History
Alena was born to a young couple when the doctors realized that the newborn girl was blind. Unable to support the child, the couple gave the baby up and was placed into foster care immediately thereafter. Though she was well taken care of, Alena would never know her family and with no reason to believe that her foster parents were not her real parents, took to calling them mama and papa. As Alena grew, it was clear she was drawn to music and other beautiful sounds as if to make up for her vision loss. Whenever she heard music play or birds sing, she would laugh and head towards the sound. This love of music was harnessed early as a means of helping her learn and to reward her for good behavior and accomplishing a difficult task.
Unfortunately, this happy life would not last; shortly Alena was outside playing in the snow when she heard an explosion and was knocked down by the force of the blast. The resulting fire quickly consumed the house and everything in it, leaving her all alone until someone came and took her away. She never saw mama or papa again, but was given a new home with new voices that she didn’t recognize where she was assured that she would be safe and happy.
After losing mama and papa, Alena didn’t speak for months and began to withdraw into herself, only speaking when spoken to and only then if prompted. Just when Alena was beginning to grow more comfortable around the family and started speaking again, her foster siblings started to tease her relentlessly over having to have everything ‘just so,’ as they put it. Alena simply couldn’t help it though, it was something she could control even if mama and papa weren’t around anymore to help explain it.
A few weeks later, Alena was walking to where she knew her foster mom’s car would be after school only to be stopped by a teacher. It turned out that her foster parents had been killed by a burglar and she was to be taken away by another family. Stunned, Alena simply nodded and did what she was told to do, all the while wishing she could just go back home…wherever ‘home’ was. It seemed that everywhere she went that something bad happened, and Alena wondered if she would ever find somewhere she could call home.
The third home was much like the first two, except there were children far older than her as well. One boy in particular seemed to like making things difficult for the new blind girl and constantly tripped her or went out of his way to make her look foolish and get the new girl in trouble. Alena had been with the family only a week this time when the foster mom was pushed down the stairs by her overly drunk husband. This time, Alena was the one who found the body when she fell into the still warm blood and screamed bloody murder when she realized what it was. Her foster siblings heard her and immediately called the ambulance where the foster children would be taken away and separated, some went to other foster families while Alena went to the orphanage.
In the orphanage, Alena didn’t so much as utter a sound but went about day to day life as best she could. The other kids left her alone for the most part, which was fine with her, she didn’t want to get close to anyone lest they get hurt as well. Having been to now three different homes where something horrible happened, Alena’s obsessive compulsive behavior grew worse, it was something she could control after all when everything else seemed to be falling to pieces around her. Not long after she arrived at the orphanage however, a couple came and took interest in her that she later learned were Adam and Irene Maksim and adopted her. Gradually, Alena grew to understand that this wasn’t another foster home, but her new family where they would all eventually move to Georgia.
Even after a few weeks, Alena still didn't speak though she was growing more accustomed to suddenly gaining siblings. She quickly learned that hard work was expected of her and did her best on her homework and studies. Alena quickly picked up on the violin and piano, and even tried her hand at making her own compositions in her free time. Over time, Alena began to open up a little more and started talking around her family more often. She did well in school and caught on to English rather quickly, having learned some of it when she was in Russia as well.
As she grew older, Alena continued to do well in her classes while her other older siblings graduated and got jobs. For once it seemed that nothing bad was going to happen to her or her family and Alena grew more attached to them as time passed. Now that she was certain that she was staying with this family for good, Alena was able to be herself and open up though she was still rather quiet and distant from her peers. Yes, she was more comfortable with her family but with those her own age she didn’t really grow close to with very few exceptions, those that strove to befriend her or shared her interest in music. Talking about music was one of the few subjects that Alena could talk for hours about since it was one of the few constants in her life.
When the event happened, Alena was approached by one of the gods and told that she could wish for anything she wanted. Instead of asking for sight, probably the more logical choice, Alena asked for a book that could record her compositions and play them back for her. The book is the size of a small journal that Alena has since never left home without that is filled with pages of what looks like ordinary sheet music. Unlike most books however, the journal never runs out of pages and is still compact enough to carry around. With the wish came a small orb that acts like a companion to Alena and ‘sings’ instead of talks. Donna, as Alena deems the orb, only listens to Alena and tends to troll everyone else with its ability to shape-shift into different objects and mimic or mock them. Regarding her power, Alena is still confused about how it works since she’s somehow supposed to find this insignia in order to use it but in time she’s certain to figure it out.
Insignia Level 1
Alena’s insignia is in the shape of a four-inch Treble Clef that could be easily mistaken for a tattoo due to its placement on her right shoulder.
Passive/Companion – Prima Donna, or Donna for short is Alena’s companion that is in the shape of a small sphere of light about the size of a tennis ball. She has the ability to shape-shift into whatever she pleases, though she still remains the same size. Her ‘voice’ sounds like a viola and though she can’t speak, she can get her point across with sounds that seem to mimic at least the tone of whatever she’s trying to get across. Donna only listens to Alena and acts as a guide and helper to her.
Musical Empathetic Projection- Level 1- When Alena touches her mark shortly before playing an instrument, she is able to project the emotions she is feeling or that the song conveys. Sad, slow songs can elicit tears while upbeat, happy ones may make the listener feel like they want to dance. The effect lasts only as long as the song is played (around 2-3 posts max) and is reliant on the audience’s will and whether they are listening to the song in question. Generally speaking, those that are able to control their emotions well already are able to handle the effects of the power better than others.
Extra
- Alena can speak both Russian and English fluently and still has a light Russian accent.
- She is able to pick up most instruments easily but her favorites to play are the violin and piano. Though she's never liked to boast about it, Alena has a fairly good singing voice though she's more apt to play instruments than sing.
