keep going if only to prove people wrong, but he didn’t see the point here. He knew he wanted to do something to help people, to keep them safe, but this clearly wasn’t the thing.
Somehow, eventually, he fell in with a group of Bounty Hunters. While he didn’t really agree with all of their methods, it seemed like the best way for him to get what he wanted. He could enforce his idea of justice, and they didn’t have any mental or paper examinations for him to pass. He had always been active and good with his hands, so he learned quickly from them. The extra cash he started bringing in was welcome, but his brother didn’t approve of his job. He didn’t want to see Benjamin get hurt. A bit of a rift in their relationship would form due to this, and they would start fighting.
When the event happened, he was approached by a god and given a wish. All he really wanted, though, was for him and his brother’s relationship to improve. It seemed like a silly wish, though after his insignia appeared and he was granted his power he did find that they were fighting less. His brother still expressed upset over his career choice, but didn’t hound him about it as much as he had.
Either way, when that woman marched herself into their office he was still feeling stressed and frayed. Things only went from bad to worse, and when he had his ass handed to him by her he was bitter and humiliated. He has never forgiven her, and it’s unlikely that he ever will. Maybe he was asking for it, though really he was just going along with what the older members were doing. He ignores her a lot more than the other members, and refuses to form any sort of bond with her. He wants nothing to do with her, and he’d be happier if she just went away.
Insignia Level 1
Cat-Like Reflexes – Level One – Benjamin’s power is very simple when you get down to it. His reflexes and agility are simply quite a bit better than the average person’s. Not so much that he has super speed, but enough to give him an edge in fights and chases. His movements are very graceful and fluid, and his power is pretty much always active. This takes a bit of a toll on him, causing him to have to eat a lot more than the average person and also causing him to sleep more as well. He’s often compared to a cat because he always lands on his feet.
His insignia actually looks like a scar going down his left side. Pink gashes run from his ribs to his hip, and he basically looks like he was clawed by some sort of big cat.
Aayla – Passive – His familiar takes the form of a lithe bobcat. She appears pretty lazy at first, with her head always in Benjamin’s lap whenever he’s sitting down. She naps even more than he does, and when she does decide to speak she’s snarky and vulgar. Benjamin doesn’t have the amount of control over her that he should, and she literally feeds off of his emotions. She will lash out at and attack people who are upsetting him – even if they don’t realize they are. She can and does keep up with him easily when he’s using his power.
Extra
- Benjamin nearly always has a pair of headphones in. He actually does keep his music turned down enough to hear everything that’s happening around him, however, he pretends like he doesn’t. So if he doesn’t want to talk to you, he simply stares off blankly like he can’t hear a word you’re saying.
- His nickname in the group is Obi Wan.
