History
Born as the only son of a Japanese emissary and an American diplomat, Shin was an unwanted product of ‘negotiations’ that both attempted to cover up considering both had families ‘back home’. The Japanese diplomat went home and attempted to convince herself and her husband that the baby that would form in the coming months was there while the American diplomat secretly paid her for ‘compensation’ through a Swiss bank account system. Mostly luckily for them both, Shin was born resembling his mother almost to a T – aside from his deep red eyes. Neither of his ‘parents’ nor his ‘grandparents’ had them, and in time it would be found out. There was argument for divorce before they finally managed to “make it work” to preserve the family name. The baby, Shin, would be raised in their household as theirs alone and would not be allowed to see his biological father. That was the deal.
Shin would grow up being raised this way knowing no parents aside from those who raised him. That being said, both his parents were frequently out of the house, and he was raised more by his mass of older sisters rather than either of them. One of his middle sisters in particular was mature enough to take care of most of her younger siblings Shin included, and in his early years, he adored her more than any other. She held nothing against any of her siblings for long and never once used Shin’s origins against him. He was her brother, and she was good with kids. That was it. For his first few years, Shin was happy like that and grew quickly because of her.
However, his sister would leave for college studies when Shin was but three years old, and his other eldest siblings were not near as nurturing or caring. His eldest ones didn’t want anything to do with him and were mostly out of the house anyways. His other siblings had a nasty habit of picking on him, and he cried often with very little comfort. As he aged, however, he’d learn to suck it up considering that was all he could do. He hid his tears, his fears, his general emotions, and the like behind a smile, and his all but non-existent parents assumed he was ‘fine’ that way. He did well enough in school to avoid being yelled at, and that was enough for them to ignore him completely.
Shin found an outlet in the internet as time went on. He spent much of his time on the computer on various forums and grew an unhealthy attachment to it as time went on. He wrote quite a bit learning English and Japanese very quickly because of it. He wrote his first few independent stories thereafter and even managed to get his earlier ones published in a children’s story magazine courtesy of his teacher’s help. His mother had enough sense to have him put the money he got from it into a savings account for him, and Shin appreciated it very much in time. By the age of ten, he had amassed quite a good amount of money in this way considering he didn’t receive any otherwise. He saved for either an apartment or college; he couldn’t decide which that early.
On and off he made and lost friends in school. In an effort to separate his home life from his school life, he did not take them home nor have extended stay after school. He did join a writing club in high school as well as the newspaper club, but he could submit all his work and the like over the computer and never once make a meeting. Meanwhile his siblings were graduating and tapering off from the family, and by the time he was fourteen, the last of them was out of the house. He was alone then with still absent parents and now absent siblings, but he’d come to like the silence and what he felt was peace. With them gone, he was free to grow out his hair, paint his nails, and sift through make up left behind. He liked dressing up as a woman and felt it was a minor testament to them though he’d never admit it.
As he grew in writing, Shin began to realize he needed more life experiences. It was difficult to truly describe love when he’d never been in it. It was difficult to describe scenes of intimacy without truly having experienced. For his own studies, he dated and did things during this time, much to the surprise to his peers who thought he was a shut in otherwise. Most assumed he was finally coming out of his shell. Some thought he was experimenting with his sexuality; few would realize he was just experimenting to write more.
At the end of high school, he would publish his first romance novel under a pen name, and it was more of a hit than anyone would have expected. Hundreds of thousands of paper back and online copies were sold, and Shin made a small fortune almost overnight. It was only during this time his parents actually took extended notice of him— up until they read the book and realized why it was such a hit. It was painfully explicit among other things, and he was ostracized and eventually all but thrown out of the family. With the money, he bought himself an apartment and started taking online classes as well as writing his second book. He’d publish another book the year after though it wasn’t as popular. He’d write another still, but his growing disinterest in romance made the book lame. He needed more muse.
At twenty-one, Shin was living off the money he’d made, still going to school with no major in sight, and disinterested in the world around him. He started going to bars and dancing, but these things were just something to do. He had scores of relationships, but they were short lived at best. He’d rather quickly become a hermit thereafter simply writing or playing online video games. However, one night when he exited a bar without a drink after a man had hit on him too much for his liking, Shin witnessed a murder. The way the blood sprayed in the night air, the sound of screams from the man who had been shot, and the expressions that he could see seared into Shin’s mind, and suddenly, muse struck. He ran only luckily escaping being hunted down for being a witness. He told no one what he saw but went home and wrote it out with exhilaration. This… this was the muse he had been looking for. The police never came to question him, perhaps because they couldn’t find the ‘mysterious woman who left the bar’ thereafter. In an effort to avoid being asked questions, he even went so far as to change his hair and persona for a while. However, in the next few months, he was submitting his new story to his editor, and soon enough he was publishing yet another best seller.
This would begin the kickoff of his murder novels. He wrote three quick novels and published quite a few short stories. However, just like before, his muse was slipping away from him, and his books were corroding. By the time he was twenty-four, Shin was bored again. He needed muse, he needed crime. He needed to see more crime. As time went on, Shin’s need for muse became desperation, and he went under the table, to a darker side of humanity, seeking to hire someone. In the months after, a mysterious serial killer had popped up, and more of Shin’s books popped up. He was wary, however, as time went on and he felt there was some suspicion towards him. He made plans to leave the country and sure enough left to America wherein he slipped in among various travelers.
Thereafter, he hired more, however, and wrote more in ‘peace’. However, when the toybox event occurred, Shin was approached by a god. His wish to ‘understand the human heart’ more than before was granted in the form of a power that was not quite empathy, and he relished it as he continued to ‘learn and write’.
Insignia Level 1
Shin’s insignia takes the form of red circle colorations at the edges of his eyes. While it may look like makeup on first glance, they more accurately resemble tattoos on closer glance. Shin must touch on or both of them to activate his power.
Aura Sensing – Level 1 – By activating his power, Shin is capable of seeing the auras of others. Aura is the expression of electromagnetic fields around bodies, and every living body expresses it differently depending on a variety of factors. In humans, aura expression is a reflection of multiple things, but the easiest to discern and understand is that the color of the aura is a reflection of a person’s mental and emotional state. Shin has yet to discern all of the meanings of even the color but has a basic understanding of what many of them equivocate to after six months of people observations. At the moment, Shin can only see aura when activating his power and staring directly at the person he is trying to use it on. However, he is capable of keeping this up for up to fifteen minutes if he so desired, and he is capable of reading the aura up to five times a day without recourse. Thereafter, strain often gives him a headache.
Shin’s familiar is a white fox with red eyes. She is smaller than one would expect for a full grown fox but is otherwise proportionate. She comes and goes as she pleases.
Extra
Shin’s bestselling books are his murder mystery novels including the Crimson Flowers series that follows around a detective and his younger murderous brother. However, he also writes romantic novels that are less well known.
