History
Riley Sophia Bates was born on a cold day in Seattle, Washington. Her father and mother were an unlikely pair – and unmarried. Her mother was a bit of a junkie, a thief, and she had definitely been around the block several times. Her father was a cop. By all rights, he should have arrested her mother and sent her to prison – but love and other things do strange things to people. He convinced himself he could help the woman, and she would be better for it. He was wrong. She never wanted to get pregnant, and she was basically only using him. When she found herself pregnant, she didn’t even consider stopping her drug use. Thankfully, Riley’s father sent her off to some kind rehab for the duration of her pregnancy so there was no way she could have access to the drugs. She hated him for it. As soon as Riley was born and she was released – she left. She didn’t even stay to look at the daughter who looked so much like her, nor did she have any part in naming the young girl.
Jason was left on his own with a squalling baby, and he knew nothing about babies. He reached out to his family for help, but they were all stuck up on the fact that Riley probably wasn’t even really his daughter. He felt sick at the thought of getting a paternity test, but it was the only way he could gain his family’s support. When the test came back positive, they begrudgingly agreed to babysit Riley while he was at work. The little girl never really knew love or warmth. No one, not even her father, was overly affectionate with her. Really, her father didn’t mean to be so distant. He loved his little girl and he always had, he just didn’t really know how to express this.
When Riley was around four, he decided that she needed a mother. Mary worked as a secretary at the police department, and she had always been dropping hints. He brought her into their lives rather quickly, but Riley had no interest in the woman. He was sure she would warm up to her soon enough, though, and the two were married not even six months later. She was pregnant within the next month, and Riley still didn’t want anything to do with her. She had been perfectly happy when it was only her and Daddy, she didn’t want this new woman and her new baby. She began to withdraw into herself, and when she started school, she turned to her peers for affection and attention.
When the new baby was born, Mary and her father were very distracted with him. This caused Riley to resent him quite a bit. He and Mary had no right! They just came in and destroyed everything. Everything had been so much better before them. Her father would hear none of it, though. He insisted she needed a mother, even if it was a mother she didn’t like. As the years passed, Riley was brutally cruel to her younger brother. She would break his toys, shove him down, and basically take any steps she could to make his life a living hell. This turned Mary against her completely, and caused fights between the woman and her father.
By the time the girl was entering high school, her father’s marriage was in shambles, her brother was terrified of her, and her step mother hated her. Mary tried everything to get back at Riley, but the truth of the matter was that Riley was simply more ruthless and much more willing to go there. The woman demanded that Riley be sent away – it was either that or she was leaving. The brunette fully expected to be shipped off to her grandparents’ house in Florida, but her father would surprise her on this one. He told Mary she could go, that she would never come before his daughter. Riley didn’t know how to handle her father’s sudden loyalty toward her, but she made sure to rub it in the older woman’s face as she was packing her bags.
Riley’s little brother was distraught. There was a custody battle that his mother won, so he only came to see them every other weekend. It had taken a while, but Riley finally got what she wanted. It was just her and her dad again. She found it wasn’t quite as great as she remembered, though. The house was soon in shambles, and he couldn’t really cook for anything. Not to mention that both of them had terrible tempers, and they were always fighting. Most of their fights revolved around the fact that Riley seemed to have a different boyfriend, or even girlfriend, for every day of the week. She wore lovers like accessories, and she almost seemed to have made a game of seeing who all she could date (and bed, though she kept that part from her father.)
Eventually Jason seemed to give up on her, and by the time she was sixteen she had full run of her life. She was allowed to do whatever she wanted, and she spent more and more time away from home. Her father spent more time with her younger brother, who absolutely and completely hated her at this point. She still picked on him whenever she got the chance, though deep down inside she knew that she loved the little piece of shit – as much as she hated it. She hated that word. Love. It was an awful thing, really. However, when she was around seventeen, her younger brother would get into an accident. After that, she attempted to turn their relationship around a bit. The thought of losing him had scared her more than she would ever admit.
At eighteen, Riley entered her senior year of high school. She had always been a popular girl despite the fact that she had basically slept with everyone in her class and she was rather bitchy. People seemed to like her anyway, for whatever reason. She made sure to look out for her younger brother since he was a freshmen, and their relationship improved slightly. When she graduated and it came time for her choose a college, she decided she wanted to move somewhere warmer. While she was quite terrified of moving across the country by herself, she wanted to get out of Seattle more than anything. Her father and even her brother were sad to see her go, but she felt like it was something she had to do.
She arrived in Georgia and started working on her associate’s degree. She quickly found that college was not exactly her cup of tea, and while she did eventually graduate with her associate’s in science, she knew she would never be going back. She got a job as a manager at a local restaurant and seems to be pretty happy there for the time being. Not to mention the money she makes on the side from the items she pick pockets.
When the event happened, she was approached by a god and offered a power and a wish. Her wish was that she wouldn’t get accidentally pregnant, which was one of her biggest fears. Her insignia appeared on the inside of her upper thigh, a rose vine. The rose on the end is in full bloom, but the thorns on the vine are wickedly sharp looking.
Insignia Level 1
The Pickpocket – Level One – Riley’s power manifests itself in something one could call super speed, though the speed is limited basically to her hands and arms. When she sets her mind on something to steal, her hand can grab it out of someone’s pocket faster than the human eye can see. If she does it right, the person won’t even really feel it. She can then casually pocket the item and move along with her life. However, if she times things wrong or doesn’t aim right, she’s basically just gonna punch the hell out of someone and also break her fingers. There is a certain rate of failure with the power as well. She can’t always manage to grab onto the item she’s wanting to take due to the fact that her hand is moving so fast. She can’t see it once it’s in motion either, nor can she really control the speed of it. It goes at a set speed, and she has to hope for the best.
Bandit – Passive – Her familiar takes the form of a little black fox with bright orange eyes. He’s very friendly, and basically loves being around anyone and everyone. He is highly intelligent, and Riley has trained him to steal things from people as well. He is always around her, and gets quite jealous of other people in her life. He’s been known to nip and bite at her lovers if she takes him along, which honestly he’ll follow her whether she wants him to or not. The only person who is really spared from his nips and bites is Jae at Riley’s insistence.
Extra
- She has a very good singing voice, though the only person she'll currently sing for is Jae.
