A lot of Christopher’s apparent personality is, in a sense, fake. His assertiveness has always been used to cover his insecurities. As a child, he found it easier to pick on other children than to get to know them and form bonds with them – because that was scary. The vast majority of his friends in his life would more accurately be referred to as ‘cohorts’. They were simply people who wanted the same thing that he did – power, drugs, money, etc., and were therefore bonded by that rather than anything emotional or deep. Most of the positive parts of his personality were created and pushed forward to make up for his blaring faults. He’s sympathetic, but at the same time tactless. He’s sorry he hurt your feelings, basically. He’s friendly to make up for the fact that he has a terrible temper and a love of fighting. He wants to do the right thing and be what people need, but he never can. His entire personality is at odds with itself, which tends to leave him feeling guilty, confused, and depressed more often than not.
He has never quite figured out how to express himself emotionally or cope, despite numerous therapists who have tried to teach him to do so. Any relationships that go deeper than friendship tend to be confusing and jarring for him – even though he’ll laugh it off, because he doesn’t want to admit to the fact that he has faults, at least not seriously. If he’s upset or confused enough he might jokingly bring it up, but he’ll dismiss it just as quickly if the person tries to take it and run with it. Mostly, he’s content to stumble in the dark. Well, perhaps not content, but he’s unwilling to reach out for help, so he makes the best of it. It is for these reasons that Christopher has so much trouble bridging the gap that has formed between himself and his siblings, and why he can’t seem to fix relationships (most of the time) once they’ve been fucked up – either by himself or someone else. He’s quick to apologize, but with very little meaning behind these apologies (especially to his family, who have seen him throw apologies around and then go back on them within hours) they typically do little good. He has no other means to express his guilt beyond a verbal apology, though, so it’s what he turns to.
History Christopher was the first-born son of a very affluent and influential couple who resided in the great city of Boston. His father’s family had owned a particular company responsible for the production of pharmaceuticals for a couple of generations, and had fallen into wealth quite easily. His mother’s family had been aristocrats for far longer, having been influential in America since its founding it would seem. No one can quite remember what made the family rich initially, but they owned several businesses and backed all the right stocks currently, which allowed them to keep up with their lifestyle.
Christopher Senior (as every first born son in the family had been named Christopher for as long as anyone could remember) was a very stoic man, though he did care for his wife and son. Juliette was a ditzy girl, always giggling about something, but the two seemed to get along well enough. And unlike some rich children, who were raised primarily by nannies, Christopher got plenty of attention from his mother and a surprising amount from his father. Juliette was assisted by the nannies, surely, but she was a very strong presence in her son’s life, and he got very attached to his mother early on.
Even as a child, however, Christopher was assertive and aggressive, prone to throwing fits and breaking things – even hurting other children. He was never quite properly punished for these things, with his mother coddling him and calling his father off every time the man tried to correct him. This caused Christopher to become a pretty huge bully, and this only worsened when he entered school. He was a natural leader, it would seem, because he quickly gathered a following of other rich and bored boys. They taunted and tormented the weaker children, but their parents always paid the school off to avoid their expulsion or any real sort of punishment.
Christopher and three of these boys would remain very close all through elementary school. When it became time for them to ship off to a boarding school for middle school, they demanded to attend the same one. Christopher’s father argued against it initially, saying it would be good for him to be separated from those boys, but Christopher got his way in the end – he always did. Smugly, he set off for a very expensive school.
However, Christopher and his little “gang” of hooligans wouldn’t be the only rich kids at this school. In fact, every child in attendance was filthy rich. For several months it seemed to become a competition between the parents of the bullies and the parents of the bullied to keep them in school. One by one, all of his Christopher’s friends were expelled from the school when their parents could no longer afford to keep them there. Christopher called his father and demanded to come home, but for once the man wasn’t having it, and refused to allow him to leave the school.
Things got slightly awkward after that. No one really wanted to be his friend, because they didn’t want to get in trouble (and because he was an asshole). For the first time in his life, he was completely alone, without even his siblings around to pick on. He began to focus on his studies, excelling in nearly all of his math and science classes. A particular math teacher would take an interest in him, and he would end up becoming very close with her. She helped explain to him about how he should treat people, and how he wasn’t actually better than anyone just because he had so much money (a thought perpetrated by his mother). Under her guidance, he seemed to mellow out a bit, and he finished middle school at that academy, managing to make some friends along the way.
When it came time for high school, he was able to choose any boarding school of his choosing once again. Rather than ship off so far away this time, however, he chose a boarding school in Boston – much to his parents’ delight. At first, things seemed to go very well, but then they took a nose dive. Without anyone around to influence him for the better anymore, he quickly fell in with a group of less than savory individuals. Most of them were older than him – juniors and seniors – but they welcomed him into their little group nonetheless.
