There are many things one could say about Atticus Lewis even upon first meeting him, but to most, he is grotesquely open, wearing his disposition and emotions on his sleeve. Though he generally presents himself well initially, Atticus’s nature comes off as frank, dry, yet humorous in the minutes one spends talking to him. He has a natural inclination to ‘tell it like it is’ and is not hindered by testy or sensitive subjects often to the disdain of others around him. Many would consider him brutal in his honesty and harsh in his word choice and mannerisms, yet Atticus sees himself as a truthful being with a sense of understanding few have. Why sugar coat things? – is his question to the world. Yes to say Atticus rubs people the wrong way pretty easily is pretty obvious.
Old friends have referred to Atticus as the Snark Knight in the way in which he chooses to handle stressful situations with sarcasm and disinterest, yet he thinks himself the most funny thing to walk the face of the earth more often than not and wholeheartedly believes that if he had gone into comedy, he would have taken the world by storm. More often than not, his words are unnecessarily harsh, brutally honest, and generally what someone doesn’t want to hear. However, to say that he is a liar is far from the truth, at the very least of it all. He will tell you like it is no matter the case.
Despite this, if one perseveres and looks past his jagged mannerisms, one will find Atticus is a surprisingly caring individual- he just happens to be ridiculously selective of whom he cares for. Towards his brother and family, he is considerably more docile even if he doesn’t quite give up his ‘realistic’ mannerisms or his tendency to say things a certain way. He does care and does try and give advice here and there and help out where he can. The only problems with his advice happen to be that most of it comes from obscure or terrible experiences. As a teenager, he was not the model student or son- to put it lightly, and for this reason, he tends to give examples that aren’t… quite … normal. That being said, as far as helping out goes, that’s a bit easier. He’s very hands on and willing to attempt just about anything once. He’s naturally good at taking things apart- though less decent at actually putting them back together again, to say the least.
At his core, Atticus is someone that believes in himself completely never once doubting his abilities or his capacity to improve, and it is probably this that is both Atticus’s biggest strength and weakness. He is never crippled by fears and inhibitions, but he is also blunt as a baseball bat and someone that doesn’t readily understand other’s fears. He steps forwards with a sense of strength and self-worth that very few people naturally have, and not even the harsh words of others can readily get him down because he is just that damn confident. Some might consider this overconfidence, but Atticus certainly doesn’t see it that way.
That being said, though he doesn’t doubt any of his abilities or himself, Atticus has laid down surprising rules for himself. As a teenager, he was wild and reckless, but now as a budding adult, he has started to grasp a sense of purpose and doesn’t wish to readily let this go. He is someone that has the capacity to center nearly all of his existence around one goal, and that is what he has done. He wants to be the best medical examiner and will not diverge from this goal willingly. He is grossly interested in dead bodies and the information hidden within them— to the point that many of his jokes somehow backtrack to these points, often to people’s disdain.
History
The eldest of the Lewis siblings, Atticus was a vocal and rambunctious child straight from the womb practically running before he was crawling and screaming all the way. His early years were fast paced, and he quickly out paced most children's books in terms of development and mental characteristics. By nature, the boy was an adventurous child, one that could not readily leave things alone once they caught his eye, but to the credit of his work-from-home father, the young boy didn’t get into too much trouble at any given moment and to the credit of his big fluffy dog, he did sit still sometimes. At one point the dog had a rather well respected name, but after a three year old Atticus repeatedly argued his name was ‘Bu’ (eventually Blue) the poor animal was “renamed”. Atticus himself doesn't actually remember doing this, but early years in general are not something maintained by man.
Still a small child, Atticus would learn Mommy was having a baby, and though he was a little jealous as many children are, Atty was more excited initially than not- that was… until the baby actually got there. Babies cried so much and took so much attention from Daddy and Mommy that Atty was often a very frustrated child. While he was constantly reminded to love and be nice to his baby brother, Atticus was rarely all too nice – to say the least. As he grew older, Atty only became more mean towards the baby, Bastion as he would be named, much to their parents’ disdain. Very frequently, Atticus would find himself sitting in the corner pouting when he did or said something wrong or mean about the baby. It wasn’t fair though! That was what he claimed repeatedly over the subject, anyways.
(Somewhat) Luckily for everyone at home, Atticus would start school at the age of five and be home only in the afternoons from there on out. Rather quickly Atty would become the fearless leader of a group of small boys that were more than a troop of nightmares for their teachers. Almost weekly Atticus would end up in the principal’s office for one reason or another, and no amount of parent-teacher-student conferences were enough to curb Attcius’s behaviors. Whereas some boys would change their habits and actions in correspondence with rules one enough measures and punishments were in place, Atticus simply strove to not get caught as much— which only worked out so well at any given moment in time. Atticus would not ever know quite how much his actions pressured his parents' relationship, as they were good at keeping it behind closed doors, but somewhere in the background, tension persisted.
