History
Elijah Nathaniel Savage was brought into the world alongside his brother via c-section, as twins tend to be. The two were rather small in comparison to other babies, but the doctor assured their mother that they were big enough as far as twins were concerned. The two boys were identical from birth, and their mother always dressed Elijah in blue colors, while Noah was dressed in purple. Their father didn’t seem to be in the picture, though whether they were the product of a one night stand, a failed relationship, or something else the boys would never know.
Obviously being the single mother of twins was not exactly the easiest thing in the world. Their mother struggled to make ends meet, though thankfully she did have some sort of secondary education, otherwise she never would have been able to afford it. She worked two jobs, and paid a young girl to look after them while she was at work. As far as Elijah can remember, the girl was a good enough caretaker, but then most people can’t remember their toddler years particularly well anyway.
The boys were never really exposed to other children, though, as their mother didn’t enroll them in preschool, nor did she have the money to pay to send them to an actual babysitter. Therefore they spent basically all of their time together, they were each other’s only friends. The babysitter that watched them was mostly ignored. She fed them, told them when to bathe, and when to go to sleep basically. Even though his mother was gone a lot, however, Elijah still loved her quite a bit. He was always doing things to get her attention when she was around, and was more than delighted to receive it. Even though she had to work a lot, it was clear that the woman loved her sons.
Their lives might have continued in this way. They might have enrolled in primary school, made friends, and led normal lives, but unfortunately that wasn’t what fate had in mind for them. They were around five when their babysitter came into their room one day. She was crying, which Elijah found to be exceedingly odd. The woman always had a smile on her face. She sat them down and told them their mother was dead, she had died in a car crash on her way to work. She explained this meant that their mother wouldn’t be coming home ever again. Elijah didn’t really understand, fully, though he can remember being scared. Rather than seeking comfort in their babysitter, he clung to his brother desperately, his biggest fear being that something might happen to separate them.
The boys were taken by solemn faced people to an orphanage, and it wasn’t so bad there. A little crowded, and the toys were broken more often than not, but the people who ran the place were kind and gentle. It would be living there for a few months that made Elijah truly realize that his mother was gone. She wasn’t going to come get them, ever. He slept in Noah’s bed every night, the bed that had been designated for him was never even touched. He developed a certain amount of separation anxiety, and usually refused to leave his brother’s side for any reason. Any time they were separated, he would more or less just break down until Noah re-entered the picture. Despite having once been a bright and amiable child, he made no friends in the orphanage. Any child who tried to befriend him was quickly shoved away – either physically or emotionally, it didn’t matter. Just like they didn’t.
They wouldn’t stay in the orphanage for a year before they were adopted. They were assured their new home would be pleasant and fun. Elijah didn’t really care, truth be told. He told himself it didn’t matter what the home was like as long as he had Noah. Well, in a way that was true. He needed his brother, anyone could see that, but the home they went to was hardly anything to be excited for. To the man who adopted them, they were merely checks – fatter checks because they were twins. Almost like a two for one deal. They were given a small room with one bed, which was fine, since they would only use one bed anyway – but it wasn’t like the man who adopted them knew that. No, he simply didn’t want to buy two beds.
Their foster father was drunk more often than not. The boys were never physically abused, no the abuse came mostly from neglect. The hunger hurt pretty badly at first until he got used to it. They lost weight, of course they did, but you couldn’t really see it through their baggy clothes. No one could tell them apart anymore, since they were dressed in the same mismatched and ill-fitting garb. Elijah never corrected people when they called him Noah, and really they were together all the time anyway, so it wasn’t like it mattered too much.
Life continued in this way for a very long time. Elijah learned to steal, scrounge, sew, and cook. Anything to keep them alive and fed. He learned how to turn a small amount of food into something that resembled a larger amount. He learned how to steal small things from stores, like thread and needles to fix their clothes, or like fruits and vegetables for them to eat. He learned how to take small amounts of the money that was rightfully theirs. If he did it just right, the man never noticed. The money was little enough, but it was better than nothing, really.
There was one thing that the boy never learned to do, however, and that was put a hamper on his emotions. If he was sad, he cried. In the rare moments when he was happy he smiled and laughed. When he was angry he screamed, hurt things, even broke things as long as they didn’t belong to him or his brother. His temper got him into trouble more than once. He would get spankings for getting up in his foster father’s face, for having the audacity to demand that some of the money was spent on food. And he never stopped, even though he knew what he was going to get for it.
He would often talk to Noah about running away. Anything, even living on the streets, would have to be better than continuing to live in that house. As always, though, his brother helped to curb his rash nature. If left up to Elijah, they would have just snuck out their window one night with whatever small amount of money or food they had on them. Noah’s plan was better, though. He had actually been thinking on it for a long time, and had things planned out. Elijah had known his brother was setting things up for them to leave, he just had to be patient. Of course, patience had never been one of his strong suits, but he trusted Noah to get them out of their situation, and so he waited. He ignored the hunger, and he waited.
They waited until their foster father was asleep one night, planning only to detain him so they could steal some money and whatever food was in the house. The fight turned ugly fast, however, the older man being much harder to detain than either of the boys had realized he would be. The only thing Elijah can really remember feeling was fear – but not for himself. What if something happened to Noah and he was left all alone? To this day, he has no idea how or when the whole thing turned into a bloodbath, but before he knew it his foster father was left in a bloody mess on the ground.