Things started out slowly, as they tend to. A bit of pot, skipping a class or two. Eventually they began making fun of him for using his father’s name, so he started demanding to be referred to only as “Dmitri”, much to the distaste of his father. But he didn’t care what “that man” said anyway. It only took a year for things to spiral out of control, with him experimenting with heavier drugs. Eventually the boys began vandalizing things. Their parents were always there to pay off the store owners, the lawyers, the city itself, however, so the boys simply continued on their rampage.
This continued until he was eighteen, already covered with tattoos, and addicted pretty heavily to cocaine. He and his “friends” broke into a store, just because, but the owner was still there. Doped up out of their minds, or perhaps for other reasons, his friends began to beat the store owner mercilessly. Contrary to the what he generally projected to the world, and to the fact that he did enjoy a good fight, ganging up on an innocent person like that wasn’t exactly something he could stomach. However, when he tried to call them off, they wouldn’t listen. He ended up calling the cops who arrived – thankfully – before any irreparable damage was done to the man.
It took this to open his eyes, but when he returned home and asked for help, his father refused to even speak to him. His mother, soft as she always had been, agreed readily to help him. He was sent to a rehab, where he was able to kick his addiction, and then he enlisted in the marines. He didn’t want to take the chance to being back around that kind of thing again, he wanted to change and become a better person. Boot camp was hard, almost impossible, but he made it.
His father would fall terribly ill toward the end of all of his schooling and training, so instead of enlisting in active duty and shipping out, he went in the reserves. His father had forgiven him for all of his past wrongs, as parents tend to do, and the man spent his last weeks surrounded by his wife and children. The passing took its toll on Christopher (he started using the name again shortly before his father passed), and he turned to the only way he really knew how to cope, despite having worked so hard to kick the thing in the first place.
His mother, ditzy as she always was, was surprisingly perceptive. Rather than ship him off to another rehab, though, she packed the entire family up and moved down to one of her families old plantation homes in Georgia. She convinced Christopher to attend college, mostly for something to do, and paid private therapists and doctors to wean him off of the drug once again. He decided quite quickly that he wanted to go to school to become a Crime Scene Investigator. Not only did the job interest him, but he hoped being so close to the Law would help him to keep away from his addiction once and for all.
He majored in forensic anthropology, taking the required criminology and criminal justice classes as well. He was twenty when he started school, but having always been good in math and science, most of it came back to him easily – and he had plenty of money to get the best tutors when he needed them. Surprisingly he ended up developing a real passion for the field that he chose, and when he graduated, he was excited to start work.
Being from such an affluent family had always served him well in life, and it would continue to do so after he graduated. He easily got a job, and began work. The work was hard, and it took him quite some time to adjust to seeing all the brutality in the world – and to accept the fact that he could have easily been on the other side of it.
When the event happened, and he was approached by a god, he could barely believe it, and he could hardly think of what to wish for. Perhaps if he hadn’t been so shocked by it he would have wished for something deeper, but as it was, he was holding the camera he used on the scene in his hand, so he simply wished that the camera never broke or ran out of storage space. His wish was granted and he was given a power and an insignia. His insignia appeared in the form of a circular design on the back of his hand – it almost looks like it’s just another one of his tattoos.
Insignia Level 1 “The Blacklight” – Level One – This power is actually pretty simple, though extremely useful in Christopher’s line of work. He is basically able to see fingerprints/bodily fluid or anything that would normally need to be revealed using a black light. To activate his power, he simply needs to close his eyes and rub his fingers over his insignia, when he reopens his eyes he will be able to see what is normally hidden – obviously the lights need to be off for this to work. The power does take a toll on his eyes, however, and he can only use it for about fifteen minutes at a time, and no more than twice a day. If the lights are turned on while he has this power activated, he will become temporarily blind.
“The Blackcat” – Passive – His passive ability takes the form of a cat that can only be seen when he has his power activated. He can often feel “her” when he doesn’t have his power activated, however. She likes to wrap around his feet, sit in his lap, and generally be cuddly with him. She also leaves behind pawprints when she walks that he can see with his power activated.
Extra
- He always wears long sleeved shirts, no matter the weather, to cover up the track mark scars on his arms. He will typically refuse to go swimming with anyone other than family, and prefers other situations where he has to remove his shirt to be in the dark.
- He is apparently terrified of ghosts and other supernatural things.
- He loves raw fruit and vegetables, and tends to eat more of them than anything. Apples are his favorite, though.
- He is mildly phobic of going to the doctor and getting shots.