As time went on, friends came and went for Atticus. The year after, his initial tribe of hooligans began to be disbanded for numerous reasons, but when one former friend went so far as to call Atticus ‘Fatty Atty’ it was over with. That year and the years that followed, Atticus lost a considerable amount of his baby weight by becoming the school bully. More and more frequently he would end up in the school’s principal’s office, but ever still, there was little that could be done that Atticus didn’t somehow tolerate and preserver through. Some might actually have been impressed by his tolerance level and ingenuity through social measures- if it didn’t make him frustrating as hell to deal with.
Inevitably, Bastion would enter elementary school as well, and initially Atticus virtually ignored him during classes and continued to tease him when at home. However, the moment Atticus caught wind of someone bothering his little brother, something kicked inside of Atticus, and he made sure they’d never do it again. That was his little brother, and only he could mess with him! Expectedly enough, Atticus wound up in the principal’s office again— though at the very least Atticus had a decent reason for being there this time around (kinda, sorta). Unexpectedly, he would grow closer to Bastion as time went on after this though whether due to him finally maturing to a point he could tolerate attention sharing or if it was due solely to the situation, none could be sure.
As he entered middle school, however, Atticus’s antics proved fatal for his social life. He was still the crown prince of bullies and had a nasty habit of sticking his nose where it didn’t belong. This provoked retaliation and caused him to return fire frequently. Ironically, his 'bad boy' behavior seemed to attract a lot of girls, and his ego skyrocketed due to this. He got into hell’s ton of trouble, and when the police escorted him home one day, his parents knew they had to try something, do something more. Something. This couldn’t continue. Eventually, however, Atticus would surprisingly straighten out. To avoid being put through the court for various misdeeds, he got years of probation and community service wherein he would find himself in various places with various influential people. Slowly but surely, he began to mellow out under the guidance of many in is community, and through service, he got hands on experience in many fields. By the time he was in high school, his mindset had changed quite a bit, and rather than slink through his studies, he began to not only work harder but search for ideas on what to do for the future. Ironically around this time, he would receive a younger sister much to the family's surprise though Atticus would become just as protective of her as he was of Bastion in time.
On future matters, at first he wanted to be a doctor, as Atticus found he enjoyed taking care of certain types of people. However, he became aware rather quickly he wouldn’t be able to tolerate all types of people and still had a frack ton of berserker buttons that didn’t need to be pushed by the living. However, under the influence of a police officer, he met with a medical examiner and learned more about the practice. At the very least of it all, it was interesting, and thus he decided to at least major in some science if not that just yet. He had four years of college to figure out exact occupations or something, right? Something like that.
He’d apply to several colleges and eventually get in to a community college where he would take a considerable amount of his basics before transferring into a more established University. Despite an awkward transitional period, he did just as well in University as he did in community college (though he did have to work a bit harder than before especially in some of the upper level courses). From there, he would continue through the sciences and eventually graduate not only with a degree in biology but an internship with a medical examiner. While initially it was just to try out the work, Atticus found he liked it more and more and eventually decided to take more classes (inevitably going to medical school, ironically enough) and work on becoming a full medical examiner. Mostly due to the work load and drive of his studies, he dated less frequently during this initial time though it has picked up in recent years once more.
Things would get weird, however, when the event occurred. Atticus would find himself face to face with one of the strange ‘gods’, and a rather petty wish for his student loans to be cleared would transpired before he was given an insignia and a power to go along with it. To say he was confused was an understatement- though it only got worse when it seemed crime scenes were showing up without corpses. What the hell was going on?
Insignia Level 1
Psychometry - level 1 - In Atticus's left eye is a lighter purple insignia in the shape of a crescent moon with clear lines extending out from the center. By shutting this eye and pressing on his eyelid briefly before opening it, Atticus activates his power. Pscyhometry gives Atticus insight into the past experiences of an object at hand. By staring at it, he can get images of where it has been in any point in time. However, he can neither choose the time with which he sees it in nor does he instantly know where these images are from. It is the equivalent of seeing a bunch of photographs of the object in question in different areas and knowing that it was there at some point in time with no extra information given. As a side note, it doesn't work on living people. However, corpses or intimate objects are capable of being 'viewed' by this method. Atticus can only use this power a few times a day without being overloaded with images and mental burden.
Atticus's passive takes the form form of a ghostly child often seen following him around much to Atticus's confusion. The child rarely speaks though Atticus refers to him as 'Allen' from time to time.
Extra
He smokes cigars frequently, especially when frustrated. They calm his nerves.
He takes very good care of himself physically speaking (outside of smoking, anyways). He eats well and works out frequently.
While he may not appear initially as such, Atticus is a nerd. A lot of his pick up lines are frequently science related, and generally this is how he weeds out those he likes and doesn't like right off the bat.
Likes: comedy movies, cheery flavored things, sharp pointed objects, Michael Jackson music, suits, leather, sunglasses, truth or dare games, drinking games, strip poker, electric guitar, snakes and lizards
Dislikes: sour foods, bright colors, waking up early, mismatched socks, hats / hat hair, squeaky voice, being doubted, llamas, sugary coffee, soap operates (with the exception of General Hospital), being controlled
