“I’m someone you either hate or you tolerate, deal with it.”
History
Born into a wealthy southern family of assumptions and expectations, the child Julius Pierson would be cared for by seemingly everyone but his biological parents. Apparently too busy ruling Texas’s substantial oil regime from afar and ensuring their class and social order was never disputed, his parents were rarely home save for ceremonial events that were deemed worthy of their attention, and Julius would come to understand this far too early in life. Despite this, his butler and a few choice servants showed him favor above the call of duty and became the closest semblance of family structure he would ever actually have. He would even grow to befriend some of the servants’ children as his peers up until he was put in an all-boy’s boarding school at the age of five.
Despite not being the smartest in his class, Julius showed a natural hunger for information early on. He wanted to know everything there was to know about everything whether it be in the classic studies or in social interactions. However, towards many of his peers, he came off as pushy, hardheaded, and condescending especially on touchy matters, and very early on, he found himself without friends. Teachers often had mixed feelings towards him as well and had a habit of showing love of his intelligence but irritation towards his unrelenting accidental harshness. He was sent multiple times to the principal’s office for being ‘rude to a teacher’ or something similar, but whenever rebuke came, he would rebuke back with some startling accuracy and awareness. Early on, Julius found he could win such arguments by playing such petty cards.
Despite this, as he grew, Julius’s favorite stories were none other than the knight’s tales of chivalry and valor. He was an avid reader- not that he would tell anyone outright, and he could not help but imagine reenacting such interests in the form of military pursuits. Right before he was to attend middle school, he managed to convince his frequently absent parents to transfer him to a military school wherein he would gain an advantage when he finally turned eighteen. His desire was granted but at the cost of his romancing ideas. Military school was nothing like what he had expected and then some. Very often he was stressed out by not only the tests of physical skill but of mental and social ones. The mouth he had on him learned surprisingly quickly what he could and could not say. In this way, he developed from a brat into something just a bit more respectable.
Unknowingly, Julius’s parents probably did one of the best things they could for him in sending him to military school. With his personality smoothed over considerably, he began to keep and maintain likeminded friends and showed a surprisingly unknown humorous side. He won quite a few awards from the academy for various things before he graduated including a running competition where he proved not that he had the fastest time but the most ridiculous endurance. By the time he graduated, Julius had honors and was already accepted into the U.S. Navy. One of the first things Julius would learn upon stepping foot on a boat was that he was incredibly susceptible to sea sickness- who knew? It wasn’t as though his commander was going to let him use this as an excuse, and as weeks of training turned into months of sea fare and work, and eventually years of active service, Julius learned to tolerate it. Years of sea service would teach Julius many things in life, but it was when he was on leave that he would eventually meet Melody. She was the daughter of some wealthy ship manufacturer and knew boats almost better than he did. To say they had fun was a bit of a stretch considering they initially had rather polar opposite ideas of what was fun and what was not. However, as time went on, they got along well enough, and even some of his other crew started noting Julius’s clear desire to stay on land longer and longer. Eventually, he would be formally discharged and bow out from another session instead choosing to further his relationship with Melody and figure out what he wanted to do from there.
Melody would be the one to encourage Julius back into actual academia. While he had been through the navy school and various other training programs, he had not been to college whereas she was still in school. He ended up applying and being accepted into her college Barclay University wherein he would fumble around trying to figure out what he wanted to study for a year or two before finding he did well in science lab classes that required hand skills. During this time, however, he found more interest in the local police and police academy. Their structure was almost familiar to his time in the navy, and after talking with Melody, he dropped out of Barclay and entered the police academy. It was somewhat different from what he was used to, but he enjoyed it more than not. Melody was just happy he found something he enjoyed and was still close to home. When he graduated from the academy, he was given his first partner and started regular work. When Melody graduated two years later, they would get married.
In the next few years, Julius would continue through police ranks showing a general prowess brought on by years of military service and education. He and Melody would have their first daughter, Leia, during this time followed then by their second daughter Riley. However, the month after Riley was born, Julius’s partner would be killed in a street shooting. Initially, he refused to accept another partner, but as time went on, he’d eventually be assigned to Alastair. Initially Julius had to admit he didn’t like him- even if he couldn’t really find anything wrong with Alastair per say. However, as time went on, he grew to tolerate the man and eventually form a friendship with him at the end of it all.
When the event occurred, two things happened to Julius. He experienced a stark change in hair color and length when his supposed ‘wish’ for easier managed hair was granted, and he gained the power to detect when others were lying. Well, that was certainly useful- sort of.
Insignia Level 1
Located at Julius’s right temple is an intricate blue circle curled into itself. Very often it is hidden by his hair, and even when it’s not, the fact his hair is blue tends to obscure the fact it’s an actual marking. When he presses a finger to it, his power activates.
“Lie Detector” – level 1 – By activating his insignia, Julius is able to detect when someone is speaking the truth to the best of their ability or a lie. Akin to an actual lie detector, this power relies heavily on the internal reactions of a person such as elevated blood pressure and temperature to detect a lie, yet just as much, those that are convinced a lie is truth (thus making it their “truth”) are not detected as liars. Unlike other lie detectors, however, Julius’s sensitivity to associated lie physical reactions is unmatched. Generally the recourse of using this power depends on the duration that Julius keeps it active. He can go up to about five minutes of having the power active before it starts to put pressure on his mind and body often leading to headaches when left unchecked.
The passive comes in the form of a small mocking bird that has a habit of resting randomly on Julius’s head- much to his disdain. She tends to literally mock him more than help more often than not.
Extra
He’s a decent cook but prefers to eat out. His favorite food happens to be sea food, but he will pretty much eat anything handed to him.
He will go to unacceptable lengths to prove he can do something when challenged.
He is a burning caffeine addict and drinks his coffee black. He hates all the various 'fancy' coffees that are offered now a days because what he craves more than anything is the caffeine and everything else dilutes it.
His blood pressure drops exponentially when he is sleeping, and he tends to wake up with migraines because of this fact.