And then Noah collapsed, and more fear rushed through him. He was already shaking, but within seconds his legs were shaking too much to hold him up. He crawled over to his brother, his hands slipping around in the bloody mess they’d made. The tears that stained Noah’s cheeks were almost as scary as him having collapsed. The sob that escaped him upon seeing those tears seemed so loud in the now quiet house. He took a deep breath and ran his hands over his brother’s body, making sure that he wasn’t seriously injured anywhere. When he felt satisfied that Noah was mostly okay, he curled around him and just sobbed. He didn’t know what he was crying for. Shock, maybe. Maybe it was just seeing Noah cry.
Things were a bit of a blur after that as the boys put Noah’s plan into action. He can vaguely remember cooking something and eating until he was full for the first time in a very long time. Really, he knows just what it was, but he chooses not to dwell on it. They were hungry, they had to eat… they had to. After they had eaten, they took a shower, dying their hair from brown to the colors that they wear to this day. They packed up their meager possessions, and were able to exit the country easily due to Noah’s planning. They arrived in the United States barely a day after their foster father’s murder.
Life in the United States on their own was not easy, but the boys managed. They both got jobs as they finished up their last year of high school; hiding the fact that they were homeless. Neither of them wanted to enter the system again – and it wasn’t like that was really an option anyway. It was too dangerous. Elijah got a job at a restaurant, and the owner allowed him and Noah to eat there for free a lot after he won her over. Of course, the woman meant less than dirt to him, but her manipulation kept them fed. He managed to graduate high school with fairly good grades, considering, and now that they were eighteen they were also able to get a small apartment with the money they’d saved up.
It was after they got this apartment that Elijah’s borderline-obsessive cleaning behaviors began. Everything had to be kept clean and perfect. They would not ever live in a dirty house again, he would make sure of it. He had a cleaning routine he went through every day that involved a more thorough scrub of things than most houses ever got. He did this on top of work and college. A few times he even fell asleep cleaning, but he literally could not help it. He also resented any outside help, which seemed to be a sentiment that his brother shared. The boys learned to do just about everything by themselves, with Elijah picking up the tasks generally assumed to be for women and Noah picking up the others.
The boys also picked up another hobby outside of everything, a much more dangerous hobby, but an oddly satisfying one. They never targeted anyone who would be missed; even if there were people in Elijah’s every day life that he would have loved to hear scream. It would seem as though they had a taste for murder, and Noah had a taste for something else. Elijah was never as big on it, though he did eat it sometimes – when he cooked it, it tasted really good after all. Either way, even after the bluette stopped eating their kills, he never minded cooking them for Noah. Anything for Noah, after all.
After several years, the boys graduated from college – each with a teaching degree. Elijah’s degree centered on physical education and nutrition while Noah’s degree centered on science. They got a job at the same high school, which was a relief for Elijah, since he’d never quite gotten over his separation anxiety as far as his brother was concerned. He would regularly send the other male texts throughout the day, even if he spent breaks in Noah’s office and stood out in the hall with him when classes were switching.
Six months ago, he was approached by a god and offered a wish. He wished that he would never have to be without Noah – even though he was fully aware that this meant his life was tied to his brother’s. What was the point of living without him anyway? He was granted his healing power thereafter, and his insignia appeared on his back – basically looking like a tattoo of his skeletal structure. A quick check assured him that Noah had one exactly like his.
Insignia Level 1 The Sacrifice – Level One – Elijah’s power comes in the form of a healing ability that he finds to be rather useless, really, though the power goes directly along with his wish if you think about it. He’s perfectly capable of keeping Noah healthy and safe now, even if it comes at a price. A rather hefty one. Elijah can heal just about anything, from a laceration to the flu to a broken bone, however he basically has to sacrifice his own health to use his power. If he heals a laceration on someone, one half as deep will appear on him. If he cures someone of the flu, he’ll get a really bad cold at the least. If he heals a broken arm, his own arm will fracture or sprain. He also, obviously, cannot use the power on himself. The power can also easily kill him if he tries to heal too severe of a wound. Either way, the only person he’d ever really use the power on is Noah anyway.
Duo Capita – Passive – Elijah’s familiar is somewhat shared with his brother. It appears in the form of a two-headed boa constrictor that is about five feet long. Both of the heads can speak in that lispsy snaky voice, one sounding like an extremely effeminate man, the other having a more normal sounding voice for a man. The heads fight often, and the snake obviously has to stay with either Elijah or Noah on any given day while they are at work. The heads fight over that too, each having a favorite twin they would rather stay with. Elijah would rather them stay away, really.
Extra
- Elijah harbors and unhealthy attachment to his brother. Just like when he was a child, if he is separated from Noah for more than a few hours he becomes anxious and irritable. If he were to have to go for a couple of days without him, he would probably cease to function. Sending and receiving texts to and from his brother can help to lengthen the amount of time he can spend comfortably apart from him, though.
- Elijah likely suffers from some form of OCD, though he’s never been diagnosed. He has a rigorous cleaning routine that he must go through at least once a day (sometimes two or three if he’s feeling anxious). He and Noah’s house is spotless, but his hands are often cracked and sore from all the cleaning products they come into contact with.
